Accurate human body composition assessment is becoming very important in clinical practice due to the possibility of early diagnosis and preventive interventions of metabolic disorders. Fats are one of the most important elements in maintaining normal body structure and different methods are used to determine its total amount and distribution. The amount and distribution of abdominal white adipose tissue, and especially the visceral type, provides important parameters in the development assessment of central obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and other chronic non-infectious diseases.
The aim of the study was to determine the amount of visceral adipose tissue in adults who are overweight and then estimate the probability of developing insulin resistance (IR) in those with higher amounts of visceral adipose tissue. Based on a comparison of the amount of visceral adipose tissue and the frequency of IR, evaluate the clinical significance of a routine procedure for body structure assessment in relation to a normal amount of visceral adipose tissue, IR was registered in 10 subjects or 33%, which is a statistically significant difference.
Increased amount of visceral adipose tissue in overweight patients significantly affects the occurrence of IR. selleckchem For the patients with an increased amount of visceral adipose tissue, it is necessary to introduce intensive preventive measures to stop the development of diabetes and other complications as a result of IR presence.

Scoliosis could develop at the childhood age and progress beyond skeletal maturity. An early spinal fusion arrests growth of the spine and thorax, risking the development of secondary thoracic insufficiency syndrome. Vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib (VEPTR) is a fusionless technique aiming to correct the deformity with preservation of growth potential.
To show our experience and results regarding the use of VEPTR in children with scoliosis in regard to coronal profiles(length and deformity angle), spinal growth, and the complications we faced during the follow-up of two years after the index procedure.
A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data of a case series. Forty child with scoliosis of different etiologies. Their primary diagnoses were neuromuscular scoliosis in 13, Juvenile idiopathic scoliosis in12, Congenital Scoliosis in 8, syndromatic patients 5 and 2 with Arthrogryposis. All 40 patients received percutaneous rib-to-pelvis or rib to vertebra or rib to rib VEPTR implanlantation of VEPTR of2.8 cm (1.2-5.1cm) which is 10.9%, and the average coronal length gain at 2 years follow up was 5.7 cm (3.7-9.8cm) that is 22.2%. Complication occurred in 18 of our patients (45%).
Early results of VEPTR for childhood scoliosis are encouraging. Follow-up till skeletal maturity will best determine future indications.

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in hypertensive patients indicates an ongoing disease process involving the heart. Different electrocardiography (ECG) criteria were investigated; however, the results were conflicting.
To evaluate different ECG criteria in diagnosis of LVH in hypertensive patients using echocardiography as a gold standard.
A hospital based cross sectional observational study which included 140 adult patients with a history of hypertension. Patients were assessed for LVH using five ECG criteria Romhilt-Estes, SokoloweLyon, Cornell voltage, Gubnere Ungerleider and Peguero-Lo Presti. Echocardiography was used to determine the left ventricular mass index for the patients. The sensitivity and specificity of each ECG criterion was determined considering echocardiography as a gold standard.
According to the echocardiographic results, 83 patients (59.29%) were found to have LVH. Age over 40 years, overweight and obesity, high systolic blood pressure (>170 mmHg) and using of antihypertensive drugs were significantly associated with the increased risk of LVH. All included ECG criteria showed low sensitivity and high specificity in detection of LVH in hypertensive patients. There were no significant differences in the efficiency of different ECG criteria in discrimination between mild, moderate and severe cases of LVH.
LVH is very common among hypertensive patients, and the sensitivity of ECG criteria is low for these criteria to be clinically used for detection of LVH with high specificity, in which Cornell criterion is the best in detection.

Diabetes mellitus is a common disease worldwide. It is considered as the third leading cause of death, in the developed countries followed by heart diseases and cancer.
The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the aqueous fraction of R. mucronata and A. marina leaves grown in Saudi Arabia alone or in combination as antidiabetic agents and explore its effect on the antioxidants status.
One hundred and twenty male Wistar albino rats were divided into 8 groups were utilized in this study. Streptozotocin (STZ) was utilized for induction of diabetes. The effects of daily oral administration of aqueous extract from the leaves of R. mucronata (400 mg/kg BW), A. marina (400 mg/kg BW) and the combination of both plant extracts for 6 weeks were evaluated on blood glucose, insulin, tissues' antioxidants as well as pancreatic immunohistochemistry in normal, (STZ)-induced diabetic rats.
Oral administration of the plants extracts significantly reduced (p ≤ 0.001) serum glucose, insulin and improved the antioxidants status in the liver compared to the untreated rats.
