What is a driver's license?

A driver's license (DL) is an official document issued by a government agency that certifies the bearer's identity and legal authority to operate a motor vehicle on public roads. It usually shows the driver's name, date and place of birth, photograph, and address. Most states also require drivers to pass an exam written to prove their knowledge of driving rules and regulations. Driver's licenses also serve as a means of identification when traveling abroad, and the number on the back of the license is usually used to identify purposes by banks and other public authorities.

In the United States, driver's licenses are usually issued by a state's department for motor vehicles (DMV). They can be valid for a number of years based on the kind of license and the driver's age.
