ADHD Treatments For Adults


Adults can benefit from many of the same treatments as children. These treatments include medicine and counseling (psychotherapy) and life skills training. They could also include some combination of these treatments.

Stimulant Medications

These drugs work by increasing the brain chemicals that control attention and self regulation. These include the chemical methylphenidate (marketed as Ritalin, Concerta) and stimulants in the amphetamine class, such as lisdexamphetamine (marketed as Adderall, Vyvanse).

Stimulant Medicines

Stimulants speed up the body and can cause increased mental alertness and physical activity. These include legal substances like caffeine (added to coffee and tea) and nicotine, and prescription medicines used to treat attention deficit disorder (ADD) as well as narcolepsy and hyperactivity. In large doses, stimulants may create over-stimulation, which can cause anxiety, heart palpitations, high blood pressure as well as paranoia and aggression. For some long-term, use of stimulants can damage the functioning of the brain's dopamine system, which can reduce pleasure feelings. However, they don't carry the same danger of having side effects as stimulants, and could be a better option for those who are unable to tolerate them or are worried about addiction.
