Entomopathogenic fungi are regarded as effective biocontrol agents in pest management. Different fungi isolates exhibit varying degree of pathogenicity against red palm weevil [Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier)]. The pathogenicity of four native isolate from Saudi Arabia (three Beauveria bassiana named as BbSA-1, BbSA-2, BbSA-3 and one Metarhizium anisopliae regarded as MaSA-1) and three exotic isolates from Indonesia (B. bassiana coded as BbIDN-1 and M. anisopliae named as MaIDN-1 and MaIDN-2) was evaluated against red palm weevil under laboratory conditions. The isolates were applied to eggs (1 day old), larvae (3 and 35 days old), pupae (5 days old) and adults (10 days old). The average mortality rate of eggs and hatched larvae was 100% in all of the isolates except BbSA-2 and BbIDN-1, where mortality was 93.3 and 90%, respectively. learn more The lowest mortality rate (73.3%) was recorded for BbSA-3 against 3-days-old larvae; however, all other isolates caused >80% larval mortality. Meanwhile, 93.3% mortality of 35-day-old larvae was noted for MaSA-1 isolate. The highest pupa mortality (80%) was observed for MaSA-1, while remaining isolates caused >60% mortality. The isolates BbSA-1 and MaSA-1 caused 61 and 74.3% mortality in adults, respectively. The tested fungi isolates exhibited high virulence against all life stages of red palm weevil. Local isolates had higher pathogenicity than exotic isolates. The findings of the current study suggest that entomopathogenic fungi could be used as biological control agents for the management of red palm weevil. However, field studies are needed to reach the sound conclusions and practical applications.Torsional malalignment was detected in subjects with medial knee osteoarthritis (KOA) but few studies have reported the effect of torsional deformity on knee joint loads during walking. Therefore, this study examined the relationships between lower limb torsional alignments and knee joint loads during gait in people with symptomatic medial KOA using cross-sectional study design. Lower limb alignments including tibial torsion, tibiofemoral rotation and varus/valgus alignments in standing were measured by EOS low-dose bi-planar x-ray system in 47 subjects with mild or moderate KOA. The external knee adduction moment (KAM), flexion moment (KFM) and the KAM index which was defined as (KAM/ (KAM+KFM)*100) during walking were analyzed using a motion analysis system so as to estimate the knee loads. Results revealed externaltibial torsion was positively associated with KAM in subjects with moderate KOA (r = 0.59, p = 0.02) but not in subjects with mild KOA. On the contrary, significant association was found between knee varus/valgus alignment and KAM in the mild KOA group (r = 0.58, p less then 0.001) and a sign of association in the moderate KOA group (r = 0.47, p = 0.08). We concluded tibial torsion and knee varus/valgus mal-alignments would be associated with joint loading in subjects with moderate medial KOA during walking. Radiographic severity might need to be considered when using gait modification as a rehabilitation strategy for this condition.
During the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic there was an urgent need for accelerated review of COVID-19 research by Medical Research Ethics Committees (MRECs). In the Netherlands this led to the implementation of so-called 'fast-track-review-procedures' (FTRPs) to enable a swift start of urgent and relevant research. The objective of this study is to evaluate FTRPs of MRECs in the Netherlands during the COVID-19 pandemic and to compare them with the regular review procedures (RRPs).

An explanatory sequential mixed method study was conducted. Online questionnaires and four group interviews were conducted among MREC representatives and investigators of COVID-19 research. In addition, data from a national research registration system was requested. Main outcome measures are differences in timelines, quality of the review and satisfaction between FTRPs and RRPs. The total number of review days was shorter in FTRP (median 10.5) compared to RRPs (median 98.0). Review days attributable to the MRECs also declinational collaboration and coordination are important.
This study shows that accelerated review is feasible during emergency situations. We did not find evidence that review quality was compromised and both investigators and MRECs were content with the FTRP. To improve future medical ethical review during pandemic situations and beyond, distinguishing main and side issues, working digitally, and (inter)national collaboration and coordination are important.Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by the presence of insulin resistance, and women with PCOS have high prevalence of gestational diabetes (GDM). Both conditions have been associated with increased risk for pregnancy complications such as preterm birth, preeclampsia and increased offspring birth weight. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of GDM in women with PCOS using both previous and new diagnostic criteria, and to analyse whether the risk of pregnancy complications increased with the presence of GDM. In addition, we aimed to assess the response to metformin treatment in PCOS women with GDM. We performed post-hoc analysis of three prospective, double blinded studies of altogether 791 pregnant women with PCOS randomized to either metformin or placebo treatment from first trimester to delivery. Glucose data allowing GDM classification after previous (WHO 1999) and new (WHO 2013 and Norwegian 2017) diagnostic criteria were available for 722 of the women. Complications such as preeclampsia, late miscarriage and preterm birth, birth weight and gestational age were correlated to the presence of GDM and metformin treatment. The prevalence of GDM was 28.3% (WHO 1999), 41.2% (WHO 2013) and 27.2% (Norwegian 2017). Having GDM already in first trimester associated with increased risk for late miscarriage (p less then 0.01). Having GDM according to newer criteria correlated to increased maternal age and BMI (p less then 0.001). Otherwise, having GDM (any criteria) correlated neither to the development of preeclampsia, nor to birth weight z-score or the proportion of offspring being large for gestational weight. Maternal age and BMI, parity and gestational weight gain, but not GDM or metformin treatment, were determinants for birth weight z-score. Conclusion in pregnant women with PCOS, having GDM did not increase the risk for other pregnancy complications except for an increased risk for late miscarriage among those with GDM already in the first trimester.
