In Sonnet III, Petrarch uses an extended metaphor to compare falling in love to being trapped and struck by an arrow. The speaker explains how love surprises him, like an ambush. He describes himself as defenseless and weak against Love’s attack. For example, in lines 1–2, Petrarch says, “I fell a captive, Lady, to the sway / Of your swift eyes,” which shows how the Lady’s look is like a trap that catches him without warning. Later, in line 4, he continues the metaphor with the line, “Love caught me naked to his shaft, his sheaf,” where Love is represented as an archer shooting arrows at him. Finally, in line 10, the speaker shares how his heart became “the entrance for his ambush and surprise,” highlighting how sudden and unavoidable his feelings are. Using this extended metaphor, Petrarch conveys how deeply emotional and powerless the speaker feels under Love’s control.
