ADHD Treatments For Adults
Adults can benefit from many of the same treatments that children receive. These treatments include counseling, medication (psychotherapy), and life skills training. These treatments can include a combination.
Stimulant Medicines
The drugs increase the availability of certain brain chemicals that help control self-regulation and attention. These include methylphenidate (marketed as Ritalin, Concerta) and stimulants in the amphetamine class including Lisdexamphetamine (marketed as Adderall, Vyvanse).
Stimulant Medicines
Stimulants speed up the body and can lead to an increase in mental alertness and physical activity. These include legal substances like caffeine (added in tea and coffee) nicotine, prescription medications used to treat attention-deficit disorder (ADD), narcolepsy, and hyperactivity. In large doses, stimulants can cause over-stimulation and lead to anxiety, heart palpitations, hypertension, aggression and paranoia. untreated adhd in adults -term use of stimulants can cause the dopamine system of the brain to malfunction, reducing feelings of satisfaction. Stimulants are available in pills, liquids, or patches. The most commonly used and illegally obtained stimulants include methamphetamines, cocaine and amphetamines.
These medications are also called central nervous system stimulants. They function by increasing certain chemicals in the brain that improve concentration, decrease fatigue, and boost alertness. They are the first line treatment for adults suffering from ADD or ADHD. They are available as an all-day formula or longer-acting formulations that remain active throughout the day, for example the methylphenidate and lisdexamfetamine.
The health care team may also recommend psychosocial interventions such as education, psychotherapy or coaching. Monitoring the effectiveness of medications over time is vital, and can be an extremely complex process.
Non-stimulant Medications
About 15%-30 percentage of children don't respond to stimulant drugs and this is probably to be the case for adults as well. The non-stimulant drugs take longer to start working, and can sometimes take some time before you begin to notice the effects. However, my latest blog post don't carry the same danger of having side effects as stimulants and can be a better choice in case you aren't able to take them or are worried about addiction.
