High relative humidity (RH) perturbs plant growth, stomatal functioning and abscisic acid (ABA) homeostasis, but the role of ABA in this physiological regulation is equivocal. To determine the role(s) of ABA in plant responses to high RH, wild-type (WT) tomato and barley plants and their respective ABA-deficient mutants flacca and Az34 (which are mutated in the same locus of the ABA biosynthesis pathway) were grown in contrasting RHs (60% and 90%) to measure biomass partitioning, stomatal traits and water relations. Surprisingly, growth RH did not affect foliar ABA levels in either species. While Az34 showed similar stomatal size and density as WT plants, flacca had larger and more abundant stomata. High RH increased stomatal size in tomato, but decreased it in barley, and decreased stomatal density in tomato, but not in barley. Altered stomatal responses in ABA-deficient plants to high RH had little effect on tomato photosynthesis, but Az34 barley showed lower photosynthesis. ABA deficiency decreased relative shoot growth rate (RGRSHOOT ) in both species, yet this was counteracted by high RH increasing leaf water status in tomato, but not in barley. High RH increased RGRSHOOT in flacca, but not in WT tomatoes, while having no effect on RGRSHOOT in barley, but affecting barley net assimilation rate, leaf area ratio (LAR) and specific leaf area in an ABA-dependent manner. ABA-RH interaction affected leaf development in tomato only. Thus, different crop species show variable responses to both high RH and ABA deficiency, making it difficult to generalise on the role of ABA in growth regulation at contrasting RHs.
Rituximab (RTX) is an effective treatment to maintaining remission in patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS), but there are few reports on the effect of RTX treatment on quality of life (QOL). The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a periodically repeated RTX treatment from the perspective of QOL.

We systematically assessed the QOL of pediatric patients with refractory NS and parents' perceptions of their child's QOL through a two-year RTX treatment protocol. Pediatric patients from Hokkaido University Hospital with refractory NS who met our specific criteria were enrolled between January 2015 and December 2015. RTX infusion was performed 4 times at 6-month intervals, followed by mizoribine administration with early discontinuation of calcineurin inhibitors. QOL scores were measured by PedsQL at each RTX administration and evaluated 2 years later.

Twenty-two patients were analyzed. Both the patient's QOL and their parents' perceptions of their QOL improved over our 2-year treatment protocol. Nevertheless, the parents' scores were lower than the patients' scores on all scales, with slower improvement.

Our treatment protocol showed a significant improvement of QOL in patients with refractory NS. Although the risk of the RTX treatment should be considered, the treatment is useful for patients with refractory NS.

Some combinations of biomolecules and nanoparticles have proven to be excellent therapeutics for Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in the last decades. Targeted gene delivery has shown in vivo as well as in vitro promising results with therapeutic efficacy. Gene therapy has shown enhanced transfection efficiency and better targeting potential on several NSCLC cell lines. Still, there are several challenges in nanoparticle-mediated gene therapy, which include stability of biomolecules and nanoparticles during delivery, managing their biodistribution, and reducing the possible cytotoxic effects of the nanoparticles, which need to be solved before clinical trials. Evaluation of therapeutic efficacy of biomolecules and nanoparticle combination in gene therapy must be established to expand the application of nano-gene therapy in cancer treatment.
It has been suggested, on a theoretical basis, that ultrasound screening of thyroid nodules in obese patients with additional risk factors (family history, chronic autoimmune thyroiditis or high thyrotropin) might be cost-effective for the early detection and treatment of thyroid cancer. Patients with obesity who attended hospital-based clinics were evaluated for risk factors of thyroid cancer and ultrasound screened for thyroid nodularity. Detected nodules were evaluated according to current guidelines.
