Bedside Crib and Travel Cot
Bedside cribs look like the bassinet that is attached to the side of a bed. Some have a side that can be lowered for easy access, while others have an inclined design that is perfect for reflux babies.
MFM test subject Georgina found this crib very simple to assemble and the instructions were simple, resulting in a quick and easy build. It also folds down into a compact size and comes with a handy bag for transport.
Easy to assemble
They are compact and easy to set up, meaning they can be set near your bed. They are also lighter, which makes them more portable. Georgina one of our MFM home test participants, praised the Maxi-Cosi Lora crib for being "super easy to put together, with clear instructions and simple zips." This crib can also function as a travel cot, and comes with a convenient bag for when you're traveling. It features multiple mesh windows for breathability, and the adjustable height means it can fit on any mattress.
Some cribs for bedside use a side panel which can be lowered to allow you to easily reach your baby without having to get out of bed. This is a great choice for mothers who are breastfeeding, or those who want to be close to their baby throughout the night, but don't want to risk co-sleeping (which is linked with an increased risk of SIDS).
Many models come with built-in rocking functions. This can be very relaxing for your baby and can help them sleep. Some cribs feature a reclining position that can be helpful for children suffering from reflux or colic. This position is best used under supervision and you should consult an expert in health or a doctor prior to attempting it.
Many cribs for bed come with a canopy that protects your baby from sound or light. This can help to calm your baby down. Some cribs have a storage area underneath which is ideal for storing additional blankets, diapers, and clothing for your child.
Many cribs for bedside use can be converted into toddler beds or standalone cots. This is a major selling point for many families. MFM's 2021 Mother&Baby Awards winner the Joie Roomie Go is a prime example. It has removable side panels as well as conversion kits and a tummy tilt, making it a versatile travel bed. It has five height adjustments that can be matched to your bed. The MFM home testers loved it for being comfortable and easy to set up and compact. The Graco Play Yard (also called as the pack and play) is a different favorite, and was shortlisted in the 2022 Mother&Baby Awards.
Cosy and comfy
You can monitor your child from the comfort of your bed with a bedside crib. It's a great option for new mums recovering from a C section as you can easily carry your child towards you to feed them at night or change their nappies with no need to get out of bed. The most comfortable cribs have breathable mesh sides which you can see your baby through.
Some cribs let you lower the barrier completely. This allows you to co-sleep with no risk. (Make sure that the crib you choose meets the current safety requirements). Some allow you to keep the barrier lowered but then raise it after you've lifted baby off, which is better for parents who have fears of their baby falling off the side of their mattress.
The Luah was awarded the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket - is designed to clip onto bedsteads and divan beds, however it does require some longer straps than some other models (check the specifications to make sure that your bed will be able to fit). The spacious design comes with an opening side panel, a perforated bottom with a patented design that provides air cushioning to improve air flow. In addition, there's an integrated reflux setting and a 360 swivel so you can rotate the crib to fit the position of your baby.
If you're looking for something a smaller the Tutti Bambini CoZee is a stylish option with oak legs and clever fabrics to fit your decor. It is also very easy to put together. Georgina who took part in the MFM test was capable of putting it together quickly and without requiring any instructions. It's also a good travel cot, folding down flat and slipping into a bag for easy storage.
The Next2me Magic, shortlisted for Best Cot, Crib, or Moses Basket in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, has a larger capacity, but it is small and simple to attach to your bed. Georgina also found it easy to set up, though she felt the instructions could have been more clear about the zips.
Easy to clean
When you're looking at travel cots and bedside cribs, look for ones that have a mattress cover that is removable that is machine-washable. This will allow you to keep it clean from leaky nappies, sick babies and dribbles. You should also select one that is easily disassembled, allowing you to clean and sanitise all the nooks.
This is vital, as it's the best way to make sure that all germs and dirt have been eliminated. Also, you should ensure that the sides of your crib are securely connected, ensuring there aren't any gaps or spaces that your child could slip down or become trapped.
Apart from being easy to clean, you'll also want an infant crib that is comfortable for your child and is compatible with your own bed. This is particularly important in the case of a co-sleeping bedside crib. These cribs are designed to be tethered securely to the parent's side, giving parents to have easy access to their child at night to feed and soothe their baby while still ensuring the security that separate sleeping surfaces offer.
When selecting a crib for your bedroom, you should also consider whether it comes with extra features that might be useful to you. For instance, some cribs have the ability to rock (useful for babies who are fussy) or tilt, but be aware that you should only use this feature with care because it could be dangerous if your baby falls out.
You'll want to ensure that your crib or travel bed has a flat, firm mattress that fits comfortably into the frame. This will decrease the risk of SIDS because your baby's feet and head won't get caught in folds or gaps in the bedding.
It's a good idea purchase a new mattress for your crib or travel cot rather than using one that was handed down or bought second-hand. Used mattresses tend to lose their shape over time and increase the risk of SIDS. All new cribs must meet BS EN 1130:2019, the latest standard that imposes stricter requirements for secure and efficient sleep solutions.
Multi-faceted
A bedside crib (or co-sleeping crib, as they're often referred to) is attached to your bed in order for you to reach your baby easily at night without having to leave your sleeping space. They can also be used as standalone cribs during the daytime. The majority of cribs include a side panel that can be lowered, so you can see and touch your baby. Some cribs let you put the side panel down at night. This allows you to be close and comfortable with your baby, while minimising the risk of sharing the bed. Some cribs can be transformed into a travel cot. Others have additional features such as rocking, tilting, or even converting into an older baby cot.
The SnuzPod 4 is a consistently popular crib and it's not just about its sleek and modern Scandi design. bedside crib and cot comes with six height settings as well as an attractive shelf for storage. It's also a little heavier and bulkier than many of our more travel-friendly cribs however it comes with an attractive bag that keeps it free of dust and clean when stored.
The instructions are clear and there's a useful toolkit that can be used to help you. It's also simple to clean with an easy-to-clean mattress cover and the breathable fabric. It comes with a few additional features compared to other cribs, including an anti-reflux angle and a rocking feature and a storage compartment.
Jasmin says that this crib is wonderful because it is "easy to reach the baby in the middle the night for a peaceful feeding and is larger than the majority of Moses Baskets so it will last for a longer time before my son grows out". She also likes that it's easy to clean and feels durable and well-made. It can be set on a divan, making it a great choice for those with a little space. It also comes with an easy-to-carry bag that you can carry around when traveling. A perfect all-rounder.
