Subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) is an effective treatment for allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. However, adverse events, including life-threatening systemic reactions, may occur. The purpose of this project is to identify risk factors for systemic reactions to SCIT and to provide practice-based solutions using a quality improvement (QI) framework.

A QI initiative was performed in a hospital-based, Canadian Allergy clinic administering SCIT in a 12-month period.

A total of 4242 injections of SCIT were performed over a period of 12months. Of these, 10 injections resulted in a systemic reaction requiring epinephrine administration (i.e., an incidence of 1 in 424 injections, or 0.24%). Eight patients had at least one documented risk factor for a systemic reaction, and six had multiple risk factors. Major risk factors included seasonal exacerbation of allergic rhinitis, uncontrolled asthma, and an error in route of administration. All reactions occurred with the highest allergen extract concentration.

This study aims to investigate the efficacy of curcumin-piperine co-supplementation on oxidative stress factors, clinical symptoms, and mortality rate in patients with coronavirus (COVID-19) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).

This study is a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-arm clinical trial.

The study participants will be recruited from patients admitted to the ICU of Al-Zahra hospital with a definitive diagnosis of COVID-19. The inclusion criteria are aged between 20 and 75 years, confirmation of COVID-19 based on the PCR test, and admitted to the ICU. The exclusion criteria include the present use of parenteral nutrition support, a history of underlying diseases such as congenital disorders, immune diseases, renal and hepatic insufficiency, and pancreatitis, a history of sensitivity to herbal remedies such as turmeric and pepper, and regular use of anticoagulant drugs such as warfarin. This study will be performed in the Al-Zahra hospital, an academic hospital affiliate, 2021.

Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHDS) is a rare, autosomal dominant, inherited disease caused by mutations in the folliculin gene (FLCN). The disease is characterised by skin lesions (fibrofolliculomas, trichodiscomas, acrochordons), pulmonary cysts with pneumothoraces and renal tumours. We present the features of Polish patients with BHDS.

The first case of BHDS in Poland was diagnosed in 2016. Since then, 15 cases from 10 families have been identified. Thirteen patients were confirmed via direct FLCN sequencing, and two according to their characteristic clinical and radiological presentations.

BHDS was diagnosed in 15 cases (13 women and 2 men) from 10 families. The mean ages at the time of first pneumothorax and diagnosis were 38.4 ± 13.9 and 47.7 ± 13years, respectively. Five patients (33%) were ex-smokers (2.1 ± 1.37 packyears), and 10 (67%) had never smoked cigarettes. Twelve patients (83%) had a history of recurrent symptomatic pneumothorax. click here Three patients had small, asymptomatic pneumothoraces, which wocated in exon 6 were detected, and two novel FLCN gene mutations were identified.
The Unilateral Seated Shot-Put Test (USSPT) consists of pushing an overweight ball as far as possible to assess upper extremity power unilaterally and bilateral symmetry. Literature however reports various body positions and upper limb pushing patterns to perform USSPT, demanding to provide additional guideline to achieve overweight ball push. This study therefore aimed at assessing the reliability and agreement of USSPT outcome measures when pushing an overweight ball in a horizontal direction.

Twenty-seven healthy male athletes performed two sessions, one week apart, of three unilateral pushes per upper limb using a 3-kg medicine ball, for which the distances were measured. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), minimum detectable change at a 95 % confidence level (MDC
) and coefficient of variation (CV) were assessed for the pushing distances based on one, two or three trials per side to produce two outcome measures the pushing distance per limb and USSPT Limb Symmetry Index (LSI) when dividing pushing distance of the dominant side by that of the non-dominant side.

The most reliable pushing distance per limb was obtained when averaging three pushing distances, normalized by body mass with the exponent 0.35. The mean USSPT LSI was 1.09 ± 0.10 for the first session and 1.08 ± 0.10 for the second session, highlighting good reliability and agreement (ICC = 0.82; SEM = 0.045; MDC
= 0.124; CV = 5.02 %).

Triatomine control campaigns have traditionally consisted of spraying the inside of houses with pyrethroid insecticides. However, exposure to sublethal insecticide doses after the initial application is a common occurrence and may have phenotypic consequences for survivors. Here, using Triatoma infestans (the main vector of Chagas disease in the Southern Cone of South America) as a model species, we quantified the effects of exposure to a sublethal dose of pyrethroid insecticide on wing morphology. We tested if the treatment (i) induced a plastic effect (change in the character mean); (ii) altered environmental canalisation (higher individual variation within genotypes); (iii) altered genetic canalisation (higher variation among genotypes); and (iv) altered developmental stability (higher fluctuating asymmetry [FA]).
