Hip fractures are associated with significant morbidity and mortality in smokers with lung disease, but whether lung-specific factors are associated with fracture risk is unknown. Our goal was to determine whether lung-specific factors associate with incident hip fracture and improve risk discrimination of traditional fracture risk models in smokers. The analysis consisted of a convenience sample of 9187 current and former smokers (58,477 participant follow-up years) participating in the Genetic Epidemiology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) longitudinal observational cohort study. Participants were enrolled between 2008 and 2011 with follow-up data collection through July 2018. Traditional risk factors associated with incident hip fracture (n = 361) included age, female sex, osteoporosis, prevalent spine and hip fracture, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes. Lung-specific risk factors included post-bronchodilator percent forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1 %) predicted (OR, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.92-.0003-0.002], 0.001 [95% CI, 0.0001-0.002], and 0.008 [95% CI, 0.003-0.013], corresponding to relative IDIs of 12.8%, 6.3%, and 34.6%, respectively). These findings suggest that the incorporation of lung-specific risk factors into fracture risk assessment tools may more accurately predict fracture risk in smokers. © 2020 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.Neuronal plasticity describes changes in structure, function, and connections of neurons. The hippocampus, in particular, has been shown to exhibit considerable plasticity regarding both physiological and morphological functions. Ipilimumab ic50 Melatonin, a hormone released by the pineal gland, promotes cell survival and dendrite maturation of neurons in the newborn brain and protects against neurological disorders. In this study, we investigated the effect of exogenous melatonin on neuronal architecture and its possible mechanism in the hippocampus of adult male C57BL/6 mice. Melatonin treatment significantly increased the total length and complexity of dendrites in the apical and basal cornu ammonis (CA) 1 and in the dentate gyrus in mouse hippocampi. Spine density in CA1 apical dendrites was increased, but no significant differences in other subregions were observed. In primary cultured hippocampal neurons, the length and arborization of neurites were significantly augmented by melatonin treatment. Additionally, western blot and immunohistochemical analyses in both in vivo and in vitro systems revealed significant increases in the level of cysteine-rich protein 1 (crp-1) protein, which is known to be involved in dendritic branching in mouse hippocampal neurons after melatonin treatment. Our results suggest that exogenous melatonin leads to significant alterations of neuronal micromorphometry in the adult hippocampus, possibly via crp-1 signaling.

The aim was to determine whether there are relationships among transformational leadership, safe team climate, knowledge sharing and reflection, and team performance in nursing and social work teams.

Based on organisational learning theory, we hypothesized that transformational leadership could create a safe team climate that fosters knowledge sharing and reflection in teams and thus influences the performance of teams.

We conducted a cross-sectional study using questionnaires and validated scales to measure transformational leadership, safe team climate, knowledge sharing and reflection, and performance. The sample consisted of 32 teams (N=32 teams, n=183 team members).

We conducted structural equation modelling. The results indicate that reflection positively relates with team performance, transformational leadership has a direct positive relationship with safe team climate, and safe team climate has positive relationships with knowledge sharing and reflection.

Our findings regarding transformational leadership's positive influence on teams in nursing and social work fill an important gap in the literature. The study's limitations are the use of self-reports and a small sample size.

Our results indicate that transformational leadership can foster a safe climate in work teams and hereby team learning and performance.

Diabetes increases the risk of infections and coronary heart disease (CHD). Whether infections increase the risk of CHD and how this applies to individuals with diabetes is unclear.

To investigate the association between bacterial infections and the risk of CHD in type 1 diabetes.

Individuals with type 1 diabetes (n=3781) were recruited from the Finnish Diabetic Nephropathy Study (FinnDiane), a prospective follow-up study. CHD was defined as incident events fatal or nonfatal myocardial infarction, coronary artery bypass surgery or percutaneous coronary intervention, identified through national hospital discharge register data. Infections were identified through national register data on all antibiotic purchases from outpatient care. Register data were available from 1 January 1995 to 31 December 2015. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) activity was measured from serum samples at baseline. Data on traditional risk factors for CHD were collected during baseline and consecutive visits.

Individuals with an incident CHD event (n=370) had a higher mean number of antibiotic purchases per follow-up year compared to those without incident CHD (1.
