A Small Bedside Cot That Attaches to Your Adult Bed
If you want to keep your baby as close as you can at night, but not have to leave bed, a bedside crib is the perfect solution. The fabric's breathable design means you can easily see baby and they're easy to lower for those bleary-eyed 3am feeds.
Some double as a moses's basket.
What is a bedside cot?
bedside cots for newborns (also known as a bassinet or co-sleeper) is a small baby cot that attaches to your adult bed, allowing your newborn to sleep comfortably next to you. This is a safe form of co-sleeping that does not increase the risk of SIDS, like bedsharing. It can also help you bond with your new baby.
They usually have a side that can be raised, so you can easily reach your newborn during the night for feeding and comforting. This is particularly helpful for mothers who are recovering from the c-section. Many of them are foldable or portable making them suitable for travel and as an interim solution for babies that aren't yet ready to be able to transition into a crib that is large enough.
Choose a crib that has an air-conditioned mattress, as well as a protective cover that will protect your baby from stains. You might also want to buy baby-safe accessories such as the blanket or teether.
If you are seeking a long-term solution, some cribs come with conversion kits that allow you to transform them into a toddler bed or cot when the time is right. This is great for extending their life and making the transition easier. Some models have a removable portion at the top that can be converted into the bassinet. Other models can be used with a standard adult bed or a high-rise bed. This is an excellent choice for families who plan to travel frequently or switch between bedrooms in the evening. Take into consideration the dimensions of your room to make sure you can fit comfortably in the crib. A lot of cribs have an adjustable riser that can be used to create an inclined position for babies who suffer from reflux.
The Joie Roomie Glide
They are known for their high-end baby products, English brand Joie has entered the world of cribs that are bedside with the Roomie Glide. The co-sleeper was created to enable parents to bond and sleep side by side with their babies, without sharing one bed. It is full of features that make bonding between parents and baby safe, easy and enjoyable.
A smooth rocking motion can be activated by pressing the button. It can help soothe baby to sleep by a gentle rhythm that doesn't disrupt their normal sleep pattern. This is ideal for older babies and toddlers who struggle to settle and can aid in digestive issues like colic and reflux.
The crib can be locked in it once the rocking is done to stop it moving. It can be secured to the bed's side by clips and straps. This makes the crib solid and secure and allows you to sleep soundly without worrying that your baby will roll off into the middle. The rounded shape of the cocoon is complemented by softly padded side panels and double mesh windows at both ends. This allows for airflow while keeping your baby safe.
The mattress included is comfortable and firm and comes with a removable cover. The aluminium frame is light and lightweight, making the crib very portable and easy to assemble. The four wheels that lock are rubber-covered to ensure that the crib doesn't leave marks on your floor and are easy to move around. The crib is easy to clean with the wipeable woven fabric and is easily put in a bag for overnight stays.
The TuttiBambini CoZee air
This premium model is designed to be a secure, next-to-me-crib from birth to 6 months. It comes with bars with rocking to allow for easy mobility, as well as castors. Its airflow mattress is luxurious and provides an ideal sleeping surface and ventilators ensure your baby is kept cool. There are also 6 different height settings, including an incline option to help with congestion and reflux.
In contrast to other cribs for bed which can be a challenge to clean due to their endless stream of dribble and snot The Tutti Bambini CoZeeAir comes with a wipe-clean liner and fabric that can be removed for machine-washing. Additionally, it comes with a top bar that is easily lowered for nighttime feeds without needing to fumble with zips in the dark.
Anna discovered the CoZee to be a safe, comfortable place to sleep for her baby. She was pleased that it didn't sway like some other models, which meant it wasn't waking her at night while she was trying to comfort her baby for feedings. She also liked the fact that the side could be lowered so she didn't need to reach out over her partner to pull the baby for night time feeds.
The CoZee is available in charcoal and oak and is a chic addition to the bedroom. It's more a designer piece than some of the other cribs we've tested, and can appear quite utilitarian. It's also relatively lightweight at just 11kg, and comes with a carry case so you can carry it with you on holiday or if moving home. The only things you'll need to buy are a fitted waterproof sheet and a co-sleeping safety strap. The instructions and illustrations are simple to follow when you first open the box.
The Maxi-Cosi lora
The Iora is a bassinet that can be placed at the bedside that helps parents feel connected to their infant while they sleep. It adjusts upwards and downwards and moves through three slide positions to fit next to the parent's bed, or in the corner of the room, so that the baby is always close to the parent's side. The mesh siding is breathable, allowing air to circulate through and gives you a quick glance at your child. You can also store any extra pajamas or items in the large storage basket beneath.
The Iora is a smaller bedside cot that folds flat. It also comes with a travel bag to allow it to be carried anywhere. It was easy to move from room to room and our mom testers thought it was the right size for a bedside crib. They also appreciated the large storage basket, perfect for storing nappies or bedding.
This is a great option for parents looking to co-sleep, but do not want to share their own beds or whose partner may be prone to mobility issues, such as back problems or arthritis. Our mom testers love the fact that they can easily access their child in the Iora, and it also has an optional reflux incline to aid in reducing gas.
Our mothers appreciate the fact that it complies with NICE guidelines that state to put the infant in a crib or Moses basket on its own (with no toys, blankets pillows, etc.). The mattress is also firm and comfortable for the baby, and sheets are easy to find. It's not as light as the other cribs that are smaller on our list, so if you prefer something lighter and easier to move, you can choose another option.
