Improving access to diagnosis constitutes a key step in the control of the Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/AIDS epidemic. Rapid testing is increasingly gaining interest as a powerful diagnostic tool to achieve this goal. The purpose of this study was to implement the rapid HIV test (RHT) in a clinical setting in order to evaluate its effectiveness in increasing HIV diagnosis and patient linkage to the healthcare system. The RHT was offered to all patients attending a sexually-transmitted disease clinic in the City of Buenos Aires between March and December 2015. A total of 593 RHT were performed. The implementation of the RHT yielded an increase in frequency of diagnosis from 6.9% to 31.4% (p less then 0.001). The first steps of the care cascade showed high retention rates around 90%. RHT yielded an HIV prevalence of 6.3% (95% CI 4.2-8.5) in this population. HIV prevalence tended to be higher in individuals with no previous HIV testing (p=0.09). Linkage to the healthcare system was associated with a higher probability of having been tested for HIV (p=0.008). The incorporation of the RHT resulted in a high retention of patients and an increase in both frequency of diagnosis and results reception when compared to the classic methodology. BACKGROUND Several techniques for performing ethmoidectomy have been reported. We describe a safe, effective and efficient technique during functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). We present text, images and videos to illustrate our preferred technique during an antero-posterior ethmoidectomy and to provide a multimedia tool for educational purpose. METHODS A description of the technique without prospective or retrospective data is reported. A complete ethmoidectomy with an L-shape approach is described step-by-step, using the backbiting circular and miniature cutting forceps, with safe exposure of the lamina papyracea (LP) and skull base. RESULTS In our hands, the L-shape approach for chronic rhinosinusitis with or without polyposis, performed with punch circular cutting and miniature cutting forceps, allowed for a reliably safe and efficient ethmoidectomy. CONCLUSION The technique described can be added to the armamentarium of the endoscopic sinus surgeon. Breast implants are associated with well-known common complications that have been widely studied, such as rupture and capsular contraction. However, the increasingly growing number of patients with breast implants has led to the increased likelihood of coming across less common complications; these include seromas or late infection; adenopathies in the internal mammary chain; granulomas in the capsule of the implant, which in some cases can extend beyond the fibrous capsule; desmoid tumors associated with the implants; and breast implant-associated large cell anaplastic lymphoma. This article aims to review the main uncommon complications associated with breast implants and to describe and illustrate their findings in different imaging techniques. Proper management of these complications is important; this is especially true of late seroma and the diagnosis of breast implant-associated large cell anaplastic lymphoma for their repercussions. According to the search in the state of the art, no antecedents were found in which photocatalytic degradation of 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) hormone has been carried out using doped-TiO2. Nor have the transformation products formed during the heterogeneous photocatalysis (FH) been identified. Therefore, in this study we analyzed the photocatalytic degradation of the MT in aqueous solution, using doped TiO2 with Sm3+ or Gd3+ at 0.3 and 0.5 %wt. Thermal treatment temperature (500 °C and 800 °C) and MT (20 mgL-1) mineralization were also studied. All photocatalysts were synthesized using the sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Specific Surface Area (BET), Ultraviolet-visible Spectroscopy (UV-vis), High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope/Energy-Dispersive X-ray analysis (HRTEM/EDS) and, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and photoluminescence (PL). MT mineralization was followed by a total organic carbon analyzer (TOC). The route of the photocatalytic mineralization of the hormone was obtained from the analysis of intermediate compounds determined by high performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-TOF-MS). The results showed that TM and its transformation products were not degraded by photolysis. However, the degree of mineralization of the hormone was greater when the photocatalytic process was used. The photocatalytic efficiency was related to the dopant concentration, dopant type and thermal treatment. Therefore, Sm (0.3%)/TiO2 calcined at 500 °C showed the best performance for photocatalytic mineralization of MT. OBJECTIVES To evaluate transesterification based dissolution of dimethacrylate and epoxy polymers, the former containing ester groups. Polymer substrates were treated with an adhesive resin (Stick™ Resin) and an organic catalyst-alcohol solution (ethylene glycol and triazabicyclodecene). The surface was chemically and nanomechanically analyzed with Fourier Transform-Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, surface profile peak (Rp) and nanohardness and modulus of elasticity. METHODS A total of 100 specimens each of light-cured dimethacrylate polymer and heat-cured diepoxy polymer were prepared. 20 specimens were randomly selected and used as control group (0s). The remaining specimens were randomly divided into 40 each for treatment with an Stick™ resin and ethylene glycol+triazabicyclodecene. Within each group the 40 specimens were randomly subdivided into 20 each for treatment at 5min and 24h, with 10 specimens for FTIR and nanohardness and modulus of elasticity, and the other 10 for SEM and surface Rp analyses. RESULTS Dimethacrylate polymer showed a reduction in the nanohardness and modulus of elasticity, Rp values and SEM also showed significant topographical changes after being treated with either Stick™ resin or ethylene glycol+triazabicyclodecene, whereas epoxy resin substrate did not. FTIR analyses affirmed changes in the intensity of ester groups. CDK inhibitor SIGNIFICANCE Ester group containing dimethacrylate polymer showed a reduction in NMP within 5min of exposure to the treatment agents with softening by solution ethylene glycol+triazabicyclodecene associated to the reduction of ester groups in the polymer structure by transesterification. Epoxy polymer without ester groups was not affected by surface softening with treatment agents. Adhesive resin caused surface swelling.
