Bedside Cot 6 Months Plus
Bedside sleepers let you keep your baby close in the same room as you are without the risk of sharing beds, which comes with a higher chance of suffocation. They are also a great choice for babies.
Look for models with an adjustable height position that gives a perfect fit on most bed frames. Also, look for breathable fabrics that are easy to clean.
Safety
A bedside cot is basically a bassinet-style cot that fixes to the bed's side to ensure secure co-sleeping. It can be used to lift baby up towards you at night for feeding or soothing. it's a great option if you have a c-section. It's different from a Moses basket or cot because it has high sides to ensure your baby won't fall out. Some models have a tilt function which can help babies with reflux and colic. They are also slightly bigger than Moses baskets, which makes them easier to move from room to room.
The NHS and safe sleep charity The Lullaby Trust advise that newborns should be in their own cot or bassinet in the same room with their parent, but not in your bed. This is because bed-sharing increases the risk of suffocation and overheating. Bedside cribs allow your baby to rest close to you, but in a safe and distinct space.
Check that the crib meets the most current safety standards. It should be BS EN1130, 2019. Also, make sure that there aren't any gaps or places where your baby could get trapped. Find a mattress with a flat, firm surface. A mattress that is too sagging or that is too soft may increase the risk of SIDS in your baby.
Look for bedding that is well-fitted and free of loose blankets or pillowcases. Pillows are a suffocation risk and duvets can be a hazard on the baby's face. It's a good idea to opt for a fitted sheet but ensure it's fitted correctly.
The SnuzPod4 was highly rated by our MFM mom testers as a crib suitable for use at bedtime. It was shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the category of the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It is attached securely to the bed, and can be adjusted to ensure an ideal fit. It has a rocking feature and can be adjusted to an inclined position for reflux. It is also a great option for those with bed sizes that are small or narrow because it doesn't take up the entire space.
Design
The design of a bedside crib is important because it is where your baby will spend most of their time. There are many cribs available in a range of colors that can be matched to your decor. Some have features such as mesh windows to keep your baby's view or drop-down sides that facilitate access. Some cribs even have incline functions to ease reflux.
Many cribs can also be adjusted to the same height as your bed, making it easier to get into and out of the bed at time of night. You can even find some that are designed to function as travel cots, which is great for those who are traveling or visiting relatives.
Home tester and MFM mom Leya found the SnuzPod 4's sleek Scandi styling complements her bedroom decor and added that its compact fold was perfect to save space. bedside travel cot appreciated that one side of the crib can be lowered and allows her to pick up her sleeping baby without having to leave her bed. This is particularly beneficial if you've had a Caesarean or are recovering from one. You can stay close to your baby for longer.
Jasmine is another mom who enjoyed using the SnuzPod 4. She commented that it was simple for her to move the crib from one room to another and back again - something she didn't find with other bedside cribs. However, she did notice that the handle was stiff and it took quite a bit of effort to raise the crib.
The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air is another crib for bed that is easy to fold and move. It was shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in their Best Cot or Crib category. Its slim frame and neutral colors will fit in with the majority of bedrooms, but some of our testers at home felt the bars were a little too close together, meaning they could catch on clothes or toys for babies. The bars' distance shouldn't exceed 6.5cm (2 inches) in order to prevent your baby's head from getting stuck. This crib is also suitable for babies who have reflux, because the ComfortAir air-tight system helps regulate body temperature.
Comfort
Keeping your baby close all night will provide peace of mind, however, you must be able to reach them quickly for middle-of-the-night feeding. You can easily accomplish this without having to leave your bed, with a crib at your bedside. They make it simple to soothe babies to sleep. If you'd like to sleep with your baby but aren't keen on the idea of having to get out of bed for every feed moses baskets are an ideal choice.
Most cribs with a bedside are connected to the bedside which allows you to see and reach your baby. They typically have a mesh window so you can check on your baby without having to disturb them. They may also include a setting for reflux to aid in colic or reflux.
This crib has a lot of options, but we're particularly amazed by the ComfortAir air-tight Mattress that regulates the temperature of your baby's body and maximizes airflow. It's smaller than other bedside cribs that could be useful in areas that are limited in space. However, our mum testers agree that it's still a great option for those long nights.
The cot securely attaches to the side of your bed with adjustable straps, which reduces the possibility of gaps where your baby might get trapped. It comes with an even, firm mattress that is safe and encourages good sleep habits.
It is important to know that your baby will start to leave their crib when they are capable of sitting upright typically about six months old. It's important that you place your child in a cot or in a different arrangement for sleeping, once they outgrow their crib.
A lightweight cot that is suitable for travel is a further option to think about. Some of our mothers love the fact that this crib can be taken apart for transport, but others aren't able to put it together. It can also be difficult to keep clean and you'll need to clean it regularly with a cloth and cleaning product.
Storage
A bedside cot for 6 months and older is a bassinet style bed that can be attached to the side of your mattress for secure co-sleeping. They are ideal for calming babies to sleep, for night feedings and also allowing mothers who had a csection to keep their baby close.
It's crucial to choose a crib that meets the current safety standards. Make sure that the bars on the crib are sufficiently far apart to prevent your child's head from becoming trapped. Also, make sure that the drop-down sides are safe and doesn't fall open accidentally. Avoid placing stickers or transfers onto the surface of the cot because they could be the risk of choking.
Emily's preferred bedside cot for her baby is the Next2me Magic. It was selected for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the categories of Best Cot or Crib and Best Moses Basket. It's a decent size and has plenty of storage space to store everything your baby needs. It is also compact and lightweight enough to fit in a travel bag, if you need to move it around. If you're looking for something a little simpler, she recommends the Shnuggle Air next to the crib.
