Several reports suggest a role for AHN in pattern separation, cognitive flexibility, forgetting and reversal learning. It has been proposed that deficits in AHN might impair normal DG function, including pattern separation and cognitive flexibility, which could play a role on the etiology of affective disorders, such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this paper, we review recent scientific evidence suggesting that impairment of AHN may underlie the pathophysiology of affective disorders even in humans and that neurogenesis-inspired therapies may be a promising approach to reduce symptoms of affective disorders in humans.
This study aimed to elucidate the biological implication of miR-937 in cigarette smoke extract (CSE)-induced human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells and to further investigate its possible regulatory mechanism.
Public datasets were downloaded to identify differentially expressed genes and subjected to Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Online prediction site and luciferase reporter assay were applied to determine the target correlation between miR-937 and IL1B. selleckchem RT-qPCR, Western blot and Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISA) analyses were used to evaluate the expressions of indicated molecules. HBE cells were exposed with CSE (20 μg/mL) to construct the in vitro COPD model. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were measured through cell counting kit 8 and Annexin-V/propidium iodide (PI) staining assays.
IL1B was found to be up-regulated in COPD samples compared with healthy controls and had a high correlation with th may be achieved via targeting IL1B and inhibiting the TNF-α/IL-17 signaling pathway.
South Koreans continue to smoke at high rates. Tobacco manufacturers have a history of branding cigarettes with misleading descriptors including the introduction of low or ultra-low tar brand variants. The government bans traditional misleading descriptors (low, mild) but requires the presence of machine-assessed tar yields on cigarette packages. Literature suggests the presence of quantitative constituents can be misleading for smokers. We analyzed the machine-assessed tar value branding and the presence of additional branding that highlight tar levels on South Korean cigarette packs.
In August 2018, we analyzed 178 unique cigarette packs purchased in Seoul and Busan, South Korea using a systematic protocol. Cigarette packs were coded for tar levels and classified as ultra-low, low, mid, and high tar. The presence of misleading descriptors and any additional branding relating to tar or potentially indicating strength were also coded.
Machine-assessed tar yields ranged from 0.1 to 8 mg. Cigarettes with Korean consumers that some cigarettes are less harmful than others. Strengthening of tobacco packaging regulations to prohibit references to tar yields on packs are needed to further protect consumers.Tumor-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) play essential roles in intercellular communication during tumor growth and metastatic evolution. Currently, little is known about the possible roles of tumor-derived EVs in sarcoma because the lack of specific surface markers makes it technically challenging to purify sarcoma-derived EVs. In this study, a specific purification system is developed for Ewing sarcoma (ES)-derived EVs by coupling covalent chemistry-mediated EV capture/ release within a nanostructure-embedded microchip. The purification platform-ES-EV Click Chip-takes advantage of specific anti-LINGO-1 recognition and sensitive click chemistry-mediated EV capture, followed by disulfide cleavage-driven EV release. Since the device is capable of specific and efficient purification of intact ES EVs with high purity, ES-EV Click Chip is ideal for conducting downstream functional studies of ES EVs. Absolute quantification of the molecular hallmark of ES (i.e., EWS rearrangements) using reverse transcription Droplet Digital PCR enables specific quantification of ES EVs. The purified ES EVs can be internalized by recipient cells and transfer their mRNA cargoes, exhibiting their biological intactness and potential role as biological shuttles in intercellular communication.[This corrects the article DOI 10.1007/s10433-019-00535-9.].[This corrects the article DOI 10.1007/s10433-019-00529-7.].In this paper, we highlighted links between personality traits and successful ageing through a systematic review of recent empirical studies. Particularly, we addressed the question of whether personality traits are related to successful ageing and, if so, why and how? Answers to this question provided, for example, arguments that supported personality's role in planning an individual's future based on self-knowledge, thereby contributing to a sense of identity throughout their life. Then, considering longitudinal studies, we examined whether personality is stable over one's life course, or does it change and, if so, why and under what conditions? Answers to this question gave substance to the idea that a stable personality allows for continuous and consistent development. In addition, certain personality changes are likely to allow an individual to develop the resilience to better adapt to life's challenges. Therefore, the arguments brought by these two questions can help clarify the modulating role of personality for successful ageing via health and well-being outcomes. These insights may contribute to the development of new prevention approaches, more focused on inter- and intraindividual differences, to promote successful ageing.Self-perceptions of ageing (SPA) are important predictors of health in later life. However, research on antecedents of SPA other than age stereotypes is scarce. To address this gap, this study investigates the impact of personal value priorities beyond age stereotypes on SPA. Can values as the motivational basis of attitudes and evaluations predict gain- and loss-related SPA? To answer this question, we conducted multiple regression analyses of longitudinal data from two waves (2008, 2011) of the German Ageing Survey (DEAS; N = 6089, age range in 2008 40-93 years). Gain- and loss-related SPA as well as age stereotypes were assessed with two AgeCog scales and personal values with the 21-item Portrait Values Questionnaire. Results indicate that value priorities relate to SPA longitudinally in domain-specific ways People with a value priority of openness to change and self-transcendence reported more gain-related SPA at follow-up, whereas those who prioritized conservation reported less gain-related SPA. In the domain of loss-related SPA, those people with a value priority of self-enhancement reported more and those prioritizing self-transcendence reported less loss-related SPA at follow-up.
