Newborn Bedside Cot
A newborn bedside cot is a small sleeper that allows babies to share a room as their parents without the risks of true co-sleeping (which the AAP cautions against due SIDS and suffocation). It makes it easier to care for your baby and give them a bottle throughout the night.
This sleeper has a sturdy mattress that is designed to support babies' backs and minimize the chance of SIDS. It can be swiveled on your adult bed so that you can carry your baby to the top to snuggle them at sunrise or for nighttime nursing.
Budget
A bedside cot, sometimes referred to as a co-sleeper, the bassinet-style baby cot that clips or attaches to your existing bed. This lets you reach your baby quickly and safely for a nighttime feed or comforting cuddle. They are a great choice for mums or new parents recovering from a csection as they provide an easy access to baby and don't require you to get up.
There are lots of different designs on the market starting with basic models that have only a drop-down side, to more sophisticated models that can be adjusted in multiple ways, including incline and height options. The majority of them can be converted to an independent crib once your baby grows older and has a longer sleep time at night.
One of our favorites is the Maxi-Cosi Lora, which was nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. MFM home tester Emily said she was impressed by how chic and modern the design as well as the possibility of using it as a regular bassinet, or clip it to a bed to sleep side-by-side in a safe and secure manner. She also liked the plush mattress, which has passed our test for firmness and also the fact that it comes with an automatic rocking feature that can be adjusted to a slight slope for reflux sufferers.
She wasn't a fan of the fact that it had a non mesh panel at the bottom and she thought it was too heavy to move around from room to room. When it was folded into its travel bag she found it somewhat heavy to carry up the stairs.
Size
A bedside cot is similar to an infant bassinet that is attached to the side of your bed. You can easily reach your baby for feedings, changing nappies or comforting in the middle of the night. It's also great for mothers recovering from C-sections.
The NHS and Lullaby Trust advise you to keep your baby in the same space as you, but separated from you for the first six months since this will help decrease the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). A bedside crib is a safe method to achieve this as it is low-sided and allows you to easily access your newborn throughout the night.
It is essential that your baby sleeps on a firm mattress as this is safer than a mattress that is soft. A mattress that is soft increases the risk of suffocation for newborns, as they lack the motor control needed to turn. The soft, breathable fabric and skin-friendly materials make the mattress comfortable for your baby, but firm enough for safety.
Mum home tester Jasmin loved that the crib does not take up a lot of space in her bedroom and she found the size to be perfect for a newborn. She also said that the mattress was also of good quality, as opposed to some that feel flimsy and thin. She also likes that it has a storage space beneath to store blankets and clothing which she believes many other bassinets lack.
Mehack, a MFM mom who tried the product at home, likes that you can remove the side wall to allow for easier access to your baby. She also loves the fact that the legs can be put under the bed to look less bulky and occupy less area on the floor. She's also amazed by the ease of being able to move around the house when you want to in the middle of the night, which is convenient for feedings and check-ins.
A winner of an Gold award at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards, the CoZee Air is a popular choice amongst parents. It is designed with four pulleys built-in to raise or lower the crib. It comes with a large storage bin for toys, blankets and other necessities. It is also lightweight and easy to put together which makes it perfect to travel with your baby.
bedside cot newborn to consider the safety of the crib for your newborn. The official safety sleep guidelines of both the Lullaby Trust and NHS recommends that babies do not sleep in parent's beds due to the risk of suffocation, overheating and a higher chance of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Bassinets for bedside use allow parents to keep their baby close, facilitating nighttime feedings, comforting and monitoring without needing to get up from their beds.
This close proximity can help breastfeeding mothers as it lets them attend to the baby's needs while still sleeping. This can help maintain the supply of milk and also encourage breastfeeding. Some cots for bedside have adjustable height features that can ensure that the bassinet is at an ideal height for mother and baby for ease of access during feedings or for care.
Many bassinets come with a firm mattress, which is designed to decrease suffocation risk and meets the standards of the industry. It is essential to support the bones of a newborn, as they are still soft and aren't fully formed. The mattress should be covered with a fitted sheet to reduce the risk of suffocation due to dust mites or other allergens and kept hygienically clean and free from irritants.
Some cribs on the bed can be tilted. This is beneficial for babies with digestive or reflux issues. However, it should be done with care and with care. Avoid placing bedside cot used , duvets, or padded crib bumpers inside the bassinet. These can pose a risk of suffocation for your baby.
It is also recommended to consider a bassinet that has a secure attachment system. This can be attached to your existing bed easily without the need of tools. This can be especially helpful for parents who may struggle to get their child in and out of the crib or who are concerned about rolling over during sleep. If your bassinet has secured attachments it's a good idea to regularly ensure that it's securely secured and that there are no gaps or loose parts that could cause danger.
Comfort
If you're expecting a child and you're worried about the safety of your baby is surely one of your top priorities. There's a new solution to sleep that lets you keep your baby close to you in the evening, without the risk of sharing a bed. The baby bedside cot is basically a bassinet-style cot that fixes to the bed's side, allowing you to safely move them towards you to feed them at night and soothe. It's also the perfect choice for mothers recovering from a c-section, because it eliminates the need to bend down too far or even get out of bed.
Modern bedside cots for babies should be fitted with a firm, flat mattress to encourage safe sleep habits and reduce the risk Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Bedding should be simple comprising a cot sheets and a blanket that is tightly tucked at the bottom. Avoid toys, bumpers or pillows as these could fall on your baby and create a risk of suffocation. If your baby is used to being swaddled you can make use of a swaddle, or a baby sleep bag for the first few weeks, although it is best to remove it as soon as you can once they've developed the strength to pull themselves out of the wrap.
Some bedside cribs have a drop-down or removable side that allows easy access to your newborn for middle-of-the-night feeds and comforting. This is a great feature for parents looking to maintain an intimate relationship with their child while still following NHS safe sleep advice. However, if you're planning to co-sleep in the same bed with your child it's important to know that this practice has been associated with an increased risk of SIDS especially when a parent accidentally rolls onto their child during sleep.
A breathable fabric will keep your baby comfortable and cool throughout the night. This is especially crucial if you plan to sleep with your baby as the risk of overheating when sleeping increases. The SnuzPod4 features a unique mesh side panel that is breathable that helps improve the airflow and keeps your baby comfortable in their bed.
