Is a Bedside Crib Co Sleeper Right For Your Baby?
A crib that sleeps in bed is a great option when you want your baby to be close for a peaceful evening feeding. They are a safe alternative to traditional Moses baskets, based on the official guidelines for safe sleeping from the Lullaby Trust and NHS.
Home test subjects love that the crib can rotate 360 degrees to make it easy to access and features an adjustable mattress height to match your bed. Additionally, it folds easily and comes with a bag for travel for trips away from home.
Safety
Bedside cribs are a great way to keep baby close by at night without the risk of suffocation or overheating. They attach to the side of your bed so that you can easily reach out to soothe or feed your child during the night. They're also ideal for mums recovering from the c-section. There's plenty to consider before you invest in one.
If you're shopping for a bedside crib make sure you're looking at an item that is in line with current safety standards. A lot of cribs older than that were recalls due to the danger of strangulation or entrapment caused by the gaps between the mattress as well as the sides of the crib. Be sure that the crib you pick is in compliance with the new BS EN1130 safety standard, which will be introduced in November 2020.
The most significant change to the new regulations is that bedside cribs can not have drop-down sides. Most models have 'half height' walls, which still allow your child to lie next to your bed, but provide a more protective barrier because they sink a little beneath the mattress. All of the models on our list comply with these new requirements, including the Graco Pack 'n Play on the Go and the Chicco Lullago both of which were shortlisted in the Mother&Baby Awards 2017.
Verify that the crib is securely affixed to your bed and that it is properly secured. This is especially crucial if you intend to use it with a sleeper that is a sidecar, such as the freestanding Graco Pack 'n Play on the go or the Graco BassiNest Premiere, which were both shortlisted for the Mother&Baby awards.
It's also important to keep in mind that a crib should only be used for sleeping and should never be used in conjunction with bedding or accessories, like pillows, blankets toys or toys for stuffed animals. The Lullaby Trust, along with the AAP have issued a safe sleep advice that states that infants should only sleep in their crib or cot and not on an adult's bed, or any other type of soft furniture.
Comfort
A crib for your bed lets you keep your baby close throughout the night, without the danger of bed-sharing, which could increase the risk of SIDS. You can also reach over to soothe your baby without having to get out of bed during the middle of the night. It's a good alternative to a Moses Basket or infant bassinet that's safe, easy to use and comfortable for your new baby and babies until 6 months old.
The most effective models come with slats that are wide and open enough to allow air circulation. They also feature windows or doors that can be rolled up or down when needed. It's easy to change your baby's diaper or nurse them, or monitor their sleep at the end of the night. Some models include the swaddle bag to aid in creating a safe sleeping routine.
You'll want a mattress that is light and compact when folded making it easy to move around the house or to take with you on your travels. bedside crib and cot must be removable and washable, making it easy to clean. A pocket on the other side is useful to store nappies or baby clothes.
Some cribs for bedside use mattresses, while others need to purchase separately. Make sure the mattress is flat, firm and breathable. Avoid second-hand mattresses as they increase the risk of SIDS.
Find a crib that can be adjusted to the bed's height. Especially if you're recovering from C-section surgery A bedside crib that has an adjustable height can give you a greater chances of getting in and out of bed easily particularly in the early weeks of recovering.
Certain models come with useful extras, such as a tummy-tilt to prevent reflux, or a detachable moses' basket which can later be used as a playpen for toddlers. Other extras to consider are whether the crib is rocking, folds down to lie flat for storage or comes with a bag for travel. It's also worth looking into how much the model costs and what bedding is included - it's usually necessary to purchase separate sheets for your baby's bedside crib.
Style
Bedside cribs are a fantastic option for mothers who are new. They allow them to keep an eye on their baby during the night and during diaper changes without having to get out of the bed. They also help babies settle after a csection or when recovering from other medical conditions such as reflux or colic.
Choosing the right bedside crib for your child is based on your requirements and your lifestyle. Aside from the obvious safety features, consider whether you'd like to be capable of lifting your baby out of the crib to feed them or soothe them and if it comes with any extras such as the ability to rock. Examine the height and size of your bed to ensure that any crib you pick will fit comfortably.
Bedside cribs are less expensive than Moses Baskets, however they still have amazing features, like the breathable mesh, the see-through sides, an option for reflux incline and an adjustable height. The Tutti Bambini CoZee is our favourite, as it combines both practicality and style into the perfect co-sleeper. It's available in three colors with stylish oak legs to make it a great fit for any bedroom. It's also simple to put together and fold up, and comes with a handy carry bag for trips to grandparent's.
Some cribs come with side panels that can be lowered down to allow you to touch your baby during the day and for safer co-sleeping, but then come back up at the night. This feature is available on the Arm's Reach Clear View Co-Sleeper for instance, but one of our MFM Home testers found it difficult to use at first.
The bedding you choose to use in a bedside crib should be a good fit and must not leave any gaps that could serve as suffocation dangers. This is the reason that many cribs have mattresses that are fitted, but you can purchase suitable sheets at a variety of retailers. It's a good idea avoid mattresses that are second-hand, as they may be worn out and degrade over time, posing a risk of increasing the risk of SIDS.
Bedside cribs also are much lighter and more portable than Moses baskets. This makes them easier to transport from room to rooms, or to take when you go on trips on. The best bedside cribs are small enough to fit in the carry bag, so that you can easily transport them on short trips.
Convenience
Bedside cribs allow you to observe your baby without having to worry about them rolling off the mattress or becoming suffocated. It's important to keep in mind that the official safety guidelines for sleep from the Lullaby Trust and NHS recommends you only co-sleep with your child for the first six months with an additional bed in the same room to lower the chance of SIDS.
Based on the model you choose, the bedside crib may have features that make it more convenient. One of the cribs that received the highest ratings in our MFM home test swivels, and is adjustable in the height so that it is easier to reach and pick your child up. The model comes with a sidewall that slopes down. One MFM home tester said that this allowed her to gain access" to help their child.
Some models have additional extras for example, the ability to rock (useful for babies with a lot of fuss) or an incline setting to aid with reflux. These are beneficial if your child has an illness that causes reflux, but your newborn should be sleeping on a firm, flat mattress to avoid suffocation and overheating.
When selecting a fabric be aware of how easy it will be to clean. Find out if the fabric can be machine washable and if it has a waterproof protector to guard against leaky nappies or dribbles. Some cribs come with a fitted sheet that makes it easier to wash and change.
Other factors to consider include how easy it is to assemble and how compact it is when folded away. Make sure it's simple to attach to your bed and if it has a bag to use for travel. Consider if the product has additional features, such as a tummy tilt or the possibility of converting it into the form of a Moses basket for older children. This can be helpful when traveling.
