Do-It-Yourself Double Glazing Repairs
Double glazing can keep a building warm, but it may be prone to problems as time passes. Leaking, broken glass or foggy windows are all problems that could lead to energy loss, costly repairs and health problems.
FENSA certified installers are able to help you maintain or repair your double glazing in order to be energy efficient and meet the requirements of legal compliance and resale value.
Broken Panes
A broken window can cause a lot of issues, since it could block light, air and even insects. You can hire an expert to fix the broken pane but you can also do it yourself for a fraction of what a professional would charge.
You will need to remove the old window. Start by putting on safety glasses, work gloves and dust masks to shield yourself from lead shards and glass dust. Establish a stable work surface that is ventilated in an area. It is also recommended to place a drop cloth under the work area to catch any loose glass that is being removed. Keep a HEPA vacuum near you to get rid of dust debris, debris, and hazardous waste while you work.
Once the old window has been removed, use a utility knife to scrape away the old glazing putty. Be careful not to damage the wooden frame of the window. If the old putty is having difficulty coming off then you can try using a heat gun first to soften it. Wear safety goggles and be careful to avoid getting hot glass or wood fragments in your eyes when using a heat gun.
Then, you can make the frame ready to receive the new pane. Take measurements of the opening and subtract 1/16 inch in both directions to account for expansion and contraction of the wood. Then, have your local hardware store cut a piece of double-strength plastic that fits the opening precisely. Before installing the new glass dry-fit it to ensure an ideal fit.
Once you have the new glass in place, lay a tiny amount of latex caulk around the perimeter of the opening for an excellent weather seal. Then, you can install the glazing points to keep the new pane in the proper position. For standard sizes of window glass, you will only need to install two points per edge.
Once the new compound is dry you can then paint it to match the rest. If repairmywindowsanddoors are worried about cracks that could occur, you can use a strong masking tape to stop cracks on the surface from getting worse.
Damaged Frames
It is recommended to inspect the frame first. You will need to have it repaired professionally in the event of cracks, corrosion or rust, or if the frame appears to be broken into two pieces. Metal frames cannot be joined and any attempts to weld or solder them will cause permanent damage.
If the frame is not damaged, you may use a small brush and some conservation detergent or water to clean the frame carefully. This will eliminate any dust, grease or dirt that has accumulated over time. Cleaning antique frames with ornate carvings or gesso may reveal the original finish underneath the dust.
If the frame is damaged, you will need needle-nose pliers, a flat surface, wood putty, sandpaper as well as a small clamp. Remove the back, the photo and the glass of the frame. Take care to break the frame at the corners, where you can see brads or nails. Unlock the joints and remove any glue that is old. Apply new glue.
Loose Compound
The glazing compound that holds the glass panes within their wooden frames is an essential part of the energy efficiency of any historic building. It is a sealant for the wood, it binds the glass to the frame, and sheds moisture to avoid water damage in the course of time. Cracks or gaps in this compound can cause air infiltration, which decreases the insulation value and can increase utility bills. Keep up with the repair work on your double-glazed window to ensure they are operating smoothly.
If you see drafts at the edges of your window frames, the weatherstripping seal may be worn or loose. This seal could reduce energy costs and increase the comfort of your home. If you hear loud noises outside, such as traffic or machinery, this could indicate that the glass tape has worn out.
Remove the old tape from the frame's edge and clean the area thoroughly. Apply a new piece tape to the frame's edge and press it down firmly. You can purchase this at any hardware store, and it's a cheap option to boost the performance of double-glazed windows.
Super glues that are standard are great for metal, wood and other common materials. However they're not the best choice for glass surfaces. Look for a glass-based adhesive, such as Loctite Extreme Glue Gel. This type of adhesive is designed to resist UV and moisture light making it a great alternative for fixing double-glazed windows.
Before you start repairing your windows, you'll want to clean the the frame and sash using a degreaser to ensure the new glue sticks properly. Then prepare the area that will be coated by priming it with an oil-based primer. Prime the entire area including the back of sash, in the place it is placed within the frame.
You can repair most double-glazed window issues however, if the windows are severely damaged or do not provide enough insulation, replacement may be your best option. Get a professional glazier or handyperson to make the right decision. Regular inspection and repair of your windows will ensure they look their best and function smoothly for many years to come.
Foggy Panes
Foggy windows happen when the window seal fails, allowing air to penetrate between the glass panes and slowly build up moisture. Foggy windows can lead to many problems, from condensation and calcium deposits to black staining and fungus. In addition to looking ugly and causing a decrease in energy efficiency and higher heating or cooling costs. However, it is possible to correct the issue. Foggy windows are usually caused by simple moisture buildup, so the first step is to eliminate as much moisture as you can. This can be accomplished by spraying a defogging agent or by applying shaving cream. If none of these methods work, it's time to contact an expert.
The reason double pane windows work is because they have a space between them. This space is filled argon, or krypton. These non-toxic gasses are much more dense than air and slow heat transfer. If the gas has leaked out, your windows aren't adequately insulated. The replacement of your windows with new IGUs will not only fix the fogging, but also improve your home's energy efficiency too.
Many homeowners believe that they need to replace their entire window if it starts to get foggy, however this isn't always the case. Some glass shops offer to replace the insulating unit (IGU) only, and without replacing the entire frame or sash. This is a less expensive option that's equally effective in fixing your windows.
Although there are a few DIY solutions for window condensation, like defogging spray or shaving cream, it is best to consult a professional ensure the job is done correctly and safely. A window repair specialist will drill holes in the glass and then inject cleaning solutions into the space between the panes. They will then scrub the soiled surface and dry the interior of the window, restoring its appearance and functionality. To find out more about this process, or to schedule a no pressure in-home consultation, contact an expert in your area for window replacement and repairs.
