Buying a Bedside Crib For Travel
The size of this crib is ideal for moms. It's bigger than a Moses Basket but smaller than the Cot Bed. It folds down to a third of its original size, and can fit into a handy travel bag, making it ideal for travel.
It is important to remember that the crib should only be used for sleeping. Toys, pillows and blankets are an entrapment risk.
Safety
When you are looking for a travel crib it is important to make sure that the manufacturer is compliant with all safety standards. The best place to start is the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website, which will let you know whether or not a specific crib is being recalled. Pick a mattress that's suitable for the crib of your child so that it doesn't slide through the gaps or pose the risk of suffocation.
When you are choosing the right bassinet or crib choose one that conforms to the latest safety standards that were revised in 2022. It is also recommended to avoid older cribs, modified cribs or drop side cribs that are used for travel as they aren't tested and could pose a risk to your baby's safety.
A travel crib must be strong and well-constructed. Examine for loose, missing or broken screws, as well as other hardware. If you are using a playard, it must have mesh windows and secure walls to allow air flow. The crib's slats must not be more than 2 3/8 inches apart to avoid the baby's head and legs from getting trapped. Do not put any toys, blankets or toys in the crib. These objects can choke or drown your baby. They should be removed when they are able to stand up on their own, or before the age of 5 months.
Make sure you check frequently for broken or loose screws and other hardware. This is especially important when traveling with a child. Take all plastic out of the crib too.
If you're using a portable crib, make sure it's not close to a window. A window could be an injury from falling and your baby may be injured in the event that they crash into it. Even if your child is old enough to roll over, it's best to keep their sleeping area away from windows. If your baby starts to roll over in bed it's a good idea awake them to prevent injury.
Portability
If you're planning a trip on holiday, have family staying with you, or want a safe crib for sleepovers with your friends, a portable crib (or playard or playard, as they're sometimes called) is a great choice. These portable cribs are simple to build and compact when closed, and come with a comfortable padded mattress that can support newborns up to 15kg.
MFM home testers appreciate the BabyBjorn travel crib because it's easy to fold and to store. Its easy drop down panels that can be operated by one hand are also easy for parents with a bleary eye. It's not our tiniest pack-and-play play, but at 15 pounds, it's an adequate weight. It also has regular handles instead of a backpack-style strap that some people prefer.
Another option that is worth considering is the Joie Kubbie Sleep, which combines a bedside crib and bassinet in one compact unit that's perfect for both holidays and overnight visits to friends and family. It's not the least expensive one, but it does come with a wealth of dancing and all-singing features such as a storage basket as well as calming colour-changing lights for the night, lullabies and white noise to help your baby sleep and its bassinet sits up higher than most to make it easier to use during the early days when mom is still recovering.
It's also easy to keep clean with wipeable and machine-washable fabrics. It's also, despite its size and weight (it's on the bulkier side when opened), it's relatively lightweight at less than 12kg. It can easily fit into a compact, practical travel bag that comes with it perfect for trips away from home. It has six different height settings as well as an adjustable tummy tilt for reflux or colic babies. It's able to fit any size bed. It's also very easy to install, with our MFM tester having it ready in just 10 minutes. It'll require a separate mattress.
Feeding
If you're traveling for pleasure or business, it's important to ensure your baby is comfortable and safe when traveling. While some families may be tempted to use a bassinet or a crib that they have however, it's recommended to purchase one specifically made for travel. These are smaller, with mesh sides that allow parents to check on their babies without disturbing them. They are light enough to allow for easy transportation between locations. bedside crib and travel cot meet all safety standards of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and have not been recalled.
If you have to use a crib that is placed at your bedside it is recommended that your child be positioned on their backs and the mattress be free of blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals. Sharing the bed with parents isn't advisable for any baby, regardless of age, and this kind of sleeping together is associated with an increased risk of SIDS. If you have to occasionally co-sleep ensure that your baby is sleeping and that you and your partner are dressed and awake.
There are many kinds of cribs for babies and infants.
Some are shaped as a mini-crib or Moses basket, while others have sides which can be placed on parent's beds. This allows for middle-of-the-night access to the baby for feeding and comforting while avoiding the risks of true co-sleeping which the AAP cautions against due dangers of suffocation. The Arm's Reach Clear-Vue Bassinet is a bedside sleeper that is attached to the mattress of a parent. This is a good option for older children since the sides can be raised to allow you to reach the infant without lifting them from the bed. The travel cot that has built-in cribs that can be removed enables you to easily lift a sleeping baby up for feeding or care.
Sleeping
Bedside cribs let you sleep with your baby in a safe and secure way. They are placed next to your bed at night so that you can reach over easily for feedings at night and monitor them without disrupting their sleep. Some cribs have a drop side that you can lower to make this easier, and others come with an adjustable height adjustment so that they will fit your bed at home or away.
It was previously recommended that infants have their own bedrooms. However parents are increasingly choosing to sleep in a co-sleep. Also known as rooming-in this arrangement lets babies be close to their parents, but remain safely separated on their own crib or bassinet. There are a variety of co-sleepers, such as the iCrib, an iCrib-style portable crib that can fit on the top of a bed, or a crib. It comes with a lightweight frame, a removable mattress, and can be folded up for easy storage. bedside sleeper cot is another alternative. It is attached to the bed edge and features 7 height positions, and a tummy-tilt to ease colic and reflux. Our MFM home testers highly praised this crib for its compact folding and ease of use. It's also available in a variety of colors.
There are also freestanding bedside cribs, like our Lilly and Alain, that can be put on top of an existing bed frame. They come with a moveable side barrier that can slide down to allow you pick your baby up for dinner at night, but the crib is completely self-contained and your baby will be sleeping comfortably throughout this period. These models also meet the latest BS EN 1130:2019 safety requirements which stipulate that the 120mm high barrier should be installed between your mattress and the cot of your child.
Travel cribs are also available. They are designed specifically for use on the road. They are usually smaller and lighter than a standard crib and are therefore easy to transport into and out of cars and hotels. The Munchkin Brica travel crib, for example can be set up and packed down in under a minute and it weighs only three pounds, making it easy to move and carry.
