Using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) to compare the retinal micro vessel alteration between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) children and normal subjects.
One hundred-thirty-two eyes (132 participants) were recruited in this study. The average age of OSA group (66 eyes) and healthy control group (66 eyes) were 6.23±1.73 and 6.76±1.89years, respectively. The retinal vascular network density indices and the fovea avascular zone (FAZ) size were analyzed by OCT-A.

We have evaluated the potential radioprotective, antioxidant and anti-apoptotic effects of resveratrol (RSV) against high-dose radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy associated damage of the lacrimal glands by biochemical, histopathological and immunohistochemical methods.
Thirty Wistar-albino rats were randomly divided into three groups; the control group received no treatment or medication, the RAI group received RAI but no medication and the RSV group received oral RAI and intraperitoneal RSV. RSV was started at day one, before RAI administration, and continued for 8 days. Bilateral intraorbital (IG), extraorbital (EG), and Harderian (HG) lacrimal glands were evaluated in all rats for histopathological, immunohistochemical, tissue cytokine and oxidant and antioxidant level assessment.
RSV group restored inflammation, fibrosis, vacuolization, change in nucleus characteristics, lipofuscin-like accumulation and cellular morphologic patterns were statistically significant in all lacrimal gland types, compared has protected the histopathological pattern of the lacrimal glands from the damage, decreased inflammation in histopathologic assessments, and decreased tissue cytokine levels, apoptosis and DNA fragmentation on the lacrimal glands after RAI.The mechanism of aluminum toxicity was studied in the model cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Cell growth of yeast was inhibited by aluminum. The spot assay showed that the mechanism of aluminum detoxification in yeast cells was different from that of heavy metal cadmium. After treatment with aluminum, intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species, protein carbonyl, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were dramatically increased. Meanwhile, the percentage of aluminum-treated cells permeable to propidium iodide was augmented significantly. These data demonstrated that aluminum toxicity was attributed to oxidative stress in yeast, and it induced oxidative damage by causing lipid peroxidation, injuring cell membrane integrity. Moreover, aluminum triggered the antioxidant defense system in the cells. Glutathione levels were found to be decreased, while activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase were increased after treatment with aluminum. Additionally, an oxidative-stress-related mutation sensitivity assay showed that aluminum-induced yeast oxidative stress was closely related to glutathione. These data demonstrated that the oxidative damage caused by aluminum was different from that of hydrogen peroxide, in yeast. Aluminum could cause DNA damage, and aluminum toxicity was associated with sulfhydryl groups, such as glutathione, while it was independent of YAP1.Aberrant epithelial-mesenchymal interactions have critical roles in regulating fibrosis development. The involvement of extracellular vesicles (EVs), including exosomes, remains to be elucidated in the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Here, we found that lung fibroblasts (LFs) from patients with IPF induce cellular senescence via EV-mediated transfer of pathogenic cargo to lung epithelial cells. Mechanistically, IPF LF-derived EVs increased mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and associated mitochondrial damage in lung epithelial cells, leading to activation of the DNA damage response and subsequent epithelial-cell senescence. We showed that IPF LF-derived EVs contain elevated levels of microRNA-23b-3p (miR-23b-3p) and miR-494-3p, which suppress SIRT3, resulting in the epithelial EV-induced phenotypic changes. Furthermore, the levels of miR-23b-3p and miR-494-3p found in IPF LF-derived EVs correlated positively with IPF disease severity. These findings reveal that the accelerated epithelial-cell mitochondrial damage and senescence observed during IPF pathogenesis are caused by a novel paracrine effect of IPF fibroblasts via microRNA-containing EVs.

We hypothesized a lower risk of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) in adults with prior thumb sucking and nail biting.
918 IBD cases and their 918 siblings without IBD were asked to fill out a survey containing 32 questions on environmental factors in childhood and early adulthood. Prevalence of thumb sucking and/or nail biting at the usually well-remembered time of (1) school enrollment and (2) coming-of-age ceremonies was the predefined combined risk factor of this study.
