Avoid Making This Fatal Mistake You're Using Your Large Bedside Cot
Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots, also known as bassinets and co-sleepers, are designed to let parents sleep close to their babies at night without the risk of SIDS. However, they are only suitable for use up to 6 months when your baby will need to move into a cot, or a moses basket.

Mehack, a MFM home tester, was awed by the feature that this model comes with an integrated bassinet that can be used throughout the house. It also comes with the ability to rock manually. It was easy to assemble, and it came with a travel bag.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However cots are generally used for children up to the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots - big and standard, which can be converted into a toddler bed or cot. Selecting the larger of the two is a good choice when you want your child to sleep in it until they reach at least three years old.

Jasmine, a MFM mother who tested the product at home, liked that it was slightly larger than the typical Moses' basket but still not too big for the room of her baby. It's easy to get her baby into and out of the cot for nighttime feeding or soothing and that the quality is excellent in comparison to other cots she's seen that are flimsy.

Another home-based tester, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi is a versatile product It's a bassinet that lifts off that you can move around the home, and it's a blast too. It also has an option to tilt the reflux upwards and a machine-washable breathable liner. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. The Lora is a perfect fit for a South African cot mattress unlike some international or European brands. This means that you don't have to purchase a brand new mattress when your baby grows. However, Going Listed here does require an exclusive bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the perfect mattress for your cot here.

Height

When selecting a cot for the bed choose one that can be elevated to a level that is comfortable for you to feed your baby. It should also be able to be lower to a level that is not in the way so you can lift up your baby towards you to feed them at night or to soothe him. This is particularly useful when you are recovering from a C section. The Next2me Cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to a maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch can be adjusted to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is the height you would like to set for the cot's base to be. While some mums find it easier to get their babies out of traditional Moses baskets at the lowest height, others prefer an elevated base to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a well-liked option and one of our mum testers stating that it comes with a simple collapsible part that you can push down with the click of one button.

Keep in mind that a bassinet/bedside sleeping device should only be used until your baby is able to hold their head up without assistance, usually at approximately 6 months. This is due to the danger of inhaling suffocation. You should also be aware that when your child is old enough to be able to convert a bassinet/bedside sleeping system into a cot you must take the sides off once they are ready to do so. This will prevent them from climbing out or falling out of bed.

Design

There are many styles of cribs for bedside use, ranging from basic to lavish. Some of the more expensive options come with features like an inbuilt light or a center of calm that plays music and sounds and comes with two levels that help to soothe your baby back to sleep, or a swivelling footrest that makes it easier for you to reach your child to feed them. There are also models which can be made into a cot bed or toddler bed (or both) which is ideal when your child is ready to move to a larger bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air for instance was awarded Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It features a swivelling bottom that allows you to pick up your baby and transfer them to the other side of the crib without getting out of bed. This is ideal for new mums who are recovering from Caesarean or need to stay in the bed for extended periods of time. MFM mum home tester Jasmine was awed by this feature, saying that it was easy to use and made reaching her baby much easier - especially after her c-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib. It is machine washable and comes with a interior, reflux incline, and a rocking feature. It's a bit larger than other cribs for bed we've looked at, but it folds flat into its bag for travel, so it's relatively compact when not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester Also, she appreciated the bedside crib's function. She claimed that it was designed for both parents and children. It has a great design that is incredibly maneuverable and is super-sturdy. She said that the bassinet's swivelling base was a great idea because it let you move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to make access easier for moms who are recovering from C-sections.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main safety characteristic is that it can be easily moved up or down so that parents can reach their baby to feed or comfort him or their nappy. This is why it's perfect for mothers who are still be recovering from a C-section. Look for a design that allows you to lower one side with the push of a button so you can easily lift your baby without needing to get out of bed. This is especially important as your baby grows older and more mobile. You should also avoid adding anything to the crib that could increase the risk of suffocation or injury, such as pillows and duvets. These can cause babies to overheat.

The CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) Fabric-side enclosed openings (11 incidents) as well as consumer misassembly, or missing parts (6 incidents) and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC examined the possibility of adding additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example, these products would have to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. However best bedside cot for newborn determined that these requirements are not efficient or feasible to reduce the number of incidents where infants were entrapped between a bedside sleeper and an adult bed.

Many of the reported incidents in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers that can be converted to other types of use, such as bassinets and play yards. Several commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multiuse bedside sleepers to enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets through the use of an attachment that is removable and can be connected permanently or disconnected when the product is not being used as an actual bassinet.

The CPSC is considering these and other comments received in response to its NPR regarding bedside sleepers. The Commission will consider these comments when deciding on the final rule which is expected to be published in November 2021.
