Emotional intelligence (EI) includes skills such as recognizing, understanding, and managing emotions. This pilot study investigated the utility of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test Version 2.0 as a screening instrument in student registered nurse anesthetists by determining if EI predicted clinical performance. Scores from 11 participants enrolled in a single nurse anesthesia program were correlated with formative clinical evaluations. Relationships between EI and clinical performance were examined. Participants consistently met clinical performance objectives but were unable to use emotion to solve problems or to recognize others' emotions, suggesting that EI abilities could impact future student registered nurse anesthetist clinical performance.Hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery is considered to provide the benefits of laparoscopic surgery in various diseases. However, limited information is available regarding the feasibility of hand-assisted laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (HALDG)-a subset of hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery-as a gastric cancer treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of HALDG compared with laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG). Consecutive patients who underwent HALDG (n=58) or LADG (n=90) for stage I gastric cancer between 2005 and 2016 were eligible. Operative time was significantly shorter and blood loss was significantly higher in HALDG than in LADG (P less then 0.001, both). Postoperative aminotransferase levels were significantly lower in HALDG than in LADG (P less then 0.001). There was no significant difference in perioperative complications, a number of analgesics, postoperative C-reactive protein levels, and 3-year relapse-free and overall survival rates between the groups. This study suggests that HALDG is a safe and feasible approach and could become an effective option for stage I gastric cancer treatment.INTRODUCTION The report summarizes the intraoperative rescue and nursing intervention of malignant hyperthermia (MH) in the correction surgery for 3 patients with spinal deformity. Although rare, MH may occur in up to 1 of 5000 cases. We evaluated the outcomes and indications for transforaminal cervical epidural steroid injection (TCESI) in patients with moderate to severe disability.We prospectively gathered data from patients with 1 or 2-level cervical degenerative disease (herniated disc, foraminal stenosis) with moderate to severe disability (3.5 less then initial visual analog scale less then 6.5, 15 less then Neck Disability Index less then 35) and greater than 12 weeks of pain, despite conservative treatment. Patients with persistent disability and those who desired surgical intervention underwent decompression surgery. The clinical and demographic characteristics were compared between groups.Of the 309 patients who underwent TCESI, 221 (72%) did not receive surgical treatment during the 1-year follow-up period. The remaining 88 patients (28%) underwent surgery at a mean of 4.1 months after initial TCESI. Patients who underwent injection alone showed a significant decrease in disability and pain that persisted until the 1-year follow-up visit (P less then .05). In patients who underwent surgery, the mean disability and pain scores after injection did not decrease for several months, although the scores significantly decreased up to 1 year after surgery (P less then .05).The TCESI significantly decreased pain and disability in the moderate to severe disability group up to 1 year after injection. We recommend cervical TCESI as an initial treatment with moderate to severe disability patients.RATIONALE A spontaneous rupture of the bladder diverticulum in an adult patient is extremely rare. The recommended treatment is surgery. However, some cases can be successfully treated with urinary catheterization, antibiotics, and/or percutaneous peritoneal drainage. In this case report, a spontaneous rupture of the bladder diverticulum was successfully treated non-surgically because it was deemed too risky for surgical intervention, such as non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). selleckchem PATIENT CONCERNS A 76-year-old man presented with abdominal pain, distention, diarrhea, and oliguria for 3 days and hypotension for 1 day with no history of trauma. The patient showed direct and rebound tenderness in the lower abdomen. Computed tomography revealed an intraperitoneal bladder rupture associated with the bladder diverticula. Electrocardiography, echocardiography, and elevated cardiac enzyme suggested NSTEMI. DIAGNOSES A spontaneous rupture of the bladder diverticulum, NSTEMI, and suspected sepsis due to gastroenteritis or urinary infection. INTERVENTIONS The patient was treated conservatively with urinary catheterization and antibiotics for a bladder rupture and an infection. Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty was performed for NSTEMI. OUTCOMES The patient fully recovered without complications on hospitalization day 13. LESSONS Conservative management might be an alternative for a spontaneous intraperitoneal bladder rupture in some cases. However, close observation is required, and surgical intervention is the first option for a spontaneous intraperitoneal rupture of the bladder diverticulum.Primary tumor resection (PTR) for unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients has been documented to be associated with postoperative hyper-neovascularization and enhanced growth of metastases, which may be prevented by bevacizumab. This study aimed to investigate the survival outcome of PTR in patients who received palliative bevacizumab-containing chemotherapy (BCT).From January 2006 to December 2018, medical records of 240 mCRC patients who received palliative BCT at a single tertiary colorectal cancer center were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were classified into three groups PTR-a (PTR before BCT, n = 60), PTR-b (PTR during BCT, n = 17), and BCT-only group (n = 163).
