PEEP 15 cmH2O; p = 0.31). However, both PaCO2 and Cstat worsened (PaCO2 72.5 ± 7.1 vs. 75.1 ± 9.0 mmHg; p less then 0.01. Cstat 17.5 ± 3.5 vs. 16.6 ± 3.9 ml/cmH2O; p = 0.05). Only four patients (20%) were considered lung recruitable. Individually titrated PEEP was higher than the baseline PEEP (8.0 ± 2.1 cmH2O vs. 5 cmH2O, p less then 0.001). After 18-20 h of prone positioning, investigated parameters were significantly improved compared to the baseline (PaO2 82.4 ± 15.5 mmHg. PaCO2 67.2 ± 6.4 mmHg. Cstat 20.6 ± 4.4 ml/cmH2O. All p less then 0.001 vs. baseline). Conclusions Lung recruitability was very low in COVID-19-associated severe ARDS. Individually titrated PEEP and prone positioning might improve lung mechanics and blood gasses. Background There is an increasing interest in acupuncture for promoting post-operative rehabilitation, but the effectiveness of acupuncture for rehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remains controversial. Objective This study aims to investigate the effect of acupuncture on rehabilitation after TKA. Methods Database searches of PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) were conducted to obtain articles published until August 2020. All identified articles were screened, and data from each included study were extracted independently by two investigators. Meta-analysis was performed to examine the effects of acupuncture on pain, range of knee motion, function, and nausea/vomiting after TKA. Results A total of nine randomized clinical trials were included according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria in this review. Compared with routine treatment, acupuncture combined with routine treatment showed a significantly greater pain reduction at 8, 12, 24, and 48 h post-operatively after TKA. Meanwhile, we found that the acupuncture groups showed a significant function improvement and a lower percentage of nausea/vomiting in comparison with the control groups after operation. However, acupuncture groups demonstrated no statistically significant improvement in post-operative pain at 4 h, 7 days, 14 days, and more than 21 days, and no significant difference in range of knee motion was observed between the acupuncture groups and control groups after surgery. Conclusions Acupuncture, as a supplementary treatment after TKA, could improve function and reduce nausea/vomiting. However, the effect of acupuncture on pain relief may be mainly achieved within post-operative 48 h, and it had no efficacy in improving range of knee motion. More large-scale and high-quality studies are warranted.Currently available treatments of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) remain limited despite improved understanding of DKD pathophysiology. The complement system is a central part of innate immunity, but its dysregulated activation is detrimental and results in systemic diseases with overt inflammation. Growing evidence suggests complement activation in DKD. With existent drugs and clinical success of treating other kidney diseases, complement inhibition has emerged as a potential novel therapy to halt the progression of DKD. This article will review DKD, the complement system's role in diabetic and non-diabetic disease, and the potential benefits of complement targeting therapies especially for DKD patients. Background As an emerging infectious disease, the prevention and control of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) poses a significant challenge to the development of public health in China. In this study, we aimed to explore the mechanism of the seasonal transmission characteristics of HFMD and to reveal the correlation and potential path between key meteorological factors and the transmissibility of HFMD. Methods Combined with daily meteorological data such as average temperature, average relative humidity, average wind velocity, amount of precipitation, average air pressure, evaporation capacity, and sunshine duration, a database of HFMD incidence and meteorological factors was established. Spearman rank correlation was used to calculate the correlation between the various meteorological factors and the incidence of HFMD. The effective reproduction number (R eff ) of HFMD was used as an intermediate variable to further quantify the dynamic relationship between the average temperature and R eff . Results A total of 43,659 cases of HFMD were reported in Xiamen from 2014 to 2018. There was a significantly positive correlation between the average temperature and the incidence of HFMD (r = 0.596, p 0.05) and incidence. find more There was a temperature threshold for HFMD's transmissibility. Owing to the seasonal transmission characteristics of HFMD in Xiamen, the temperature threshold of HFMD's transmissibility was 13.4-18.4°C and 14.5-29.3°C in spring and summer and in autumn and winter, respectively. Conclusions HFMD's transmissibility may be affected by the average temperature; the temperature threshold range of transmissibility in autumn and winter is slightly wider than that in spring and summer. Based on our findings, we suggest that the relevant epidemic prevention departments should pay close attention to temperature changes in Xiamen to formulate timely prevention strategies before the arrival of the high-risk period. Background Preeclampsia is a significant cause of maternal and perinatal mortality worldwide. Oxidative stress plays a key role in its pathophysiology, hence antioxidants such as tocotrienol may be preventive against preeclampsia. In 2018, the ISSHP revised the definition of preeclampsia. In accordance with the new definition, we report a secondary data analysis from a clinical trial comparing palm oil vitamin E in the form of tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF) against placebo, in preventing preeclampsia. Method A randomized double-blind controlled trial was conducted in 2002-2005 to assess the benefits of TRF in preeclampsia prevention. A total of 299 primigravidae were recruited. The intervention group was supplemented with TRF 100 mg daily in super-olein capsules, whereas the placebo group was prescribed super-olein capsules without TRF, beginning from 12 to 16 gestational weeks until delivery. The primary outcome measure was incidence of preeclampsia. Results The total incidence of pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) was 5%, whereas the incidence of preeclampsia was 2.
