Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a condition of the vaginal microbiome in which there are few lactobacilli and abundant anaerobic bacteria. Members of the genus Gardnerella are often one of the most abundant bacteria in BV. BV is associated with a wide variety of poor health outcomes for women. It has been recognized since the 1980s that women with BV have detectable and sometimes markedly elevated levels of sialidase activity in vaginal fluids and that bacteria associated with this condition produce this activity in culture. Mounting evidence collected using diverse methodologies points to the conclusion that BV is associated with a reduction in intact sialoglycans in cervicovaginal secretions. Here we review evidence for the contributions of vaginal bacteria, especially Gardnerella, in the processes of mucosal sialoglycan degradation, uptake, metabolism and depletion. Our understanding of the impacts of vaginal sialoglycan degradation is still limited. However, the potential implications of sialic acid depletion are discussed in light of our current understanding of the roles played by sialoglycans in vaginal physiology.
Although limited effective and affordable treatment options exist for hidradenitis suppurativa, recent studies describe the effectiveness of a medical therapy, infliximab, for the treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa. Cost-saving biosimilar alternatives have recently become available, but no data currently exist on their safety and effectiveness.
To evaluate the effectiveness of infliximab-abda vs infliximab administration associated with the treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa.
This retrospective cohort study identified patients treated with infliximab or infliximab-abda between 2016 and 2020 at the dermatology clinic at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The study population included patients who met the clinical criteria for hidradenitis suppurativa and had received a continuous dose of infliximab or infliximab-abda for at least 10 weeks. In total, 62 potential participants were identified using clinical tracking lists on the electronic medical records, and 34 participants were inclu different (P = .47).
This cohort study found that both infliximab administration and infliximab-abda administration were associated with similar and significant improvement in disease as measured by the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Clinical Response. Infliximab-abda is likely a reasonable treatment option for hidradenitis suppurativa, and further research is warranted.

Wrightia tinctoria R. Br. (Apocyanaceae) is known as biologically effective jaundice plant in Indian traditional system of medicine. It is a wild medicinal tree possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-nociceptive, hepatoprotective, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-psoriatic, anti-cancerous, anthelmintic, aphrodisiac, analgesic, and antipyretic activities. Its constituents serve foremost interest to pharmaceutical industries owing to their multi-function action and biological activities.
Methanolic extract of Wrightia tinctoria (MEWT) was investigated by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy and provided affirmative results which helps in identification and characterization of therapeutic claim of it in traditional system. The antioxidant activity of MEWT was determined by most suitable DPPH method.
The basic compounds found in MEWT were β-caryophyllene (0.22%); mome inositol (12.02%); neophytadiene (1.61%); eicosanoic acid methyl ester (0.32%); 8,11,14-eicosatrienoic acid methyl ester (0.60%); phytol (0.94%); phytol palmitate (1.37%); squalene (1.57%); flavone 4-OH,5-OH,7-di-O-glucoside (29.34%); γ-tocopherol (0.49%); stigmast-5-en-3-ol (3.14%); methyl commate B (1.76%); methyl commate A (5.20%) and 24-norursa-3,12-diene (20.36%). The obtained results in the analysis of antioxidant activity of MEWT exhibited considerable free radical scavenging capacity against DPPH generated free radicals.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) serological assays have emerged as a response to the global pandemic, warranting studies evaluating their clinical performance. This study investigated seven commercially available SARS-CoV-2 serological assays in samples from non-infected individuals and hospitalized patients.
SARS-CoV-2 qualitative serological assays by Abbott (IgG), Beckman (IgG), DiaSorin (IgG), EUROIMMUN (IgG and IgA), Roche and Bio-Rad (Total) were evaluated using specimens collected pre-December 2019 (n=393), from nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) negative patients (n=40), and from 53 patients with COVID-19 by NAAT collected 3-21 days post-onset of symptoms (POS) (N=83). Negative agreement (NA), positive agreement (PA), and positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) at prevalences of 5% and 10% were calculated.
The overall %NA;95% CI in the negative samples were Roche 99.8%; 99.3-100.2, Beckman 99.8%; 98.7-100.0, Abbott and Bio-Rad 99.3%; 98.0-99.9, Dys. While the Bio-Rad assay demonstrated higher antibody detection in COVID-19-positive patients, PA claims cannot be established with a high level of confidence in our sample population.

To assess the extent to which variation in preterm birth by race/ethnicity and nativity status is associated with state-level criminalizing vs inclusive immigrant policies.
This retrospective, cross-sectional study analyzed birth record data from all 50 states and the District of Columbia in 2018, as well as state-level indicators of inclusive and criminalizing immigrant policies. White, Black, Asian, and Latina women who had singleton births were included in the study. Statistical analysis was performed from June 1, 2020, to February 5, 2021. Two continuous variables were created to capture the number of criminalizing vs inclusive immigrant policies in effect as of 2017 in each state.
The main outcome measure was preterm birth (<37 weeks' gestation).
