A global-scale atmospheric chemistry model, GEOS-Chem, was used to simulate air concentrations of BaP, a representative PAH congener primarily emitted from biomass burning, and to quantify the response of BaP to wildfires in the northern boreal forest. The results showed that BaP emissions from wildfires across the northern boreal forest region played a significant role in the contamination and interannual fluctuations of BaP in Arctic air. A source-tagging technique was applied in tracking the origins of BaP pollution from different northern boreal forest regions. We also show that the response of BaP pollution at different Arctic monitoring sites depends on the intensity of human activities. BACKGROUND Compared to hospital admissions (HAs), emergency ambulance dispatches (EADs) can be considered a real-time outcome for evaluating the public health impacts of ambient temperature. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess if temperature has a causal effect on cause-specific EADs and its potential main and added effect in Shenzhen from 2013 to 2017. METHODS A distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) with quasi-Poisson distribution was applied to quantify the association between temperature and EADs. Likewise, the fraction of EADs attributable to different temperature ranges was calculated to identify extreme temperature ranges affecting population health. We then explored the main and added wave effects of heatwaves. RESULTS Ambient temperature showed a U-shaped association with EADs. The minimum risk temperature was 17 °C (16th percentile of the daily mean temperature). Compared with the cold, the relative risk (RR) of heat on EADs presented smaller but the attributable risk larger. The main effects of heatwaves on EADs varied with external causes; and the peak RR of heat on EADs was observed in suicidal behaviors with heatwaves defined as 3 or more days with temperatures above the 75th percentile (RR = 4.53, 95% CI 1.23-16.68), followed by assault (RR = 2.36, 95% CI 1.25-4.48) and accidents (RR = 1.72, 95% CI 1.30-2.28), while the added wave effect was negligible. CONCLUSIONS Heat was responsible for a higher proportion of EADs than cold. Most of the increase in health risk during warm season can be simply ascribed to the independent effects of daily temperature occurrences whether it is or not on the heat-wave day. And the main effects of heatwaves on cause-specific EADs showed varied change trends, of which the incidence of suicides seems more susceptible, followed by assault and accidents. Opioids have been used to treat pain and invoke pleasure for centuries. Modern scientific advancements have led to more potent, synthetic opioids. While certainly more effective in treating pain, they can also be much more addictive. Over the years the scientific community has developed a clearer understanding of the role opioid receptors play in causing and treating opioid use disorders (OUD) and we now know that OUD can develop in individuals taking opioids for "legitimate" pain. Current guidelines suggest that all prescribers (especially those prescribing opioids) be capable treating OUD. Pharmacological advances have led to a wide array of safe and effective treatment options to address OUDs. This paper will discuss the history of opioid development, what is known about the transition from analgesic uses to addiction and modern evidenced based treatment strategies to address OUDs. Aromatics find a range of applications in the chemical, food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. While production of aromatics on the current market heavily relies on petroleum-derived chemical processes or direct extraction from plants, there is an increasing demand for establishing new renewable and sustainable sources of aromatics. To this end, microbial cell factories-mediated bioproduction using abundant feedstocks comprises a highly promising alternative to aromatics production. In this review, we provide the recent development of de novo biosynthesis of aromatics derived from the shikimate pathway in yeasts, including the model Saccharomyces cerevisiae as well as other non-conventional species. Moreover, we discuss how evolved metabolic engineering tools and strategies contribute to the construction and optimization of aromatics cell factories. The study highlights the investigation of the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in traditionally smoked meat products and charcoal grilled meat. Specifically, the levels of benzo(a)anthracene (BaA), chrysene (Chr), benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF) and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) were determined for 262 samples of smoked sausage, bacon, pork (lountza) and ham (chiromeri), grilled pork and poultry produced in Cyprus. The method is based on a saponification and liquid extraction step, followed by solid phase extraction (SPE) cleanup of the extract and finally, the determination of PAHs using high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detector. Most of the samples analysed (96%) were contaminated with at least one PAH. In these contaminated samples, 12% of the smoked products and 15% of the grilled meat samples exceeded the maximum levels of the EU legislation. The highest PAH concentrations were found in samples with higher fat content and longer smoking or cooking time. The dissemination of falsified medicines is a public health risk. DNA Damage inhibitor Techniques such as attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy are commonly adopted for fraudulent drug detection. However, the spectrum generated by the ATR-FTIR typically results in hundreds of wavenumbers, reducing the performance of classification methods aimed at discriminating between authentic and falsified medicines. This article proposes a novel method for selecting a reduced size subset of wavenumbers that improves the classifier performance. The singular value decomposition SVD is used to generate a wavenumber importance index. An iterative process creates k-nearest neighbor (KNN) models by adding the wavenumbers in a decreasing order according to the importance index. Wavenumbers that increase classification accuracy are selected. When applied to Cialis® ATR-FTIR data, the proposed approach retained average 0.51% of the original wavenumbers with 100% accurate classifications; as for the Viagra® data set, the method yielded perfect classifications retaining average 0.
