It is able to pause and resume the cleaning process at any point, so that you can continue doing chores while it works. While this robot can't clean as well as our top-rated models but it excels in removing small particles such as baking soda and sand and heavier items like orzo pasta and screws made of metal. The only drawback is that it can't mop and has a less impressive navigation system.

The best for Carpet

If you have carpeting, pick one with a high rating for carpet and rug mobility and pickup. A lot of models are adept at picking up dust in low-pile carpets, and some are capable of picking up heavier debris, such as orzo pasta and metal screws. However, they aren't able to pick up small particles as well as canister or upright vacuums and may also be unable to pick up dirt in the vicinity of baseboards and thresholds.

The best option for carpeted homes is a two-in-one robot vacuum/mop, which allows you to swap out the cleaning bin as well as a damp mopping pad. It has a large charging dock that can go weeks without needing to be empty and has impressive navigation skills and auto-emptying on carpets and floors. It's also got a smart-mapping feature and can be programmed to only operate during certain hours of the day (a handy feature for keeping mischievous kids and dextrous pets from causing chaos). The Shark isn't as powerful as other mop/robot combination models, but it still manages to pick hair and pet hair with a high degree of accuracy. It's also the best price of our top picks.

Best for Hard Flooring

Robot vacuums are the ideal option for hardwood floors since they are able to navigate around obstacles without damaging surfaces that are not bare. self cleaning vacuum are great for removing dust and crumbs, but struggle with pet hair and larger debris. They lack the suction of a high-end canister or upright vacuum, which makes them unsuitable for deep cleaning carpeted or upholstery areas.

The best robots are two-in-one, combining mop and vacuum to complete the task in one move. Look for one that has an onboard sensor that can detect any changes in the flooring and adjust suction in line with the changes. If your home is primarily comprised of hardwood floors, you should consider a robotic mop and vacuum combo like the eufy S1 Pro. This model features an efficient robot vacuum with smart navigation to clean hardwood and other hard surfaces. Additionally, it can mop too. Its sensors help it avoid the stairs and other hazards, so you don't have to worry about the bot plummeting down the stairs and damaging your hardwood.

The eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to clean hardwood floors using downward pressure, instead of simply swab them to get rid of dust and dirt. The pads that are reusable reduce waste and help to spread less germs. They can also be cleaned at docking stations to reduce time. The mops can also be cleaned and dried to avoid spreading mold.

Both the robovac as well as the mop are both controlled by your smartphone, making it easier to manage the device. A couple of years ago, robotic vacuums went through a major change when manufacturers started adding sensors to help navigate around and avoid household objects that their traditional sensors would become stuck on or over. The improvements in technology reduced the number of times our testers had to clean up after a robotic snag.

The new sensors haven't eliminated all issues with these devices however. The lower-end models are not able to traverse the same obstacles as the older models, and they require some level of illumination to be able to see where they're going. This allows them to work in darkness and avoid obstacles such as stairs.

In addition being capable of working in the dark, these models can be configured to use their cliff sensors only on or near the floor, not above them. It is still recommended to cover any mirrors that may interfere with this function, however, because the lasers used by a LIDAR-based model can bounce off reflective surfaces, causing the robot to think it's in another room.
