Bedside Crib and Travel Cot
Bedside cribs look similar to an infant bassinet, and are attached to the sides of a bed. They usually have one side that can be dropped down for easy access, and some have an incline setting that's perfect for babies who have reflux.
MFM tester Georgina found this crib very simple to assemble and the instructions were simple, resulting in a quick and easy build. It folds down to a compact size and comes with a handy bag for travel.
Easy to put together
Bedside cribs are typically easy to set up, and are on the smaller side, so they are able to be placed neatly beside your bed. They are also lighter, making them more mobile. Georgina, who was one of MFM's home testers said that the Maxi-Cosi Lora was "super easy to assemble, with clear instructions and easy zips." This crib can be used as a portable cot and comes with a convenient bag. It features multiple mesh windows to allow for airflow and the adjustable height means it will fit any mattress.
Some bedside cribs have the option of a side panel that could be adjusted to lower, allowing you easy access to your baby without having to step out of your bed. This is a great choice for breastfeeding mums or parents who want to be close to their child all night long but don't want to be at risk of co-sleeping (which is associated to an increased risk of SIDS).
The majority of models have a built-in rocking function. This can be extremely soothing for your baby, and help them fall asleep. Some cribs have a reclining position that can be useful if your baby has reflux or colic. These should only be used under supervision, and a GP or health visitor should be consulted before trying this position.
A lot of cribs with a bedside have a canopy that protects your baby from noise or light. This can help calm the baby. Some come with a storage compartment underneath, which is great to store blankets, nappies, and other items for your baby.
Many bedside cribs are convertible into toddler beds or standalone cots. This is a key selling point for many families. The Joie Roomie, winner of the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards is a fantastic example. It has removable side panels and a conversion kit and a tummy-tilt, making it travel-friendly. It has five different height adjustments that can be set to your bed. Our MFM home testers loved it for its comfort, easy to assemble and compact. The Graco Play Yard (also called as the pack and play) is a different favorite, and was shortlisted in the 2022 Mother&Baby Awards.
Cosy and comfortable
You can monitor your child from the peace of your bed by using the bedside crib. It's a great choice for moms who are recovering from a C section as you can easily carry your child towards you to feed their needs at night or change their nappies with no need to get out of the bed. The most cozy cribs come with mesh sides that allow you to see your baby through.
Some cribs let you lower the barrier completely. This lets you co-sleep without the risks. (Make sure that the crib you choose meets the current safety standards). Some allow you to keep the barrier lowered but pop it back up after you've lifted baby off, which is better for parents who are afflicted by fears of their baby falling off the edge of their mattress.
The Luah was awarded the 2021 Mother&Baby Award for Best Crib, Cot, or Moses Basket - is designed to clip onto bedsteads and divan beds, but it does require some longer straps than other models (check the specifications to make certain your bed is able to accommodate). The large design has an opening side panel, a patent-pending perforated bottom that creates air cushioning to increase air flow. There's also an integrated reflux setting, and a 360-degree swivel to allow you to rotate the crib to suit the preferred position of your baby.
If you are looking for something smaller Tutti Bambini CoZee has oak legs that come with a range of fabric options that match your decor. It's also easy to put together. Georgina who took part in the MFM test was capable of putting it together in a matter of minutes without needing to consult any instructions. It's also a great travel cot. It folds flat and can be easily stuffed into bags.
The Next2me Magic, which was shortlisted for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, is also on the larger side but is still relatively compact and easy to fit onto your bed. Georgina found it easy to assemble too, although she did feel the zips could have been better explained on the instruction manual.
Easy to clean
Look for cribs that come with mattress covers that can be washed with the machine while looking at cribs for bed or travel cots. This will keep it clean and free of dribbles, spit-up, and leaky diapers. It's also a good idea to select a model that is able to be disassembled and partially dismantled, so that you can access every nook and cranny for a thorough cleaning and sanitising.
This is essential, as it will ensure that all dirt and germs have been eliminated. It is also important to ensure that the sides of your crib are securely attached, so there are no gaps or areas in which your child could slip down or become trapped.
Aside from being easy to clean, you'll also want a crib for your bed that is comfortable for your baby and will fit comfortably into your own bed. This is particularly important if you are using a bedside crib to facilitate co-sleeping. These cribs are designed to be attached securely to the parent's side, which gives parents easy access to their child during the night to feed and soothe them while maintaining the security that separate sleeping areas provide.
When selecting a crib for your bed take into consideration whether it has additional features that could be beneficial to you. Some cribs tilt or rock, which is great for babies who tend to be fussy.
You'll also want to make sure that your crib or travel cot has a firm and flat mattress that fits snugly in the frame. This will decrease the risk of SIDS because the baby's head and feet will not fall into folds or gaps in the bedding.
It's also an excellent idea to purchase a new mattress for your cot, crib or travel bed, rather than using one that was given to you by someone else or purchased second-hand. Mattresses that have been used are more susceptible to lose their shape over time, increasing the risk for SIDS. All cribs new to market must meet BS EN1130:2019. This is the most recent standard, which introduces stricter requirements to ensure the safety of your sleep and provide effective solutions.
Multi-faceted
A bedside crib (or co-sleeping crib, as they're often referred to) can be attached to your bed to allow you to easily reach your baby at night without having to leave your sleeping space. They can also be used as a separate crib during the daytime. They usually include a side panel that can be moved down so you can be able to see and touch your baby. baby bedside sleeper let you keep the side panel in place at night. This lets you be close and comfortable with your baby, while minimising the risk of sharing the bed. Some cribs can also be transformed into a travel cot. Other cribs come with additional features like tilting, rocking, or converting into an older crib for babies.
The SnuzPod 4 is a consistently well-loved crib and it's not just about its sleek, modern design. It comes with six height adjustments and a handy storage shelf. It's also a bit heavier and bulkier than many of our cribs that are more suitable for travel, but it comes in a convenient bag to keep it clean and dust-free when stored.
It's simple to put together, with clear instructions and helpful tools to guide you. It is also easy to clean thanks to a machine washable mattress cover and breathable fabric. It comes with a few more features than other cribs for bed we've tested, such as an anti-reflux incline, rocking function and a storage pocket.
Jasmin says that this crib is fantastic because it is "easy to reach the baby in the middle of the night for fuss free feeding and is larger than the majority of Moses Baskets, so it will last a longer period of time before my son is old enough to use it". She also loves that it's easy to clean and feels sturdy and well-made. It's even designed to fit on a divan bed, which makes it a great choice for those with limited space. Additionally, it comes with a convenient carry bag to take along when travelling. A perfect all-rounder.
