L.) plays a promising role in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and cosmetic production. On the other hand, olive leaf is widely used in folk medicine due to its antihyperglycemic activity. For this aim, possible effects of olive leaf extract (OLE) in the brain tissue of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were investigated.

A total of 28 male rats were divided into four equal groups as control, diabetic (single dose of 45mg/kg streptozotocin, i.p.), OLE (500mg/kg/day), and diabetic+OLE groups. The study was terminated 21days after the diabetes model was formed. At the end of the study, all the animals were sacrificed and blood and brain tissues were isolated. Relative brain weights, complete blood count, blood glycated hemoglobin, serum glucose, total protein, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, gonadal hormone levels, production and messenger ribonucleic acid(mRNA) levels of proinflammatory cytokines and mediators, total thiol, total oxidative stress, and total antioxidant status levels and fatty acid composition in brain tissue were measured in all study groups.

In diabetic rats, relative brain weight and serum insulin level decreased, glycated hemoglobin, oxidative stress, production and mRNA level of proinflammatory cytokines and mediators increased, hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia, degraded fatty acid composition, anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia occurred. After OLE treatment, a remarkable improvement in most of these parameters, except gonadal hormones, has been observed in diabetic rats.

In this paper, we develop a unified framework for combining information from high-dimensional individual-level data and potentially low-dimensional external aggregate data under the Cox model. We summarize various forms of external aggregated information by population estimating equations and propose a penalized empirical likelihood approach to borrow information from these estimating equations. The proposed methods possess the flexibility to handle the case where individual-level data and external aggregate data are from heterogeneous populations. Specifically, a penalized empirical likelihood ratio test is developed to check for the potential heterogeneity, and a semiparametric density ratio model is postulated to account for the heterogeneity. Moreover, we study the impact of uncertainty in the auxiliary information on the efficiency gain and propose a modified variance estimator to adjust for the uncertainty. The proposed estimators enjoy the oracle property and are asymptotically more efficient than the penalized partial likelihood estimator that does not exploit the external aggregated information. Simulation studies show improvement in both estimation efficiency and variable selection over the competitors. The proposed approaches are applied to the analysis of a pediatric kidney transplant study for illustration.
Nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely studied as an alternative to antibiotic use due to their antimicrobial properties at lower concentrations. Enterococcus faecalis is a facultative Gram-positive microorganism inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals. It can also be present in other environments such as the oral cavity, water, sewage, soil and food.

We evaluated whether E. faecalis could develop resistance to silver NPs (AgNPs) after exposure to sublethal concentrations of the NPs.

Proteomic analyses revealed that different pathways were activated during the acquired resistance under sublethal concentrations, and selected genes were validated by qPCR.

The results of this study showed that E. faecalis is capable of generating resistance to AgNPs.

To avoid the generation of resistance against AgNPs, future use of these NPs should be combined with other NPs prepared with different metals to prevent the dissemination of resistant strains.
