Bedside Sleeper Cot
A bedside sleeper cot (also called a bassinet) can be attached to the bed's side so baby can be close enough for nighttime feeding, but in their own sleeping area. Our mothers love that they are easy to reach and can also pivot or lower the sides to be closer.
Safety
A bedside sleeper cot lets babies to be within reach of parents in their beds for feeding at night, as well as monitoring and comfort, without increasing the risks associated with sharing beds (which could result in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The cots are designed to adhere to NHS guidelines on co-sleeping and are endorsed by childcare experts like director of the Mother-Baby Behavioural Sleep Laboratory Dr McKenna.
They also foster healthy attachment and breastfeeding by keeping babies close. This helps them to reach developmental milestones. It is essential that parents search for bassinets that are easy to clean and safe to use and make sure they've been tested and approved by a reliable agency such as JPMA.
In 2023, ASTM updated its version of the bedside sleeper's voluntary standard F2906 to respond to newer models that convert the bassinet into a bedside sleeper by dropping one side rail next to an adult bed, and allowing some areas of the lower side to be at an elevated level above the mattress, which presents an increased risk for the entrapment of. CPSC's direct final rule incorporates in its reference this 2023 revision to the existing mandatory standard set under section 104 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) for durable infant or toddler products that have been in use for more than 180 days and is expected to decrease the risk of injury.
Remember that a bassinet, or bedside sleeper, should never be used in conjunction with pillows or blankets. This can be an entrapment risk since babies are unable to lift their heads high enough to free them from soft objects. A reclining position can result in the head tipping to move forward, thereby blocking their airway. Always place your child on their back when using a crib, bassinet or play yard. Use a fitted sheet that meets the federal requirements.
Convenience
Being close to your baby you at night can help build a bond between newborns and parents. Bedside sleeper bassinets attach securely to the sides of your bed and let you easily reach your child to change diapers feedings, as well as comforting. We looked for models that had mesh sides that were translucent and visible through to allow you to keep an eye on your child without stepping up from bed.
It is important to ensure that the bassinet meets the American Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) requirements and is certified safe for infants. Look for a wide base, a sturdy attachment mechanism and sturdy construction that prevents the bassinet from tipping over. A mattress that is breathable is important also.
Choose a model with a manual rocking function that's gentle on your baby and will help them sleep. Some models also come with tilting options, which can be helpful for newborns with colic or reflux, but should only be used with the guidance of your doctor or health visitor.
Some bassinets come with a mattress while others require you to purchase a mattress separately. Buy a mattress designed to be suitable for the sleeper that is placed on the bedside. Second-hand mattresses can be too soft, and may cause SIDS. You will also need to buy a breathable fitted bed sheet and muslin baby blanket. Check the fabric lining and foam mattress are machine washable to make it easier to clean. A basket or shelf for storage is a great option to store essentials such as nappies, clothes and muslins. There are many models that have wheels to make it easier to move around the home.
Breastfeeding Support
If you decide to breastfeed the baby, a cot with a bedside position will help you make the most of your feedings at night. Attached to your bed you can reach across to feed your baby once he wakes up. The cot's side can then drop down to create a bassinet that is shallow for safe side-by-side sleeping. Some models also tilt to accommodate reflux.
The curving sides allow you to see and raise your baby up for a feeding. They won't roll off the side. Some bedside sleeper cots also include an automatic rocking function that can help calm your baby and encourage them to fall asleep quicker after feeding.
If you want to keep your baby clean, a soft fabric and removable bedding that can be washed in the machine are a great option. Some models have gentle rocking or vibration functions which can soothe your baby to sleep. Breastfeeding mothers will also appreciate having plenty of storage.
Bed-sharing is a popular choice for breastfeeding mothers as it is easy and allows them to have an intimate bond with their baby while they sleep. Research has proven that babies who are breastfed who share a sleeping space with their mothers have better outcomes than those who are bottle-fed. It is crucial to be aware of the risks and practices associated with sharing an infant's bed and to choose a mattress that is safe for your baby.
Some in-bed sleeping bags have soft edges that could keep your baby in the bag. Be sure to not let the bedside sleeping device slide backwards. This could cause a gap into which your baby can crawl or roll.
If bedside cot sale worried about the safety of a baby or mother sleeping close to you, go to an LLL meeting. Or talk with a Sleep Leader about the sleeping habits of your child. They can help you create an environment that is safe for your baby and also explain the dangers of SIDS. They can also show you how to get the "sweet sleep' that nursing mothers enjoy, which includes many protective factors similar to breastfeeding.
