Buying a Bedside Crib For Travel
Mums love this crib's size it's larger than the Moses basket but smaller than a cot bed. It also folds down to just a third of its original size and fits into a compact travel bag, making it ideal for travel.
Make sure that the crib is only for sleeping. Toys such as pillows, blankets and pillows can cause a child to be suffocated.
Safety
When you are shopping for a travel cot ensure that the manufacturer complies with all safety standards. The Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) website is the best place to start. It will let you know whether a crib for portable use has ever been recalled. Pick a mattress that's suitable for the crib of your baby so it doesn't slide through the gaps or create an suffocation hazard.
Find bassinets or cribs that meet the updated safety standards of 2022. Avoid cribs with older designs and designed for travel or cribs with drop-sides. These cribs have not been tested and could be a danger to your baby's safety.
A travel crib must be sturdy and well-constructed. Make sure there aren't any loose, missing or broken screws as well as other hardware. If you're using a playard it should have mesh windows and sturdy walls to allow air circulation. The crib's slats should be no more than 2 and 3/8 inches apart, to keep baby's head and limbs from becoming trapped. Also, never put pillows, blankets, stuffed animals or toys in the crib. These items could cause strangulation or death to your baby. They should be removed at the time they are able to stand on their own, or before the age of 5 months.
Examine often for broken or loose screws and hardware. This is particularly important when traveling with a child. Remove all plastic from the crib as well.
If you are using a portable crib ensure that it's not placed in front of a large window. Windows pose an accident hazard and if your baby falls into it, they could be injured. Even if your child is old enough to roll over it is best to keep their sleeping area away from windows. If your baby starts to roll over in bed it's best to get them up in order to avoid injuries.
Portability
Portable cribs (or playards which is what they're sometimes referred to as) are a great choice for those who are traveling on vacation, having a family stay over, or simply wanting a safe crib for use for a sleepover with friends. These foldable contraptions include a comfortable mattress that can hold babies up to 15kg. bedside cots for newborns are simple to assemble and compact when closed.
MFM home testers love the BabyBjorn travel crib because it's easy to fold and to store. Its simple drop down panels that can be operated by one hand are also convenient to use for parents who are tired. It's not the lightest backpack on our list but it's a decent weight at just a little over 15 pounds, and it has regular handles instead of an e-bag strap, which some find more comfortable to carry around.
Another option that is worth considering is the Joie Kubbie Sleep, which incorporates a bedside crib and bassinet into one compact unit that's ideal for both holidays and overnight visits to family and friends. It's not the cheapest, but it has many all-singing and all-dancing features such as a storage basket and soothing night lights that change colour, lullabies and white noise to help your baby fall asleep, and its bassinet setting is higher than other models to make it easier to use in the beginning of the day when mom is still recovering.
It's also easy to keep clean, with wipeable and machine-washable fabrics. In spite of its size and weight (it's on the bulkier side when opened) it's light at just 12kg and fits neatly into a compact, convenient travel bag included - perfect for trips away from home. It has six different height settings and an adjustable tummy tilt for reflux or colic babies. It can fit all sizes of beds. It is also very easy to install. Our MFM tester was able to do it in just 10 minutes. It'll require a mattress that is separate.
Feeding
It's crucial that your baby is safe and comfortable when you travel, whether for business or pleasure. It is better to buy a bassinet or crib designed for travel than to use one that you already have. They are smaller and have mesh sides that allow parents to check on their baby without causing any disturbance to them. They are also lightweight for easy transportation between destinations. They also meet all the safety standards of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and haven't been subject to recalls.
If you have to use a crib that is placed at your bedside, it's recommended that your child be laid on their backs and the mattress be free of blankets, pillows and animals stuffed. Sharing sleeping in a bed with parents isn't advised for any baby regardless of age, and this form of sleeping together is associated with an increased risk of SIDS. If you do have to sleep with your partner at times, make sure that your baby is sleeping and that both you and your partner are dressed and awake.
There are a variety of cribs for babies and newborns.
Some are shaped as a mini-crib or Moses basket while others have sides which can be lowered into the parents' beds. This allows parents to access their baby at any time during the night to soothe and feed them, while avoiding the dangers of co-sleeping. The AAP warns against this because of the danger of suffocation. Examples include the Arm's Reach Clear-Vue Bassinet, a bedside sleeper that attaches to the side of a mattress for a parent. This can also be an option for older children because the sides can be easily raised to allow you to reach the baby from the adult bed without lifting them out. Another option is the travel cot, which has a built-in bassinet which can be removed from the top of the crib making it easier to raise an infant who is sleeping for feeding or care.
Sleeping
Bedside cribs are an excellent way to safely co-sleep with your baby. They are placed near your bed at night, so that you can reach out easily for feedings at night and observe them without disrupting their sleep. Some cribs have drop-sides that can be lowered to make it easier for you to do this, while others have a height adjustment to ensure they can fit into your bed at home and away.
Although it was previously advised that infants sleep in their own separate bedroom, there's a growing preference for parents to co-sleep with their infants. Also known as rooming in, this arrangement lets babies be close to their parents, but remain safely separated on their own crib or bassinet. There are many types of co-sleepers such as the iCrib, which is an inflatable crib that is designed to be able to sit on the top of a bed or a crib. It includes a light frame, a mattress that is removable and is able to be folded into a compact size for storage. The Joie Roomie Go crib is another alternative. It attaches to the bed edge and has seven height positions and a tummy-tilt to help with colic and reflux. The crib was praised by our MFM home testers for its ease of use and compact folding, and it's also available in a variety of colors.
There are also bedside cribs, like our Lilly and Alain cribs, which can be placed next to an existing bed frame. The cribs come with an elongated side that can slide down to allow you to pick up your baby for feedings at night. However, the cribs are self-contained, allowing your baby to remain asleep peacefully. These models meet the new BS EN1130:2019 safety standards that require a 120mm barrier between your mattress and the child's crib.
Additionally, there are cribs for travel that are specially made to be carried on the road. They are usually smaller and less bulky than standard cribs and are therefore easier to carry in and out of cars and hotels. The Munchkin Brica travel crib, for example, can be set up and packed down in less than one minute, and weighs just 3 pounds, so it is easy to lift and carry.
