Survival in the HBOT group (57.1%) was significantly higher than that in the controls (12.5%,

HBOT showed a beneficial effect on acute liver injury and rat survival by enhancing the Akt signaling pathway and decreasing apoptosis.In this work, the comprehensive metabolomic changes in pork burgers treated with different antioxidants, namely, (a) a control without antioxidants, (b) 200 mg/kg butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and (c) 250 mg/kg pitanga leaf extract (PLE, from Eugenia uniflora L.), each one packaged under modified atmosphere (80% O2 and 20% CO2) for 18 days storage at 2 ± 1 °C, were deeply studied. check details In particular, untargeted metabolomics was used to evaluate the impact of the antioxidant extracts on meat quality. The PLE phytochemical profile revealed a wide variety of antioxidant compounds, such as polyphenols, alkaloids, and terpenoids. Multivariate statistics (both unsupervised and supervised) allowed to observe marked differences in BHT and PLE burgers metabolomic profiles during storage. Most of the differences could be attributed to hexanoylcarnitine, 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal, 6-hydroxypentadecanedioic acid, 9S,11S,15S,20-tetrahydroxy-5Z,13E-prostadienoic acid (20-hydroxy-PGF2a), sativic acid, followed by glycerophospholipids. In addition, significant correlations (p less then 0.01) were observed between thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and metabolites related to lipid oxidation processes. Therefore, the approach used showed a clear modulation of lipid oxidation, likely promoted by the plant leaf extract, thus confirming the ability of PLE to delay lipid oxidative phenomena during storage.Mechanical properties and microstructure are investigated for a martensitic stainless steel (AISI 420) fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) in three build directions. The tensile specimens built by SLM are classified into three groups. Group A is horizontally built in the thickness direction, Group B is horizontally built in the width direction, and Group C is vertically built in the length direction. The loading direction in tensile test is parallel to the build direction of Group C, but perpendicular to that of Groups A and B. Experimental results indicate build direction has significant effects on the residual stress, hardness, and tensile properties of SLM builds. Microstructural analyses indicate the as-fabricated SLM AISI 420 builds exhibit elongated cells and acicular structures which are composed of martensite and retained austenite phases growing along the build direction. Such anisotropy in the microstructure leads to anisotropic mechanical properties as Group C specimens (length direction) exhibit greater yield stress, ultimate tensile stress, and elongation than the specimens of Groups A (thickness direction) and B (width direction). The residual compressive stress in the gauge section also contributes to the superior tensile properties of Group C (length direction), as compared to Groups A (thickness direction) and B (width direction), which exhibit residual tensile stress in the gauge section.Autophagy is a cellular mechanism that protects cells from stress by digesting non-functional cellular components. In the cartilage, chondrocytes depend on autophagy as a principal mechanism to maintain cellular homeostasis. This protective role diminishes prior to the structural damage that normally occurs during aging. Considering that aging is the main risk factor for osteoarthritis, evaluating the expression of genes associated with autophagy in senescent cartilage might allow for the identification of potential therapeutic targets for treatment. Thus, we studied two groups of young and senescent rats. A histological analysis of cartilage and gene expression quantification for autophagy-related genes were performed. In aged cartilage, morphological changes were observed, such as an increase in cartilage degeneration as measured by the modified Mankin score, a decrease in the number of chondrocytes and collagen II (Col2a1), and an increase in matrix metalloproteinase 13 (Mmp13). Moreover, 84 genes associated with autophagy were evaluated by a PCR array analysis, and 15 of them were found to be significantly decreased with aging. Furthermore, an in silico analysis based on by two different bioinformatics software tools revealed that several processes including cellular homeostasis, autophagosome assembly, and aging-as well as several biological pathways such as autophagy, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) signaling, PI3K (phosphoinositide 3-kinase)/AKT (serine/threonine kinase) signaling, and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling-were enriched. In conclusion, the analysis identified some potential targets for osteoarthritis treatment that would allow for the development of new therapeutic strategies for this chronic disease.This study aimed to evaluate the fatty acid composition, including the contents, of conjugated linoleic acid cis9trans11 C182 (CLA) and trans C181 and C182 isomers in hard cow, sheep, and goat cheeses found on the Polish market and to compare lipid quality indices in these cheeses. The gas chromatography method was used to determine the fatty acid profile. The study demonstrated various contents of cis9trans 11 C182 (CLA), trans C181, and C182 isomers and the values of lipid quality indices in the cheeses. Sheep and goat cheeses were richer sources of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) (14.73 ± 2.55% and 14.80 ± 2.80%, respectively) than the cow cheeses (9.38 ± 0.87%). The cow cheeses had a significantly higher (p less then 0.05) content of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), the lowest n-6/n-3 ratio, and the highest content of fatty acids, inducing a desirable dietary effect in humans (DFA) compared to the sheep and goat cheeses. Significantly higher (p less then 0.05) contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were found in sheep cheeses.
