The current literature suggests that men with diabetes have a lower prostate-specific antigen concentration than men without diabetes, but the causal association remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between serum prostate-specific antigen concentrations and the risk of type2 diabetes mellitus in a cohort study of a Chinese population.
We designed a cohort study that comprised 16,811 initially non-diabetic Chinese men who received annual health checkups between 2009 and 2016. The outcome of this study was type2 diabetes mellitus, identified by medical diagnosis, self-reportage, medication use, fasting glucose, 2-h post oral glucose or glycated hemoglobin measurements. Cox proportional hazards models were carried out to evaluate the association.
During a median follow-up period of 3.8years (interquartile range 1.91-5.73years), 1,260 participants developed incident type2 diabetes mellitus. The multivariable model, adjusted for various potential confounders, showed that serum prostate-specific antigen concentrations were inversely related to type2 diabetes mellitus risk (P for trend=0.014). Compared with the lowest quartile of serum prostate-specific antigen, the hazard ratio and 95% confidence intervals of type2 diabetes mellitus risk for quartile 2-4 were 0.84 (0.66-1.07), 0.75 (0.59-0.94) and 0.77 (0.62-0.96), respectively. Subgroup analyses suggested the inverse relationship was more prominent in overweight or obese participants (P for interaction=0.013).
High serum prostate-specific antigen concentration was associated with a low risk of type2 diabetes mellitus in Chinese men. Future studies are required to confirm these findings and investigate underlying mechanisms.

For the effective production of 146S particles, which determines foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine efficacy, we aimed to identify the optimal medium that is easy-to-use, productive and economically affordable for the large-scale production of FMD vaccine.
Nine combinations of cell growth media and replacement media were tested for virus propagation. Apart from the replacement strategy, we tested a simple addition strategy involving the addition of 30% v/v of fresh medium to the total spent medium using the Cellvento BHK-200 (Vento). Unlike other tested media that produced poor yields of 146S particles when the spent media were not eliminated, Vento exhibited high productivity with the 30% addition strategy.
Considering its lower price and media consumption compared to those of other media that require media replacement, the 30% addition strategy of Vento is highly effective. Furthermore, owing to its simple application strategy, it makes the scale-up process easy and helps in saving the time and labour involved in spent media removal.
Through the first comparative assessment of commercial media for the 146S particle recovery, this study suggests the best practical medium for the industrial-scale production of FMD vaccines.

Here, we report the characterization of a spontaneous rice female sterile variation 1 mutant (fsv1) that showed severe embryo sacs abortion with low seed-setting rate. Through map-based cloning and functional analyses, we isolated the causal gene of fsv1, OsMLH3 encoding a MutL-homolog 3 protein, an ortholog of HvMLH3 in barley and AtMLH3 in Arabidopsis. OsMLH3 and OsMLH1 (MutL-homolog 1) interact to form a heterodimer (MutLγ) to promote crossover formation in the macrospore and microspore mother cells and development of functional megaspore during meiosis, defective OsMLH3 or OsMLH1 in fsv1 and CRISPR/Cas9-based knockout lines results in reduced type I crossover and bivalent frequency. The fsv1 and OsMLH3-knockout lines are valuable germplasms for development of female sterile restorer lines for mechanized seed production of hybrid rice.
Dark circles are one of the most perplexing cosmetic problems for modern people. Nowadays, a new porcine collagen filler has been popular in China and many countries and has high safety.
The purpose of this study is to explore and quantify the efficacy of this collagen filler in treating structured dark circles objectively and systematically.
This is a prospective study. Twenty patients were included and took standard facial photographs at preoperative (Tp), immediately postoperative (T0), 1week (T1), 2weeks (T2), 4weeks (T4), 8weeks (T8), and 12weeks (T12). The efficacy was quantified by measuring the depression of the tear trough and infraorbital melanin content. Three dermatologists blinded to the treatment were responsible for completing the subjective evaluations.
The depression volume, depression-affected area, and depression maximum depth of the tear trough decreased significantly immediately postoperation, and then all values increased slowly with time (P<.05). After 3-month observation, we found that the residual effect of the treatment is 45.08%±15.53% (T8) and 17.37%±16.79% (T12). The melanin contents at the medial point (A), the middle point (B), and the lateral point (C) all decreased instantly after injection (A 8.23%±5.07%, B 6.29%±5.05%, C 5.11%±5.44% ), which suggested that collagen filler had an instant covering effect for structural dark circles. Patients showed only slight redness and swelling after the treatment.
Collagen filler is a very effective treatment method for structural dark circles. Besides, it may also have a certain therapeutic effect on the other three dark circles types.
