escents may be an effective way to strengthen adolescent self-protection, reduce risky alcohol use and related negative consequences.Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a chronic and relapsing disease characterized by craving, loss of control, tolerance and physical dependence. At present, the combination of pharmacotherapy and psychosocial intervention is the most effective management strategy in preventing relapse to reduce dropout rates and promote abstinence in SUD patients. However, only few effective medications are available. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that modulates the cellular activity of the cerebral cortex through a magnetic pulse applied on selected brain areas. Recently, the efficacy of TMS has been investigated in various categories of SUD patients. The present review analyzes the application of repetitive TMS in patients with alcohol, tobacco, and cocaine use disorder. Although the number of clinical studies is still limited, repetitive TMS yields encouraging results in these patients, suggesting a possible role of TMS in the treatment of SUD.
The current study examined the developmental interrelationships between alcohol and marijuana use trajectories from ages 10 to 18 years in a sample of North American Indigenous adolescents. Distinct co-use groups were formed to create profiles of young adult outcomes.

Dual group-based trajectory models of marijuana and alcohol frequency were estimated using data from a longitudinal community-based participatory study of Indigenous adolescents from the upper Midwest and Canada. Joint probabilities were used to create co-use groups, and profiles were created using early adult (Mean Age - 26.28 years) outcomes.

Four joint trajectory groups were identified 1) no marijuana and no/low alcohol use (34.4%), 2) mid-onset alcohol only (14%), 3) mid-onset co-use starting at age 13 (24%), and 4) early-onset co-use starting at age 11 (22%). High probabilities existed that adolescents would use marijuana early if they began drinking alcohol at the youngest ages, and that adolescents would not use marijuana if they drank infrequently or delayed drinking until mid-adolescence. Adult outcomes were poorer for the early- and mid-onset co-use groups, but there were few differences between the no/low use and alcohol-only groups.

Co-use of marijuana and alcohol was associated with poorer outcomes in early adulthood, particularly for the group with an earlier age of onset. Abstaining from either substance in adolescence was associated with better outcomes.

Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use among adolescents is associated with increased risk of subsequent cigarette smoking initiation in observational research. Kynurenic acid mouse However, the existing research was not designed to answer causal questions about whether adolescent e-cigarette users would have initiated cigarette smoking if they had never used e-cigarettes. The current study used a causal inference framework to identify whether male adolescent e-cigarette users were at increased risk of initiating cigarette smoking and smokeless tobacco (SLT) use, compared to similar boys who had never used e-cigarettes.

Boys from urban and Appalachian Ohio (N=1220; ages 11-16years at enrollment) reported use of e-cigarettes, cigarettes, and SLT at baseline and every six months for two years. A propensity score matching design was implemented, matching one e-cigarette user to two similar e-cigarette non-users. This analysis was completed in 25 multiple imputed datasets to account for missing data. Risk ratios (RRs) comparing risk of initiating cigarettes and SLT for e-cigarette users and nonusers were estimated.

Compared to non-users, e-cigarette users were more than twice as likely to later initiate both cigarette smoking (RR=2.71; 95% CI 1.89, 3.87) and SLT (RR=2.42; 95% CI 1.73, 3.38). They were also more likely to become current (i.e., past 30-day) cigarette smokers (RR=2.20; 95% CI 1.33, 3.64) and SLT users (RR=1.64; 95% CI 1.01, 2.64).

Adolescent boys who used e-cigarettes had increased risk of later initiating traditional tobacco products when compared to similar boys who had never used e-cigarettes.

Temperament characteristics are key elements for infants' development. The Infant Behavior Questionnaire - Revised (IBQ-R) is one of the most used measures to assess temperament in infants aged between 3 and 12months. Its reliability and factor structure have not yet been examined in infants younger than 3months.

To analyze the reliability of the IBQ-R at 2weeks and the IBQ-R factor structure from 2weeks to 12months of life.

A longitudinal repeated measures design was used. Three hundred mothers completed the IBQ-R when their infants were 2weeks, and 3, 6 and 12months.

At 2weeks the proportion of "non-applicable" responses was higher in duration of orienting, high intensity pleasure, approach and smiling and laughter scales. The Cronbach's alpha for the IBQ-R dimensions ranged between 0.62 and 0.63 and the McDonald's omega ranged between 0.67 and 0.80, all dimensions exhibited a mean-scale correlation above 0.15, and more than half of the scales revealed a scale-dimension correlation higher than 0.30. The same factor structure was found at 2weeks, and at 3, 6, and 12months surgency/extraversion, p<0.001, negative affectivity, p<0.001, and orienting regulation, p=0.007.

The IBQ-R may be applied in the first weeks of life and its factor structure remains stable when applied across different ages throughout infancy.

A hydrophobic segment centrally located in the Orai pore controls gating. Here, we comment on a recent work that describes decisive binding between three residues that controls the open and closed conformation of Orai channels.
