Treatment For ADHD


The main treatment options for add are medications and psychosocial therapy (psychotherapy). Medications can include stimulants like amphetamine and methylphenidate, as well as non-stimulants such as atomoxetine, viloxazine, guanfacine, clonidine and gu.

The use of stimulants are not recommended for patients with active substance abuse problems but they can be considered in those who are in stable recovery. Combination therapy with antidepressants, particularly SSRIs, is an alternative option.

Stimulants increase norepinephrine and dopamine levels between synapses in the brain. This improves concentration and reduces impulses and hyperactivity. Most doctors prescribe stimulant medications to treat ADHD. They might prescribe methylphenidate (Concerta or Ritalin) or amphetamines. Both are similar medications. The type of medicine prescribed will depend on the person's biochemistry as well as how well they respond to the medicine. It can take up to seven days for full effects of a medication to be apparent. Improved concentration, better memory, better sleep, and reduced impulse control are all indications that the medication is working.

Some of the side effects can include decreased appetite, difficulty sleeping and an increase in blood pressure and heart rate. Some people with a medical condition, such as high blood pressure or heart disease should not use them. They are highly prone for abuse and are closely controlled drugs. Only psychiatrists or paediatricians, or in some cases general practitioners, may prescribe stimulants. They can be found in the form of tablets or pills, a patch that goes on the skin, or in liquids.

Children and adolescents who take stimulants often experience appetite problems and weight loss. They may also experience tics when the dosage is too high. If this occurs, the doctor will reduce the dosage to avoid the drug from leading to a worsening of symptoms.

Stimulant medicines are used for about 70% to 80 percent of adults and children with ADHD. add treatments for adults of children and young people find that their symptoms improve through treatment. This is especially true for those who have parents, teachers or carers that can report improvements.

The early use of stimulants can lower the risk of developing substance use disorders later in the course of. Wilens Katusic, Wilens, and colleagues81,82 and Biederman and colleagues83, found that stimulant therapy reduces the risk of acquiring substance use disorders in the adolescent years. However the protective effect diminishes as we enter early adulthood.
