Bedside Crib and Travel Cot
Bedside cribs resemble an infant bassinet, and are attached to the side of the bed. They typically have one side that can be put down to make it easier to reach and some come with an incline setting that's perfect for babies with reflux.
MFM test subject Georgina found the crib to be easy to put together and the instructions were simple, resulting in a quick and easy build. It folds down to a compact size and comes with a convenient bag for transport.
Easy to put together
Bedside cribs are generally easy to set up, and are on the smaller side, so they fit neatly alongside your bed. They are also lighter, which makes them more portable. Georgina who was one of MFM's home testers, said that the Maxi-Cosi Lora was "super easy to assemble, with clear instructions and simple zips." This crib can be used as a travel crib and comes with a convenient bag. It has multiple mesh openings for ventilation, and its adjustable height allows it to be adapted to any mattress.
Some cribs with a bedside have the option of a side panel that could be adjusted to lower, allowing you the ability to be close to your baby without having to step out of your bed. This is a great choice for breastfeeding mums or parents who want to be close to their baby throughout the night but don't want to be at risk of co-sleeping (which is linked to a higher risk of SIDS).
Most models come with an integrated function that lets you to rock your baby. This can be a soothing experience for your baby and help them to fall asleep. Some cribs feature a reclining position that can be beneficial in the case of reflux or colic. They should only be used under supervision. A health professional or a GP is recommended prior to attempting this position.
A lot of cribs with a bedside have an umbrella to protect your baby from noise and light. This can help in calming the baby. Some cribs come with a storage area underneath that can be used to store extra blankets, diapers and other clothes for your child.
Many bedside cribs are convertible into toddler beds or standalone cots. This is a key selling feature for a lot of families. The Joie Roomie, winner of the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards is a fantastic example. It comes with removable side panels as well as a conversion kit and a tummy-tilt, making it travel-friendly. It also comes with 5 different height adjustments to match your bed, and was praised by our MFM home testers for being simple to put together, comfortable and compact. The Graco Play Yard (also known as the pack and play) is another popular choice and was shortlisted for the 2022 Mother&Baby Awards.
Cosy and comfy
You can keep an eye on your child from the peace of your bed by using a crib that is placed at your bedside. It's a great option for a mother recovering from a c-section since you can easily carry your baby up to you to feed them or make nappy changes without having to get up. And the cosiest cribs also have breathable mesh sides which you can see your baby through.
Some cribs lower the barrier completely, offering the option of sleeping together without the associated risks (check that your chosen model is in compliance with the most recent safety standards though). Some cribs let you lower the barrier but then lift it back up after you lift baby out. This is a good option for parents with concerns about their child's ability to roll off their mattress.
The Luah was awarded the Mother&Baby Awards Best Cot, or Moses Basket in 2021, is designed to attach to bedsteads and divans however, it requires a longer strap (check your specifications to be sure your bed can be accommodated). It's a spacious model with an opening side panel and an exclusive perforated base that creates an air cushion to boost airflow. Additionally, it has an integrated reflux setting and a 360 swivel so you can rotate the crib to suit the position of your baby.
If you are seeking something smaller Tutti Bambini CoZee has oak legs with a variety of fabric options that complement your decor. It's also super-easy to assemble as Georgina who took part in our MFM tests, put it together speedily and didn't need to read the instructions. It is also a great travel cot. It folds flat and can be easily stuffed into bags.
The Next2me Magic, which was shortlisted for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, is also slightly larger than the average, but is still quite small and easy to put to your bed. Georgina also found it easy to assemble although she thought the instructions could have been more clear regarding the zips.
Easy to clean
When you're looking at travel cots and bedside cribs make sure they have a mattress cover that is removable that can be machine-washed. This will keep it clean and free of dribbles leaky diapers, and spit-up. It is also recommended to choose a model that is easily disassembled to allow you to clean and sanitise all the nooks.
This is crucial, as it will ensure that all germs and dirt have been eliminated. It is also important to ensure that the sides of your crib are securely secured, ensuring that there are no gaps or spaces in which your child could slip down or become trapped.
You'll also need to make sure that the crib is easy to clean and it fits with your bed. This is particularly crucial if you're using a bedside crib for co-sleeping. bedside crib or cot are designed to be attached securely to the parent's side, which gives parents easy access to their baby during the night to feed and soothe their baby while still ensuring the safety that separate sleeping surfaces offer.
When selecting a crib for your bedroom take into consideration whether it comes with extra features that may be beneficial to you. Some cribs tilt or rock, which is great for babies who are a bit fussy.
It is important to ensure that your crib or travel bed is made of a firm, flat mattress that is snugly fitted into the frame. This will reduce the chance of SIDS because your baby's head and feet won't fall into any gaps or folds in the bedding.
It's a good idea to purchase a new mattress for your crib or travel cot, rather than using one that was handed down or purchased second-hand. Mattresses that have been used tend to lose their shape with time and increase the risk of SIDS. All cribs that are new must meet BS EN1130:2019. This is the most current standard, which introduces stricter requirements to ensure secure and efficient sleep solutions.
Versatile
The bedside crib, or co-sleeping mattress as it's often referred to it is attached to the bed so that you can access your baby easily at night without leaving your bed. They can also be used as a separate crib in the daytime. The majority of cribs have a side panel which can be adjusted to allow you to feel your baby's hand and see him. Some have the option to keep the panel down all night, which gives you the closeness and convenience of co-sleeping with your newborn, but minimises the risks of bed-sharing. Some cribs can also be transformed into an oversized travel cot. Others have additional features such as tilting, rocking, or converting into a larger baby cot.
The SnuzPod 4 is a consistently well-loved crib, and it's not just about its sleek and modern Scandi design. The crib comes with six height settings as well as a useful shelf for storage. It's also a bit heavier and bulkier than some of our more travel-friendly cribs and comes in an attractive bag that keeps it clean and dust-free when it's stored.
It's simple to put together with clear instructions and helpful tools to guide you. It's also easy to clean, with an easy-to-clean mattress cover and breathable fabrics. It has a few more extras than some of the other cribs we've used with, like an anti-reflux incline, a rocking function, and a storage pocket.
Jasmin says that this crib is great because it is "easy to reach the baby in the middle the night for fuss free feeding and is larger than the majority of Moses Baskets, so it will last for a longer time before my son grows out". She also loves the ease of clean and feels solid and well-made. It's also designed to fit on a divan, making it an ideal choice for those with limited space. It also comes with a handy bag to take on your travels. A perfect all-rounder.
