Newborn Bedside Cot
A newborn bedside cot is a small sleeper that allows new babies to sleep in the same room as their parents, without the risks of true co-sleeping (which the AAP recommends against due to suffocation and SIDS). It helps you take care of your baby and nurse them during the night.
This mattress is a firm mattress that can support babies' backs and decrease the risk of SIDS. It can be swiveled over the bed of your adult to make it easier for you to carry your baby out for midnight cuddles or a sunrise kiss.
Budget
A bedside crib, also called a co-sleeper or bassinet is a bassinet-style baby cot that clips to your existing bed. This lets you easily and safely reach your newborn for middle-of-the-night feeding, comforting or cuddles. They are a great option for mothers or new parents recovering from a csection as they offer the baby with easy access and don't require you to get up.
There are a variety of designs available, ranging from basic ones with just a drop down side to more sophisticated models with various adjustment options, such as an incline or a height. The majority of them can be converted into an independent crib for daytime naps or when your baby is about months old and sleeps longer at night.
One of our favourites is the Maxi-Cosi Lora which was shortlisted for 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the categories of Best Cot Crib, Best Cot or Moses Basket. MFM home tester Emily expressed her delight at how stylish and contemporary the design is, while she appreciated the feature that you can use it as a regular bassinet or attach it onto your bed to sleep side-by-side in a safe and secure manner. She also appreciated the soft mattress, which passed our firmness test, and the fact that it has a manual rocking feature that can be set to a slight incline for those suffering from reflux.
However, she didn't like the fact that it had a non-mesh panel on the lower end, and thought it was a bit heavy to move from room to room often. She also found it to be a little heavy to carry up and down the stairs once folded into a travel bag.
Size
A bedside cot is essentially an upholstered bassinet that is fixed to your side of the bed. It allows you to easily reach your baby during the night for feeding nappies, comforting and feeding. It's also great for moms recovering from C-sections.
The NHS and Lullaby Trust advise that you place your baby in the same space as you, but keep them separate from you for the first six months, since this will help decrease the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). A bedside crib is a safe method to achieve this as it is low-sided and allows you to easily access your newborn throughout the night.
It's important that your newborn sleeps on a firm mattress since this is safer than a mattress that is soft. Newborns don't have the motor control to rotate and a mattress that is soft could increase the risk of suffocation. The breathable fabric and skin-friendly materials make this mattress comfortable for your baby but sufficiently firm to be safe for your baby.
Mum Jasmin was pleased that the crib didn't occupy too the entire space in her room and thought it was the ideal size for a newborn. She also said that the mattress was also good quality, unlike others that feel thin and thin. She also loves that it has a storage space underneath for clothes and blankets - something she says many other bassinets lack.
Mehack Mehack, an MFM mum who tested the product at home, is thrilled that you can take off the wall on the side to allow for easier access to your baby. She also appreciates that the legs can be put under the bed to make it appear less bulky and occupy less space on the floor. She is also impressed by how it was easy to move around the house when she needed to do feeds and check-ins during the night.
A winner of an Gold award in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards and the CoZee Air is a popular choice among parents. bedside crib with wheels is designed with four pulleys that are built-in to raise or lower the crib. It also comes with a large storage bin for toys, blankets and other essentials. It's also light and easy to put together, making it ideal to travel with your baby.
Safety
When choosing a baby's bedside cot, you must keep safety in mind. The Lullaby Trust, as well as the NHS, recommend that babies don't be placed in parents bed due to the risk of suffocation or sudden infant death syndrome. Bedside bassinets allow parents to keep their newborns close, which allows for nighttime feedings, comforting, and monitoring without having to get up.
This close proximity can also aid breastfeeding mothers since it lets them attend to the baby's needs while still sleeping. This can help to maintain the supply of milk and encourage breastfeeding. Some cots with a bedside are equipped with adjustable height features that can help both the mother and baby to get into the bassinet to feed or take care of other needs throughout the night.
Many bassinets come with a mattress that is designed to decrease the chance of suffocation and meets industry standards. This is crucial because a newborn's bones are brittle and not fully developed and must be supported to prevent damage. The mattress should be encased in a fitted cover to minimize the risk of suffocation due to dust mites or other allergens and kept hygienically clean and free of irritants.
Some cots with a bedside have the capability of being tilted, which can be beneficial for babies with reflux or digestive issues, but this should always be done with great caution and at a gentle angle. Avoid adding pillows, duvets, or padded crib bumpers in the bassinet. They could pose a risk of suffocation for your baby.
It is also recommended to consider a bassinet that has a secure attachment system. It can be connected to your existing bed easily without the need of tools. This can be especially helpful for parents who may struggle to lift their baby into and out of the cot, or who are worried about accidentally falling asleep. If your bassinet has a secure attachment, it is a good idea for you to regularly check it. Check to ensure there are no gaps and that the system is securely attached.
Comfort
If you are a soon-to-be parent, your baby's comfort is one of your main concerns. There's a great sleep solution that lets you keep your baby close throughout the night - without any of the dangers that come with bed-sharing. The crib for newborns is a bassinet style cot that can be attached to the side of the bed. It lets you safely carry your baby towards you for feedings and calming. bedside crib and cot is an excellent option for mothers recovering from a C section as it removes the need to get up or to bend over.
Modern bedside cots for babies should have a flat, firm mattress to encourage safe sleep practices and reduce the risk Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The bedding should be simple, with just a cot sheet and a blanket tightly tucked at the bottom. Avoid toys, bumpers and pillows since they can be thrown over your baby and cause danger of suffocation. If your baby is used to being swaddled for several weeks and you want to use an swaddle or baby sleep bag. But, it should be removed once they are strong enough to remove them.
Some bedside cribs have an open or removable side to make it easy for your newborn for middle-of-the-night feeds and comforting. This feature is ideal for parents who want to maintain a close relationship with their child, but still adhere to NHS sleep guidelines. If you're planning to sleep in the same bed with your baby, it's important to understand that this practice has been associated with an increased risk of SIDS particularly in the event that a parent falls on their infant during sleep.
A fabric that is breathable will keep your baby comfortable and cool throughout the night. This is particularly crucial if you intend to sleep with your newborn, as the risk of overheating increases during sleep. The SnuzPod4 comes with a unique breathable side panel that helps improve the flow of air, keeping your baby warm.
