Kin selection may act differently on genes inherited from parents (matrigenes and patrigenes), resulting in intragenomic conflict. This conflict can be observed as differential expression of matrigenes and patrigenes, or parent-specific gene expression (PSGE). In honey bees (Apis mellifera), intragenomic conflict is hypothesized to occur in multiple social contexts. Previously, we found that patrigene-biased expression in reproductive tissues was associated with increased reproductive potential in worker honey bees, consistent with the prediction that patrigenes are selected to promote selfish behaviour in this context. Here, we examined brain gene expression patterns to determine if PSGE is also found in other tissues. As before, the number of transcripts showing patrigene expression bias was significantly greater in the brains of reproductive vs. sterile workers, while the number of matrigene-biased transcripts was not significantly different. Twelve transcripts out of the 374 showing PSGE in either tissue showed PSGE in both brain and reproductive tissues; this overlap was significantly greater than expected by chance. However, the majority of transcripts show PSGE only in one tissue, suggesting the epigenetic mechanisms mediating PSGE exhibit plasticity between tissues. There was no significant overlap between transcripts that showed PSGE and transcripts that were significantly differentially expressed. Weighted gene correlation network analysis identified modules which were significantly enriched in both types of transcripts, suggesting that these genes may influence each other through gene networks. Our results provide further support for the kin selection theory of intragenomic conflict, and provide valuable insights into the mechanisms which may mediate this process. The behavior of the redox-active aminotroponiminate (ATI) ligand in the coordination sphere of bismuth has been investigated in neutral and cationic compounds, [Bi(ATI)3 ] and [Bi(ATI)2 Ln ][A] (L=neutral ligand; n=0, 1; A=counteranion). Their coordination chemistry in solution and in the solid state has been analyzed through (variable-temperature) NMR spectroscopy, line-shape analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and their Lewis acidity has been evaluated by using the Gutmann-Beckett method (and modifications thereof). Cyclic voltammetry, in combination with DFT calculations, indicates that switching between ligand- and metal-centered redox events is possible by altering the charge of the compounds from 0 in neutral species to +1 in cationic compounds. This adds important facets to the rich redox chemistry of ATIs and to the redox chemistry of bismuth compounds, which is, so far, largely unexplored. This article presents results from interviews with twelve persons with mild dementia about how life had changed since they received their diagnosis, exploring their experiences of dementia and how they manage life by using different strategies and techniques. Apatinib VEGFR inhibitor Knowledge about how people with mild dementia experience life is important to explore through their unique perspective, providing clinical practice with knowledge to improve dementia care. Twelve participants were recruited at a Danish school service for people with mild dementia where they receive cognitive stimulation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, video recorded, transcribed and analysed by using Max Van Manen's five lifeworld existentials spatiality, corporeality, temporality, relationality and materiality. SRQR checklist was used. Five themes were identified, illustrating the dilemmas and challenges the participants experience, as all existentials are compromised in some way living a social and active life regardless of difficulties; trying to look at the bright side of life with dementia; it takes time to adapt but at the same time, time is being lost; it is possible to learn, but it is challenging; to try to remember but keep forgetting. The article concludes that all existentials are negatively influenced by dementia, setting the lifeworld of the participants under pressure. However, they still try to live their lives regardless of the difficulties. The study shows it is possible for people with mild dementia to describe their lived experience of dementia and what strategies and techniques they use to manage life. The experienced dilemmas and challenges in the lifeworld of people with mild dementia are of great relevance to be aware of and address in clinical practice. To support people with dementia to identify relevant strategies and techniques, as expressed in the study, that can support them managing life with dementia.
This study aims to investigate the efficacy of transcutaneous tibial nerve home stimulation for overactive bladder (OAB) in women with Parkinson's disease (PD).
The current study is a prospective, randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial. Home intervention was carried out andassessments were conducted at a tertiary hospital in South Brazil. Women with PD and OAB symptoms were included in the study. Patients were randomly divided into two groups (1) stimulation and (2) sham. Both groups underwent intervention at home for 12 weeks. Patients were evaluated at baseline and at 12 weeks (end of intervention),30- and 90-day follow-up. The primary outcome was the mean reduction in the number ofurgency incontinence episodes, and secondary outcomes included daytime and nighttime urinary frequency, urinary urgency episodes, use of pad (reported in a 24-h bladder diary), OAB-V8 andKing's Health Questionnaire scores, and maintenanceof symptom relief after discontinuation of the intervention.
In total, 30 cons and the resulting relief seems to persist in the follow-up (30 and 90 days).
Kawasaki disease (KD) is a significant febrile illness in children and is the leading cause of acquired pediatric heart disease in developed countries. Its recommended treatment is high-dose intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) plus aspirin. However, IVIG-related adverse events are seen frequently in this population. Premedication is commonly used to reduce this risk, but evidence supporting this practice is conflicting. Ultimately, practices vary among institutions and no standard guidelines regarding IVIG premedication currently exist.
Electronic medical records for pediatric patients presenting to an academic, tertiary care medical center diagnosed with KD and who received at least one dose of IVIG were reviewed for patient demographics, treatment characteristics, premedication use, adverse events, and coronary abnormalities at discharge. Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate study findings.
Sixty-six patients receiving a total of 81 distinct IVIG administrations were evaluated. Most patients (64/66, 97%) were premedicated prior to infusion with 26% of patients (17/66) experiencing an IVIG-related adverse event, totaling 25 documented adverse events.
