Analyses of individual domains (combining near-and far-transfer outcomes) yielded significant transfer to executive-functioning, memory, and processing-speed in healthy older adults. After adjusting for publication bias, only the effect size for processing speed remained significant. Transfer to attention, objective everyday functioning, fluid-intelligence, and visuospatial domains was not significant. Thus, whilst "brain training" may be suitable for enjoyment and entertainment purposes, there is currently insufficient empirical evidence to support that such training can improve memory, general cognition, or everyday functioning. This area of research is still in its infancy and warrants further investigation to provide more substantial evidence regarding the efficacy of this rapidly expanding industry.It has been proposed that clays could have served as key factors in promoting the increase in complexity of organic matter in primitive terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments. The aim of this work is to study the adsorption-desorption of two dicarboxylic acids, fumaric and succinic acids, onto clay minerals (sodium and iron montmorillonite). These two acids may have played a role in prebiotic chemistry, and in extant biochemistry, they constitute an important redox couple (e.g. in Krebs cycle) in extant biochemistry. Smectite clays might have played a key role in the origins of life. The effect of pH on sorption has been tested; the analysis was performed by UV-vis and FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence. The results show that chemisorption is the main responsible of the adsorption processes among the dicarboxylic acids and clays. The role of the ion, present in the clay, is fundamental in the adsorption processes of dicarboxylic acids. These ions (sodium and iron) were selected due to their relevance on the geochemical environments that possibly existed into the primitive Earth. Different mechanisms are proposed to explain the sorption of dicarboxylic acids in the clay. In this work, we propose the formation of complexes among metal cations in the clays and dicarboxylic acids. The organic complexes were probably formed in the prebiotic environments enabling chemical processes, prior to the appearance of life. Thus, the data presented here are relevant to the origin of life studies.
The Nuclear Receptor Coactivator (NCOA3, also known as SRC-3, AIB1, p/CIP, RAC3, ACTR, and TRAM1), acts as an oncogene in multiple tumors, but its biological function in thyroid cancer remains unclear. This study was designed to explore the role of NCOA3 in thyroid cancer.
The study assessed NCOA3 expression in thyroid cancer and their matched non-cancerous thyroid tissues at mRNA and protein levels. Then we evaluated the effect of NCOA3 on malignant activities of thyroid cancer cells. To better understand the oncogenic role of NCOA3 in thyroid tumorigenesis, we tested the effect of NCOA3 on major proteins related to thyroid cancer.
Our data demonstrated that protein expression of NCOA3 was significantly upregulated in thyroid cancer tissues. NCOA3 knockdown inhibited cell proliferation and invasion, and induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in thyroid cancer. Conversely, ectopic expression of NCOA3 promoted cell proliferation and invasiveness in thyroid cancer. Mechanistically, NCOA3 could improve the survival and invasiveness of thyroid cancer cells through the modulation of the ErbB, AKT, ERK, and β-catenin pathways.
Collectively, these findings suggest that NCOA3 is critical in the initiation and development of thyroid cancer, and might be a possible marker for prognosis and therapy.

The Attitudes towards Severe Mental Illness (ASMI), the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and the Professional Quality of Life Scale-5 (ProQOL-5) were completed by 287 MHPs in Greece (25.4% males, 74.6% females). The results indicate that MHPs hold predominantly positive attitudes towards people with severe mental illness. Accurate prediction of wind speed is mandatory for precise estimation of wind power at a site. In this study, hybrid machine learning models have been deployed for short-term wind speed prediction. The twin support vector regression (TSVR), primal least squares twin support vector regression (PLSTSVR), iterative Lagrangian twin parametric insensitive support vector regression (ILTPISVR), extreme learning machine (ELM), random vector functional link (RVFL), and large-margin distribution machine-based regression (LDMR) models have been adopted in predicting the short-term wind speed collected from five stations named as Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, and Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, India. Further to check the applicability of the models, the performance of the models was compared based on various performance measures like RMSE, MAPE, SMAPE, MASE, SSE/SST, SSR/SST, and R2. The results suggest that LDMR outperforms other models in terms of its prediction accuracy and ELM is computationally faster compared to other models.
Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) was established by Fairbank in 1989 to assess functional disabilities in low back pain (LBP). It was last updated in 2019 as ODI version 2.1b (ODI AU_2.1b). ODI was first translated into Simplified Chinese Oswestry Disability Index (CODI) in 2008 by Lue. The construct validity, internal consistency, level of agreement and the floor and ceiling effects of CODI were found unclear by Yao in 2016. This study will verify how well the adapted Cantonese-Hong Kong Oswestry Disability Index version 2.1b (HKCODI) aligns with ODI AU_2.1b in the Southern Chinese population.
The translation of ODI AU_2.1b was performed according to guidelines from MAPI Research Trust and American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Psychometric properties of HKCODI were tested statistically by Pearson's correlation, Cronbach's Alpha and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC).
A total of 200 subjects (109 males, 91 females) aged from 15 to 85 (mean age = 58.91) with LBP scored from 3/10 to 10/10 in the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were recruited in the Occupational Therapy Department of a tertiary referral center.
