What is a bedside crib?
A bedside crib, also known as a bassinet, or co-sleeper is a baby cot that is attached to an adult bed. This allows your baby to sleep next to you in a safe environment. It's a method of co-sleeping in a safe manner that does not increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) like bedsharing, and can help you bond with your new arrival.
The cots usually have a side that can be lowered, so you can easily reach your infant throughout the night for feeding and comforting. This is especially useful for mums recovering from a c-section. Many of them are foldable or portable making them suitable for travel and as a temporary solution for newborns that aren't yet ready to move to a larger crib.
Find a crib that has a mattress that is breathable, as well as an appropriate cover to shield your baby from staining. You'll also want to pick up some baby-safe add-ons such as a blanket, a teether and cuddly toy.
If you are looking for a longer-term solution, some cribs come with conversion kits that let you transform them into a toddler bed or cot when the time is appropriate. This will extend their life and make the transition easier. Some come with a removable section at the top that can be turned into a bassinet. Some can be used in conjunction with a standard adult bed or a high-rise model. This is an excellent choice for families that plan to frequently travel or switch between bedrooms at night. Consider the size of your bedroom to ensure that you fit comfortably in the crib. Many cribs come with an riser that can be used to create an inclined position for infants who suffer from reflux.
The Joie Roomie Glide
Famous for their high-end baby products English brand Joie has stepped into the world of bedside cribs with the Roomie Glide. This crib was designed to enable parents to bond and sleep side-by-side with their babies, without sharing the same bed. It's loaded with features that help make bonding between parent and baby safe, simple, and fun.
One of the most important features is a smooth, rocking motion that can be activated with the push of an button. This gentle rhythm will help to soothe your baby without disrupting their normal sleep patterns. This is great for toddlers and older babies who are struggling to settle. It can help with digestive issues like colic and reflux.
The crib can be locked into its place after the rocking has been completed to stop it from moving and can be secured to the side of your bed with a strap and clip attachment. This makes the crib very solid and secure which allows you to rest peacefully, without having to worry that your child will slide off into the middle. The rounded cocoon shape has softly padded sides and two mesh windows on both sides to allow for plenty of airflow while keeping your baby secure.
The mattress is soft and firm. It also comes with a washable cover. The crib is easy to set up and disassemble thanks to the lightweight aluminum frame that makes it very mobile. The four wheels that lock are covered with rubber to ensure that the crib won't leave marks on your floor and are easy to move around. It is easy to clean using fabric wipes and is easy to put in a bag for travel, making it ideal for long-term stays away from home.
The TuttiBambini CoZee air
This model is made to be a safe baby-sitter from birth until 6 months. It comes with bars with rocking to make it easy to move and castors. Its deluxe airflow mattress offers a comfortable sleep surface while the ventilation panels keep your baby cool. There are also 6 different height settings as well as an incline option that could aid in reducing reflux and congestion.
The Tutti Bambini COZee air crib comes with a removable fabric and wipe-clean lining. This makes it much easier to clean than some bedside cribs which can create messy to clean. Additionally, it comes with a top bar that can be easily adjusted to feed at night without having to search for zips in the dark.
Anna discovered that the CoZee was a safe and comfortable sleeping space for her infant. She was delighted that it didn't sway like some other models, which meant it didn't wake her up at night when she was trying to comfort her baby during feeds. She also appreciated that the sides of the chair was lowered so she didn't have to reach over her partner in order to lift the child out to feed her at night.
The CoZee comes in oak or charcoal and is a chic option for any bedroom. It's more stylish than the other cribs we've tested and are typically utilitarian. It's also light at 11kg, and comes with a carrying case that allows you to take it with you on vacation or even when you move house. The only extras you have to purchase are a waterproof cover and a co-sleeping safety strap. The instructions and images are simple to follow when you first open the box.
The Maxi-Cosi lora
The Iora is an infant bassinet designed to help parents feel more connected to their baby while they sleep. It can be adjusted upwards and downwards and moved to three different slide positions, to fit beside the parent's bed or in the corner, so that the baby is always at hand. The mesh siding allows air to circulate through, allowing you to see your baby easily. And you can stow additional pajamas and other items in the large storage basket under.
The Iora is a smaller bedside crib that can fold flat. It also comes with a travel case so it can be carried anywhere. Our mom testers were able to move it from room to room and believed that it was a good size for a bedside cot, and not too big or small. They also loved the large storage basket, that is ideal for storing nappies or other bedding items.
This is a great option for parents who wish to sleep in a co-sleeping bed, but don't wish to share their bed. Or if one of the parents has mobility issues such as arthritis or back pain. Our mom testers love the convenience of being able to access their baby in the Iora, and that it has an optional reflux incline to aid in reducing gas.
Our moms are thrilled that the mattress adheres to NICE guidelines. These include placing the baby in the Moses basket or crib on its own without blankets, toys or pillows. The mattress is also sturdy and comfortable for the baby, and sheets are easily available. It's not as light as some of the cribs that are smaller on our list, so if you prefer something lighter and easier for you to move, choose another option.
