Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots, also referred as bassinets or co-sleepers are designed to allow parents to rest close to their infants at night, without the risk of SIDS. However they are only suggested for use until 6 months when your baby will need to move into a cot, or a moses basket.
bedside co sleeper loved that this model comes with a bassinet that can be lifted off to use around the house and the ability to rock manually. It was simple to put together and came with its own travel bag.
Size
Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. Cots can also be converted into toddler beds. However they are typically intended for children who are the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots - big and standard, which can be transformed into a toddler bed or cot. If you'd like your child (or children) to be able to sleep in the larger cot, it's an excellent idea to pick the larger size.
Jasmine, an MFM mother who tested the product at home, liked the fact that it was a little bigger than a Moses basket, but not too large for the room of her baby. It's easy to carry her child into and out of the cot for nighttime feeding or soothing, and that the quality is excellent in comparison to other cots she's encountered that feel cheap and flimsy.
Another home-based test subject, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi is a versatile product - it's a lift-off bassinet that can be moved around the home, and it's rocking too. It also comes with a reflux incline and a machine washable breathable liner. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the Best Cot Crib, Crib, or Moses Basket. In contrast to International or European cot brands, the Lora can fit South African cot mattresses so you don't need to purchase a new mattress as your baby grows. However, it will require a special bespoke bedding set (60x120cm). Here is the ideal mattress for your cot.
Height
When choosing a bedside cot, look for one that can be raised up to a level that is comfortable for you when feeding babies. It must also be lowered to a level that is not in the way so you can lift up your baby towards you to feed them at night or comfort him. This feature is especially useful if you are recovering from a C Section. For example the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to the height of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm, and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.
Another thing to think about is the height you would like to set for the base of your cot to be. While some mothers find it easier to lift their babies out of the standard Moses baskets when they are at the lowest level, some mothers prefer a higher base to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a well-liked option, with one of our mum testers stating that it comes with a simple collapsible side that is easy to push down with the click of the button.
Keep in mind that a bassinet or bedside sleeping device should only be used when your baby is able to hold his head up without assistance, which is usually about 6 months old. This is because of the danger of suffocation. It's also important to know that if you select a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can be converted into a cot and vice versa, you must begin removing the sides once your child is ready for this to ensure they don't climb out or fall out of the bed.
Design
There are many different styles of cribs for bedside use, ranging from simple to luxurious. The more expensive options could include features such as a built-in nightlight, a soothing centre that plays music and sounds and has two levels of vibrations to help soothe your baby back to sleep, or the swivelling base which allows you to reach your baby for feedings. Some models can be transformed into an infant bed or cot bed (or both) when your child is ready for their own bed.
For instance the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Crib, Best Cot or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that lets you take your baby and move them from one side of the crib to the other without having to get up. This is perfect for new mothers recovering from Caesarean sections or those who have to stay in bed for prolonged periods of time. Jasmine is an MFM mother who tested the product at home, stated that it was simple to use and made it easier for her to reach her baby, especially after having a c-section.
Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards as the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It is machine washable and comes with a liner, reflux incline, and a rocking feature. It's bigger than other cribs we tested, but it folds into its travel bag, making it compact when not in use.
MFM mom home tester Leya also liked the functionality of this crib for bed, describing how it was designed with babies and parents in mind. It is easy to move and super-sturdy. The swivelling base of the bassinet is amazing because it lets you move the bassinet from side to side and one of its sides can be let down to make access easier especially for mothers who are recovering from their c-sections,' she said.
bedside co sleeper of a bedside cot is that it is able to be adjusted or moved to allow parents to reach their child when they need to feed them, soothe them or change their nappy. This makes it perfect for new mothers recovering from the C-section. Look for a design that allows you to lower one side at the press of a button, so you can easily lift your baby up without having to get out of the bed. This is crucial, particularly when your baby grows and becomes more mobile. Avoid adding anything that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation, like duvets and pillows that can cause your baby to overheat.
The NPR of the CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product issues like gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11 incidents) and consumer misassembly or missing components (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of adding additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance the products would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. However, the CPSC found that these requirements would not be efficient or feasible to reduce the number of incidents in which infants were trapped between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed.
Many of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that could be converted into other types of use, such as bassinets and play yards. Many commenters suggested that CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multi-use bedside beds to enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirements for bassinets by using a removable attachment that can be permanently connected or disconnected when the item is not being used as a bassinet.
The CPSC is currently examining these and other comments that were received in response to its NPR on bedside sleepers. The Commission will be examining these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be released in November of 2021.
