Pedicle morphology is important for intraoperative surgical anatomy and to define pedicle screw design and parameters. However, differences of pedicle size according to ethnicity and gender are not well studied. The purpose of this study is to investigate morphological characteristics of the pedicle in Japanese patients for determining adequate screw size and optimal surgical planning.

We investigated thoracic and lumbar pedicle morphology in Japanese patients using computed tomography (CT) measurements and analyzed the standard size of pedicles on upper thoracic to lumbar spine CT images in 227 Japanese patients.

Gender had a larger impact on the shape and size of pedicles than racial differences. In the distribution of pedicle width, we calculated the ratio of values less than 4.5mm, that in females resulted to be over 30% for the Th3-Th9 segment, and particularly high, above 60% at Th4 and Th5.

To assess the postoperative quality of life (QoL) of patients operated on for chronic otitis media (COM) and cholesteatoma by endoscopic approach, with respect to disease-specific complaints and psychological distress, using two validated questionnaires Chronic Ear Survey (CES) and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21).

Eighty-five consecutive patients operated on for cholesteatoma and COM by endoscopic tympanoplasty from March 2018 to February 2020 filled in CES and DASS-21, within one month prior to surgery. A second administration of each questionnaire was performed at the yearly postoperative evaluation. A multivariate analysis using a linear regression model was performed to evaluate the role of the different variables associated with the questionnaires' subscales and overall scores.

A significant improvement was achieved in all CES and DASS-21 subscales after endoscopic tympanoplasty. No patient showed a DASS-21 score compatible with a psychological distress both at the pre- and postoperative assessments. At multivariate analysis, the only significant factors associated with postoperative improvement in CES scores were preoperative DASS-21 "depression" score and months of follow-up.

We aimed to investigate the effect of interval length and total count of intratympanic steroid (ITS) injections in salvage treatment of patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL).

This retrospective case-control study included 64 patients with ISSNHL, who were treated with ITS injections as salvage therapy at a tertiary referral centre. From September 2019 to December 2020, 32 patients received up to four injections every 2-4days (revised-protocol group). These patients were 11 matched to patients, who received up to three injections at 1-week intervals between January 2014 and August 2019 (initial-protocol group). Hearing outcomes of the two groups were compared.

Both ITS salvage treatment protocols resulted in a statistically significant hearing improvement (p < 0.05). The initial-protocol declined hearing thresholds by 12 ± 11.7dB (p < 0.001, d = 1, P = 99%). Mean hearing function was improved by 13.4 ± 19.1dB in the revised-protocol group [p < 0.001, d = 0.7, P = 98%].
