Toxascaris leonina is a polyxenical parasite and commonly found in canids and felids. In this study, we used the Illumina high throughput sequencing and assembly to determine the complete mitogenome of a representative of this parasite from the Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica). The genome was 14,248 bp in size and encoded 12 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and two ribosomal RNAs. Phylogeny showed that two canid (dog)-originated T. leonina were phylogenetically distinct from two felid-originated T. leonina (tiger isolate and cheetah isolate), suggesting at least two distinct subclades of T. leonina infecting these hosts and supporting once again that T. leonina represents a species complex. Furthermore, four isolates of T. leonina grouped together and were more closely related to other species from the family Ascarididae than species of families Toxocaridae, Anisakidae and Ascaridiidae, demonstrating phylogenetic stability of these paraphyletic groups characterized in this study. These cumulative mitochondrial DNA data provide a better understanding of phylogenetic relationships of this polyxenical and zoonotic roundworm species.Job's tears, also known as adlay, is a valuable plant that has commonly been used in traditional Chinese medicine, as well as an edible food. Due to the lack of knowledge of its genetics and gaps in its evolutionary analysis, breeding of adlay has been hindered. Here, we report five complete chloroplast genomes of various species and varieties in the genus by Illumina sequencing, while their genome structure, comparative analysis, and phylogenetic relationships were conducted. PF06700841 Genome sizes ranged from 140,860 to 140,864 bp in length, GC contents were 38.43%, and genome architecture was of a typical quadripartite structure. We annotated 82~83 protein-coding genes and 46~47 non-coding RNA genes in each genome and they functionally associated with self-replication, photosynthesis, cytochrome synthesis and other unknown functions. Three codons that encoded tryptophan, arginine and leucine were used frequently at rates of 41.42, 37.98, and 32.28% respectively. The preferred codons consistently ended with A or T. A total of 146 simple sequence repeats (SSR), 9 insertions and deletions (InDels) and 143 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were observed among genomes. The InDel and SNP variations were mostly distributed in intergenic regions. It confirmed that Coix, Sorghum, Saccharum, Zea, Tripsacum and Saccharum were closely genera and the genetic distance of Sorghum to Coix was closer than Zea to Coix. These results give us more insight into the evolution of Coix in a wide range of evolutionary studies.Styrax wuyuanensis S. M. Hwang is an endemic species distributed in China. In this study, we characterized its complete chloroplast genome. The circular genome of S. wuyuanensis is 157,969 bp in length, and includes two inverted repeat (IRa and IRb) regions of 25,954 bp in length separated by a large single copy (LSC) region of 87,575 bp and a small single copy (SSC) region of 18,486 bp. The total GC content of the S. wuyuanensis chloroplast genome is 37.0%, and a total of 132 functional genes are encoded, including 87 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA, and eight rRNA. The phylogenetic analysis has shown that S. wuyuanensis is positioned in the Styracaceae clade, as a sister taxon to S. faberi and S. fortunei, confirming the close relationship of S. wuyuanensis with the latter two species.In this study, we assembled the complete mitochondrial genome of Yanglong yak (Bos grunniens) from Illumina sequencing reads. The mitochondrial genome is 16,323 bp long with an A + T-biased nucleotide composition, and encodes 13 protein-coding, 22 tRNA, and two rRNA genes along with a noncoding control region. In addition, its gene order is identical to those of the previously published mitochondrial genomes of its congeners. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that this breed is closely related to Datong yak, Pamir yak, Tianjun yak, polled yak, Seron yak, Sunnan yak, a series of Domestic Yak and wild yak, followed by Jinchuan yak and Gannan yak, and slightly far away from Bison and Bos taurus.Donkey croaker, Pennahia anea (Bloch, 1793) is a commercially important croaker in the Indo-Pacific region. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed the mitogenome of P. anea. The nearly complete mitochondrial genome of P. anea is 15,694 bp in size. It contained 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes. The sequence had the A-T content of 55.4% and GC content of 44.6%. All 13 PCGs used ATG codon for initiation, while TAA codon was the most common for termination. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that P. anea is located within the genus Pennahia. This study provides additional data for the understanding of the phylogeny of the family Sciaenidae.
Service learning integrates community service, didactic and student self-reflection while at the same time striving to identify and meet needs of the community partnership agencies involved. Project Descriptions. In this manuscript, two baccalaureate nursing students describe their service learning experiences while embedded in an integrated primary care community partner site for two years. In project one, students designed and conducted an educational group for mental health clients in a rural day treatment program. In project two, the student revised a diabetic clinic educational form to reduce client burden.Project management and outcomes Projects were designed in collaboration with community partners and faculty. Project one resulted in increased knowledge of coping mechanisms in a majority of group participants. Three months after implementation of the revised form designed in project two, a majority of diabetic clients served in the clinic had A1c reductions.
Lessons learned by students during the experiences include communication skills such as developing rapport with specific client groups, steps of change management, professional team interactions and increased civic engagement.
To our knowledge, this is the first manuscript wherein baccalaureate nursing students add their voice to the literature describing the benefits of academic service learning. Our next step is an online follow up 9 months post-graduation, to examine whether benefits and skills are maintained.
