One condition index showed no relationship with cumulative impact, whilst the other two indices had very small, negative relationships with cumulative impact. These results suggest that one of the most commonly used methods for assessing cumulative impacts on marine systems is not robust enough to accurately reflect the effect of multiple stressors on seagrasses; possibly due to the number and generality of assumptions involved in the approach. Future methods should acknowledge the complex relationships between stressors, and the impact these relationships can have on ecosystems. This outcome highlights the need for greater evaluation of cumulative impact assessment outputs and the need for data-driven approaches. Our results are a caution for marine scientists and resource managers who may rely on spatial cumulative impact assessment outputs for informing policy and decision-making.Agrochemicals such as pesticides and nutrients are concurrent chemical stressors in freshwater aquatic ecosystems surrounded by agricultural areas. Lentic small water bodies (LSWB) are ecologically significant habitats especially for maintaining biodiversity but highly understudied. Phytoplankton are ideal indicator species for stress responses. Functional features of the phytoplankton are important in revealing the processes that determine the structure of the communities. In this study, we investigated the effects of pesticides, nutrients, and local environmental variables on the species composition and functional features of phytoplankton communities in LSWB. We studied pesticide toxicity of ninety-four pesticides, three nutrients (NH4-N, NO3-N and PO4-P) and local environment variables (precipitation, water level change, temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration, electrical conductivity, pH) in five LSWB over twelve weeks during the spring pesticide application period. We explored respective changes in nness were negatively affected by PO4-P concentrations. Pesticide toxicity was positively correlated with functional redundancy indices. Our findings emphasized the relative importance of concurrent multiple stressors (e.g., pesticides and nutrients) on phytoplankton community structure, directing potential effects on metacommunity structures in aquatic ecosystems subjected to agricultural runoff.Particulate matter (PM) is acknowledged to have multiple detrimental effects on human health. In this review, we report literature results on the possible link between outdoor PM and health outcomes with a focus on pulmonary infections and the mechanisms responsible for observed negative effects. PM physical and chemical properties, such as size and chemical composition, as well as major emission sources are described for a more comprehensive view about the role played by atmospheric PM in the observed adverse health effects; to this aim, major processes leading to the deposition of PM in the respiratory tract and how this can pave the way to the onset of pathologies are also presented. From the literature works here reviewed, two ways in which PM can threaten human health promoting respiratory infectious diseases are mostly taken into account. The first pathway is related to an enhanced susceptibility and here we will also report on molecular mechanisms in the lung immune system responsible for the augmented susceptibility to pathogens, such as the damage of mechanical defensive barriers, the alteration of the innate immune response, and the generation of oxidative stress. The second one deals with the relationship between infectious agents and PM; here we recall that viruses and bacteria (BioPM) are themselves part of atmospheric PM and are collected during sampling together with particles of different origin; so, data should be analysed with caution in order to avoid any false cause-effect relation. To face these issues a multidisciplinary approach is mandatory as also evident from the ongoing research about the mechanisms hypothesized for the SARS-CoV-2 airborne spreading, which is still controversial and claims for further investigation. Therefore, we preferred not to include papers dealing with SARS-CoV-2.Machine vision techniques for monitoring heart rates in aquatic bioassays have been applied to cardiotoxicity assessment. However, the requisite large data sizes and long calculation times make long-term observations of heart rates difficult. In this study, we developed a real-time heart rate monitoring system for individual Daphnia magna in a water chamber mounter that immobilizes their movement in 100 mL media. Heart rates are calculated from real-time, time-resolved relative phase information from digital holograms acquired with a 200 fps camera and parallel computation using a graphics processing unit. D-Lin-MC3-DMA research buy With this system, we monitored the real-time changes in the heart rates of individual D. magna specimens exposed to H2O2 as a positive control for reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in an aquatic environment for 10 h, a period long enough to observe dynamic heart rate responses to the mounting process and exposure and to establish heart rate trends. An additional group analysis was conducted to compare to conventional cardiotoxicity assessment, with results of both assessments showing that the heart rates reduced according to ROS level by H2O2 exposure concentration. Notably, the results of our real-time dynamic heart rate monitoring in aquatic conditions indicated that establishing a relaxation heart rate before measurements could improve the accuracy of toxicity assessment. It is believed that the system developed in this study, achieving the simultaneous measurement, analysis, and display of reconstructed results, will find wide application in other aquatic bioassays.Seasonally distribution and source apportionment of Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in the road dust (RD) with the four size fraction sizes ( less then 45 μm, 45-63 μm, 63-150 μm and all sizes) in a typical industrial district were investigated using a combination of Moran index, Principal component analysis (PCA), and Positive matrix factorization (PMF). Results showed that from winter to summer, the proportion of the less then 45 μm fraction dust in the total RD mass increased from 6.72% to 15.92% and that of 63-150 μm dust particles decreased from 31.13% to 21.76%. The proportion of the enrichment factors (EF) at moderate pollution level in winter was higher than that in summer, especially for Cu, Cd and Pb. Further, the heavy metals were relatively enriched in particles 63-150 μm in summer, while in particles less then 45 μm in winter. Spatially, the distribution of heavy metal concentrations was more concentrated in the winter and showed low levels of regional diffusion. Based on the pollution mapping and PCA-PMF, the integrated source appointment showed that the industrial sources are the main sources of Zn, Cd and Pb, and their contributions are higher at a particle below 45 μm in winter.
