Although Iraq has one of the world's oldest cultural histories and an important geographic location, forensic reference data on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region in Iraqi populations are scarce, particularly for populations residing in the southern part of Iraq. Mitochondrial DNA typing is an excellent tool for forensic investigations and in missing-person cases because of its unique qualities, such as mtDNA non-coding control region with specific genetic markers, high copy numbers in cells, maternal inheritance, and lack of recombination.

Forensic analysis was performed on the entire mtDNA control region in 203 unrelated Iraqi individuals residing in Samawah City of Iraq. Polymorphisms in the mtDNA were detected using polymerase chain reaction and Sanger-type sequencing, and the sequences were aligned to compare with revised Cambridge Reference Sequence (rCRS).

The sequencing results revealed 111 haplotypes characterized by 143 polymorphic positions. Of these haplotypes, 63 were unique and 48 were shared by more than one person. The haplotype data generated in this study will be available on EMPOP via accession number EMP00814.

High-quality documentation of dumping symptoms after esophagectomy is currently limited. The aim of the study was to describe the incidence of symptoms associated with dumping syndrome and their relationship with health-related quality of life after esophagectomy.

The study cohort was identified from prospective IRB-approved databases from two high-volume esophagectomy centers. Patients that were alive and without evidence of recurrence in April 2018 completed the validated Dumping Symptom Rating Scale and health-related quality of life questionnaires. Compound dumping symptom score was created by combining the individual scores for severity and frequency for each symptom.

In total, 171 patients who underwent esophagectomy 1995-2017 responded to the questionnaires, corresponding to a response rate of 77.0%. ALLN order Median age was 66 years and median time from operation to survey was 5.5 years. Absent or mild problems in all nine dumping symptoms were reported by 94 (59.5%) patients; 19 (12.0%) patients reportedd quality of life.Sex differences in human placenta exist from early pregnancy to term, however, it is unclear whether these differences are driven solely by sex chromosome complement or are subject to differential sex hormonal regulation. Here, we survey the human chorionic villus (CV) transcriptome for sex-linked signatures from 11 to 16 gestational weeks, corresponding to the first window of increasing testis-derived androgen production in male fetuses. Illumina HiSeq RNA sequencing was performed on Lexogen Quantseq 3' libraries derived from CV biopsies (n = 11 females, n = 12 males). Differential expression (DE) was performed to identify sex-linked transcriptional signatures, followed by chromosome mapping, pathway analysis, predicted protein interaction, and post-hoc linear regressions to identify transcripts that trend over time. We observe 322 transcripts DE between male and female CV from 11 to 16 weeks, with 22 transcripts logFC > 1. Contrary to our predictions, the difference between male and female expression of DE autosomal genes was more pronounced at the earlier gestational ages. In females, we found selective upregulation of extracellular matrix components, along with a number of X-linked genes. In males, DE transcripts centered on chromosome 19, with mitochondrial, immune, and pregnancy maintenance-related transcripts upregulated. Among the highest differentially expressed autosomal genes were CCRL2, LGALS13, and LGALS14, which are known to regulate immune cell interactions. Our results provide insight into sex-linked gene expression in late first and early second trimester developing human placenta and lay the groundwork to understand the mechanistic origins of sex differences in prenatal development.Cryopreservation of immature testicular tissue is an experimental strategy for the preservation of fertility in prepubertal boys that will be subjected to a gonadotoxic onset, as is the case of oncologic patients. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the impact of chemotherapeutic treatments on the testicular histologic phenotype in prepubertal patients. A total of 56 testicular tissue samples from pediatric patients between 0 and 16 years old (28 with at least one previous chemotherapeutic onset and 28 untreated controls) were histologically analyzed and age-matched compared. At least two 5-μm sections from testis per patient separated by a distance of 100 μm were immunostained for the germ cell marker VASA, the spermatogonial markers UTF1, PLZF, UCHL1, and SALL4, the marker for proliferative cells KI67, and the Sertoli cell marker SOX9. The percentage of tubule cross-sections positive for each marker and the number of positive cells per tubule cross-section were determined and association with the cumulative dose received of each chemotherapeutic drug was statistically assessed. Results indicated that alkylating agents, cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide, but also the antimetabolite cytarabine and asparaginase were associated with a decreased percentage of positive tubules and a lower number of positive cells per tubule for the analyzed markers. Our results provide new evidences of the potential of chemotherapeutic agents previously considered to have low gonadotoxic effects such as cytarabine and asparaginase to trigger a severe testicular phenotype, hampering the potential success of future fertility restoration in experimental programs of fertility preservation in prepubertal boys.U.S. public university campuses are held directly responsible for compliance with many of the same federal- and state-level environmental regulations as cities, including stormwater management. While operating as 'cities within cities' in many respects, campuses face unique constraints in achieving stormwater regulatory compliance. To compare the abilities of campuses to comply with stormwater regulations to municipalities, we conduct mixed-methods research using primary data from five University of California (UC) campuses. Public universities constituted over 20% of California's "nontraditional" permittees under the municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) regulation regime in 2013. We utilize semi-structured interviews with campus and regulatory officials, a survey of campus students and staff around support and willingness to pay for innovative stormwater management, and content analysis of campus stormwater management documents to examine challenges to public university stormwater compliance. We find that, despite their progressive environmental practices in other areas like energy and water conservation, even as compared to cities, stormwater management practices on the evaluated campuses are constrained by several factors infrastructure financing limitations, lack of transparent and coordinated decision-making, a lack of campus resident involvement, and regulatory inflexibility.
