Eufy's top-rated robot vacuum and mop takes a bit of the hands-off work out of keeping your floors spotless. It is able to refill its own water tank, self-empty its larger tower bin and then change out the dust bag.
Advanced models can map your house and record furniture placement. They can also detect hazards and navigate around them, like loose charging cables or loose socks.
Object Avoidance
Object avoidance helps your robot to avoid hitting things like cords, toys, and clothing that could be caught in the vacuum. This is especially important if you have kids or pets who may be likely to leave items on the floor, which your robot could find them.
Depending on the model you select the robot you choose may come with a variety of sensor options to aid in navigating around obstacles. Some of the most popular include crossed IR sensor beams, which are infrared-focused lights which scan the room for things like furniture legs or door frames. Many robots have adopted this technology, and you can find it in the top models that are more expensive.
Other technologies for avoiding objects that you might find in more expensive robots include 3D Structured Light, which uses cameras and crossed IR sensors to map the environment and identify obstacles; and Time of Flight (ToF) sensors which emit and measure the time it takes for light to reflect off objects, to determine the distance to them. These aren't very common but are a great option for your robot in case you're looking to add peace of mind.
Most of the top-rated robots are also able to mop your floors. Some come with their own water tanks, which allow them to clean up wet spills and messes. You'll have to empty your robot's dust bin and wipe down the cameras and sensors in between cleaning sessions, but these chores should not take a lot of time.
Mapping
Mapping capabilities are essential in robot vacuums because they allow them to recognize your home's layout, and avoid bumping into things like walls. They may be tripped by pet toys, cords or furniture that are not marked. This can result in them taking up less space. Most robots employ sensors to map your home and navigate around obstacles. This allows them to sweep your floors using fewer passes, which saves you time. A lot of the top robot vacuums also come with this feature, which enables you to designate areas that are not accessible.
Robots with a built-in LIDAR system use this technology to map your home quickly and efficiently. During our tests with the Eufy Clean robot used this feature to divide my home into various areas and clean each independently this was a significant improvement over the lesser models we tested that just utilized the front bump sensor. This was a more accurate method of navigating my home and was easy to control using the app on the device.
While no robot vacuum can climb stairs yet, most of the top-rated models have good obstacle avoidance and mapping capabilities. These tools let them remove debris from low-pile and hard floors, and to avoid falling down the stairs. Some tools are equipped with sensors to prevent them falling over the edge of stairs. Others come with boundary strips to keep them from getting in.
robot vacuum cleaner have a large tower base which holds their collected dirt, minimizing the amount of dust and allergens emitted into your home. The bases can be kept for weeks or months without having to be cleaned which is particularly beneficial if you suffer from allergies. Certain models come with self-emptying dust bins that you can empty without opening or closing them manually.
Wi-Fi enabled
Some robot vacuums connect via Wi-Fi with their applications. This lets you control them with your smartphone instead (or in addition) to the physical remote. They are more expensive, but they can help you save time by allowing you to schedule cleaning times on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis. They also permit you to edit and save floor maps, and provide alternative cleaning routines.
Dual sensors are employed by the most modern robot vacuums. They combine the LIDAR mapping system with a structured-light sensor that can detect and block out objects, even if they're hidden under furniture or power cables. Those features allow your robot to maneuver into small spaces, like the nook beneath your kitchen cabinets and beneath sofas, where many other robots have difficulty. They are also faster to navigate around obstacles, and have longer run times and larger dust bins. This makes them ideal for large homes compared to entry-level robots.
The most effective robot vacuums are quick and efficient. They are also intelligent and powerful. They can pick up a wide range of floor debris, including pet hair, cat litter and other messes. They are also quite quiet, which makes them an ideal option for homes with pets or young children. Many of the robot vacuum owners we've spoken to report that they enjoy the convenience of keeping their floors cleaned with little effort, especially when used frequently. Robots can last as long as traditional vacuum cleaners with the right maintenance (cleaning rotating brushes and keeping the track of spare parts). PCWorld has a helpful guide that outlines some essential tips to help you keep your machine running in good shape for the years to come.
Larger Dust Bags
A robotic vacuum is not as effective at cleaning like an upright or canister vacuum, but it is fantastic at picking up dust and dirt that regular vacuuming leaves behind. It is also a great tool for quick touch-ups on bare floors and can maneuver through cords and other obstacles in the home. If you don't wish to do the deep cleaning yourself, a robotic cleaner can be set to send it out to scour your floors on a regular basis.
Some of the best rated robot vacuums have huge dust bags that are easy to empty and can hold more than one room's worth of dirt. This will save you time and money on new bags. This feature is available on several models which includes our top model, the Ecovacs T30S Combo. This all-in-one robovac has an impressive performance score and includes self-emptying bin. It comes with a mopping function and an efficient navigation. It is a close race between the iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ and this one, which is equipped with smart mapping and avoidance technologies. The robovac is more expensive, but it has more capacity.
The two models also differ in how they handle long hair, which may get caught in the rollers of certain robots. The Roborock Q5 Max+, SwitchBot K10S Plus and Roborock Q5 Max+ are the most efficient models. They all have top hair pickup and tangle-avoidance scores along with great auto empty results and great path planning. The Shark Matrix Plus and eufy are also excellent options, with decent hair pick-up and tangle avoidance but not as much path planing or auto empty.
The most recent robots have sensors that can detect dirt and debris in the carpet, and are better at removing loose pet hair. Some have a mopping mode that can use the reservoir of water to eliminate the stains and spills. This feature is a must-have for families with pets and children.
Maintenance
Having a robot vacuum can be a huge aid in keeping up with your home. While no robot is able to replace an upright or a canister vacuum for deep cleaning, the top rated models pick up pet hair, lint and other dirt that accumulates on hard floors and low-pile carpets which can pick up more than you could using the broom. They also come with navigation features that prevent them from getting stuck on cords for power or rug fringe and are able to glide effortlessly under furniture.
According to the model, you can schedule the robot vacuum to run several times a day or observe it in action with an app. However, these handy machines are also susceptible to clogging and require regular maintenance like emptying the onboard bin (or the base's bigger dust bin in certain cases) as well as checking the brushes for hair that is tangled, and regularly rinsing and letting the filters dry according to the manufacturer.
Vacuum expert Emily Rairdin, a store owner apprentice at University Vacuum + Sewing, says that a quality robot vacuum will last for three to five years or more with regular care and attention. She recommends emptying the bin and brush roll frequently cutting out hair that gets caught in the brushes, and regularly rinsing and drying the filter, especially if it is a mop as well. It's also recommended to clean the sensors and charging contacts on the dock or the robot occasionally with a soft cloth. Then, simply recharge and refill the robot whenever you need to for your next cleaning session.
