05, corrected). These pRF-shifts were largest for the 4° condition [visual area (mean eccentricity shift) V1 (0.9°), V2 (0.9°), V3 (1.0°)], but also evident for the 7° condition [V1 (0.5°), V2 (0.5°), V3 (0.9°)]. Further, an overall enlargement of pRF-sizes was observed. These findings indicate the dependence of foveal pRF parameters on the spatial extent of the stimulated visual field and are likely associated with methodological biases and/or physiological mechanisms. Consequently, our results imply that, previously reported similar findings in patients with actual peripheral scotomas need to be interpreted with caution and indicate the need for adequate control conditions in investigations of visual cortex reorganization.Past historical events and experimental research have shown complying with the orders from an authority has a strong impact on people's behaviour. However, the mechanisms underlying how obeying orders influences moral behaviours remain largely unknown. Here, we test the hypothesis that when male and female humans inflict a painful stimulation to another individual, their empathic response is reduced when this action complied with the order of an experimenter (coerced condition) in comparison with being free to decide to inflict that pain (free condition). We observed that even if participants knew that the shock intensity delivered to the 'victim' was exactly the same during coerced and free conditions, they rated the shocks as less painful in the coerced condition. MRI results further indicated that obeying orders reduced activity associated with witnessing the shocks to the victim in the ACC, insula/IFG, TPJ, MTG and dorsal striatum (including the caudate and the putamen) as well as neural signatures of vicarious pain in comparison with being free to decide. We also observed that participants felt less responsible and showed reduced activity in a multivariate neural guilt signature in the coerced than in the free condition, suggesting that this reduction of neural response associated with empathy could be linked to a reduction of felt responsibility and guilt. These results highlight that obeying orders has a measurable influence on how people perceive and process others' pain. This may help explain how people's willingness to perform moral transgressions is altered in coerced situations. We experience a rich variety of emotions in daily life, and a fundamental goal of affective neuroscience is to determine how these emotions are represented in the brain. Recent psychological studies have used naturalistic stimuli (e.g., movies) to reveal high dimensional representational structures of diverse daily-life emotions. CHS828 However, relatively little is known about how such diverse emotions are represented in the brain because most of the affective neuroscience studies have used only a small number of controlled stimuli. To reveal that, we measured functional MRI to obtain blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) responses from human subjects while they watched emotion-inducing audiovisual movies over a period of 3 hours. For each of the one-second movie scenes, we annotated the movies with respect to 80 emotions selected based on a wide range of previous emotion literature. By quantifying canonical correlations between the emotion ratings and the BOLD responses, the results suggest that around 25 distinct dimensions (ranging from 18 to 36 and being subject-dependent) of the emotion ratings contribute to emotion representations in the brain. For demonstrating how the 80 emotion categories were represented in the cortical surface, we visualized a continuous semantic space of the emotion representation and mapped it on the cortical surface. We found that the emotion categories were changed from unimodal to transmodal regions on the cortical surface. This study presents a cortical representation of a rich variety of emotion categories, which covers many of the emotional experiences of daily living.Cerebral artery segmentation plays an important role in the direct visualization of the human brain to obtain vascular system information. On ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging, cerebral arteries appearing hyperintense on T1 weighted (T1w) images could be segmented from brain tissues such as gray and white matter. In this study, we propose an automated method to segment the cerebral arteries using multi-contrast images including T1w images of a magnetization-prepared two rapid acquisition gradient echo (MP2RAGE) sequence at 7 T. The proposed method, termed MP2rase-CA (MP2rage based RApid SEgmentation Cerebral Artery), employed a seed-based region-growing strategy and Frangi filtering as well as our brain tissue segmentation (MP2rase Brain Tissue). Time-of-flight (TOF) magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) images were obtained as a reference to evaluate the MP2rase-CA. We successfully performed vessel segmentations, from T1w MP2RAGE images, which mostly overlapped with the segmentations of large cerebral arteries from the TOF-MRA. We also investigated the effect of the large cerebral arteries on spatial transformation of anatomical images to standard coordinate space using vessel segmentation by MP2rase-CA. As a result, the T1w image without the cerebral arteries by MP2rase-CA showed better agreement with the standard atlas compared with the T1w image containing the arteries. In addition, voxel-based morphology showed significant differences between T1w images with and without cerebral arteries in brain areas nearby large arteries. Thus, because MP2rase-CA using MP2RAGE images can obtain brain tissue anatomical information as well as relatively large cerebral artery information without need for additional structure acquisition, it is useful and time saving for functional and structural studies.Neuroimaging studies have shown that the brain is functionally organized into several large-scale brain networks. Within these networks are regions that are widely connected to several other regions within and/or outside the network. Regions that connect to several other networks, known as connector hubs, are believed to be crucial for information transfer and between-network communication within the brain. To identify regions with high between-network connectivity at the voxel level, we introduced a novel metric called functional connectivity overlap ratio (FCOR), which quantifies the spatial extent of a region's connection to a given network. Using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging data, FCOR maps were generated for several well-known large-scale resting state networks (RSNs) and used to examine the relevant associations among different RSNs, identify connector hub regions in the cerebral cortex, and elucidate the hierarchical functional organization of the brain. Constructed FCOR maps revealed a strong association among the core neurocognitive networks (default mode, salience, and executive control) as well as among primary processing networks (sensorimotor, auditory, and visual).
