Myocardial infarctions and heart failure are the cause of more than 17 million deaths annually worldwide. ST-segment elevation myocardial infarctions (STEMI) require timely treatment, because delays of minutes have serious clinical impacts. Machine learning can provide alternative ways to predict heart failure and identify genes invovled in heart failure. For these scopes, we applied a Random Forests classifier enhanced with feature elimination to microarray gene expression of 111 patients diagnosed with STEMI, and measured the classification performance through standard metrics such as the Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC AUC) Afterwards, we used the same approach to rank all genes by importance, and to detect the genes more strongly associated with heart failure. We validated this ranking by literature review and gene set enrichment analysis. Our classifier achieved MCC = +0.87 and ROC AUC = 0.918, and our analysis identified KLHL22, WDR11, OR4Q3, GPATCH3, and FAH as top five protein-coding genes related to heart failure. Our results confirm the effectiveness of machine learning feature elimination in predicting heart failure from gene expression, and the top genes found by our approach will be able to help biologists and cardiologists further our understanding of heart failure.Molecular communication (MC) is a promising paradigm, which conveys messages at the nano- or micro- scale for information exchange by using molecules or particles as signal carriers. Clock synchronization between transmitters and receivers in MC systems plays an important role in information exchange and nanodevices' collaboration. The current research about the synchronization mainly focuses on fixed MC systems. However, the movements of transmitters and receivers commonly exist in MC systems. In this paper, two clock synchronization schemes, the least square method and the peak time method, are proposed to estimate the clock offset between a mobile transmitter and a mobile receiver in mobile MC systems. selleck inhibitor The synthesis time of information molecules is also taken into consideration in the proposed schemes, and by using different types of molecules, the influence of the synthesis time of molecules can be solved. The effects of the movement of receiver on the received signal are discussed. The performance of the proposed schemes is evaluated by simulations and discussed.Cartograms are map-based data visualizations in which the area of each map region is proportional to an associated numeric data value (e.g., population or gross domestic product). A cartogram is called contiguous if it conforms to this area principle while also keeping neighboring regions connected. Because of their distorted appearance, contiguous cartograms have been criticized as difficult to read. Some authors have suggested that cartograms may be more legible if they are accompanied by interactive features (e.g., animations, linked brushing, or infotips). We conducted an experiment to evaluate this claim. Participants had to perform visual analysis tasks with interactive and noninteractive contiguous cartograms. The task types covered various aspects of cartogram readability, ranging from elementary lookup tasks to synoptic tasks (i.e., tasks in which participants had to summarize high-level differences between two cartograms). Elementary tasks were carried out equally well with and without interactivity. Synoptic tasks, by contrast, were more difficult without interactive features. With access to interactivity, however, most participants answered even synoptic questions correctly. In a subsequent survey, participants rated the interactive features as "easy to use" and "helpful." Our study suggests that interactivity has the potential to make contiguous cartograms accessible even for those readers who are unfamiliar with interactive computer graphics or do not have a prior affinity to working with maps. Among the interactive features, animations had the strongest positive effect, so we recommend them as a minimum of interactivity when contiguous cartograms are displayed on a computer screen.Color design for 3D indoor scenes is a challenging problem due to many factors that need to be balanced. Although learning from images is a commonly adopted strategy, this strategy may be more suitable for natural scenes in which objects tend to have relatively fixed colors. For interior scenes consisting mostly of man-made objects, creative yet reasonable color assignments are expected. We propose C3 Assignment, a system providing diverse suggestions for interior color design while satisfying general global and local rules including color compatibility, color mood, contrast, and user preference. We extend these constraints from the image domain to [Formula see text], and formulate 3D interior color design as an optimization problem. The design is accomplished in an omnidirectional manner to ensure a comfortable experience when the inhabitant observes the interior scene from possible positions and directions. We design a surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithm to efficiently solve the highly nonlinear optimization problem for interactive applications, and investigate the system performance concerning problem complexity, solver convergence, and suggestion diversity. Preliminary user studies have been conducted to validate the rule extension from 2D to 3D and to verify system usability.Recoloring 3D models is a challenging task that often requires professional knowledge and tedious manual efforts. In this paper, we present the first deep-learning framework for exemplar-based 3D model recolor, which can automatically transfer the colors from a reference image to the 3D model texture. Our framework consists of two modules to solve two major challenges in the 3D color transfer. First, we propose a new feed-forward Color Transfer Network to achieve high-quality semantic-level color transfer by finding dense semantic correspondences between images. Second, considering 3D model constraints such as UV mapping, we design a novel 3D Texture Optimization Module which can generate a seamless and coherent texture by combining color transferred results rendered in multiple views. Experiments show that our method performs robustly and generalizes well to various kinds of models.
