Humans' early olfactory perception has been studied mainly within the framework of mother-offspring interactions and only a few studies have focused on newborns' abilities to discriminate body odors per se. The aim of this study was to develop a method to evaluate olfactory social preferences of infants at term-equivalent age. Twenty dyads of infants (10 born preterm and 10 born at term) at term-equivalent age and their mothers were included. We analyzed the behavioral reactions of infants to their mother's upper-chest odor (that bears social, non-food related information). The two impregnated gauzes and a control gauze were presented to the infants for 10 s each, in a random order. We compared two durations of gauze impregnation 30 min and 12 h. This study reveals that mothers' upper chest emits sufficient olfactory information to induce reactions in infants born full-term or born preterm and that a short impregnation is preferable to evaluate their perception of body odors, notably for those born preterm.Purpose The surgical margin for liver resection to treat hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is occasionally less then 1 mm. This study determined the impact of a surgical margin less then 1 mm [marginal resection (MR)] on the types of recurrence and the prognosis in solitary HCC. Methods The data of 454 patients undergoing curative liver resection for solitary HCC in our institution were analyzed. selleck kinase inhibitor The patients were divided into the MR (n = 90) and non-MR (n = 364) groups. The clinicopathological data and outcomes after liver resection were compared. A case-matching analysis using a propensity scoring method was also performed. Results The recurrence-free survival was significantly and overall survival was marginally significantly lower in the MR group than in the non-MR group (p = 0.012-0.051, respectively). According to a multivariate analysis, MR was not a significant independent factor for recurrence-free survival (p = 0.056). After propensity score matching, there were no significant differences in the recurrence-free and overall survival between the two groups (p = 0.375-0.496, respectively). Furthermore, there were no significant differences in the intrahepatic recurrence patterns between the two groups before and after matching. Conclusion MR for solitary HCC might be sufficient in patients with a limited liver functional reserve.One of the key problems that have hindered the development and approval of anticancer nanoparticle drug delivery systems is the limited predictability of 2D cell culture and animal models. Here, we describe a biomimetic alveolus-epithelium-on-a-chip (AEOC) model with in-built sensors for monitoring and evaluating pH-responsive zinc oxide quantum dots (QDs)-loaded human serum albumin nanoparticles. This AEOC model closely represents the cancerous alveolus epithelium, which comprises lung cancer cells, as well as stromal cells, such as fibroblasts along with extracellular matrix (ECM) in the form of collagen. ZnO QDs were encapsulated in the HSA nanoparticles with a diameter of 60 nm. The physicochemical properties, quantum dots release, in vitro cytotoxicity, and cellular uptake of HSA-ZnO were evaluated. HSA-ZnO showed higher ZnO loading and encapsulation efficacy. TEER and pH sensors were used to monitor the cells over three days, and real-time data with and without nanoparticle treatment were obtained. Cell viability after treatment with 10 and 50 µg/mL of HSA-ZnO nanoparticles and confocal imaging data confirmed the significant internalization of the nanoparticles under co-culture cellular conditions in the AEOC model. This paper presents a case of a 39-year old man with aneurysmal dilatation of thoracic aorta and aortic valve insufficiency. The aortic wall showed thickening and wrinkled "tree bark" appearance as well as apparent scarring of the intima. Histological examination revealed intimal hyperplasia, a granulomatous/giant cell pattern in the inner tunica media, a few epithelioid macrophages, abundant chronic lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic inflammation and discrete fibrinoid necrosis. The histological findings were indicative of Horton's disease, but no typical clinical features were present. Methods We have modified a cosmetic genioplasty, which can guarantee the continuity of the lower edge of the bilateral mandible by rotating the chin segment clockwise. Fourteen patients submitted to our modified cosmetic genioplasty alone were included in the study. The facial convexity angle and the ratio of the face were measured by analyzing photographs. The position of the hyoid bone and the width of the PAS were measured by analyzing lateral cephalograms.
