The aim of this study was to identify the current evidence regarding the risk of acquiring viral infections from gases or plumes during intra-abdominal surgery. Peritoneal fluids may contain cellular material and virus particles. Electrocautery smoke and plumes from energy devices may aerosolize harmful substances and viral particles. Insufflation and desufflation during laparoscopic surgery may also aerosolize and distribute biological material. A systematic scoping review was performed to assess the evidence and inform safe surgical practice.

A systematic search of the PubMed and Medline databases was undertaken until June 2020, observing Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses methodology, to identify articles associating viral infection of operating room staff from surgical gases and plumes. All evidence levels were included. The search strategy utilized the search terms 'surgery', 'laparoscopy', 'laparoscopic' 'virus', 'smoke', 'risk', 'infection'.

The literature search ierature to inform current practice. Further clinical research in this area is required.
A supravesical hernia (SH) is a rare abdominal wall hernia that is defined by the protrusion of abdominal viscera through the supravesical fossa. The objective of this study was to review current literature on SHs and elucidate their clinical manifestations and preferred therapeutic approach.

PubMed, Embase and Cochrane bibliographical databases were searched (last search 30 March 2020) for articles reporting on SHs.

Thirty-four studies met our inclusion criteria and involved collectively 38 patients (94.7% males) with an age of 59.57 ± 14.84 (mean ± standard deviation) years. Abdominal pain (81.6%) and nausea and vomit (71.1%) were the most frequently encountered symptoms. The majority of patients (78.1%) had signs of bowel obstruction. Twenty-nine patients (76.3%) suffered from an internal SH, while nine (23.7%) had an external one. An open hernia repair was conducted at 29 patients (76.3%), while eight (21.1%) had a laparoscopic approach and in one case (2.6%) the laparoscopic operation was converted to an open one. A mesh was applied at 14.3% of included cases. Eight patients (21.1%) underwent a bowel resection and hernia sac was resected at six (15.8%) cases. Four patients (11.8%) experienced postoperative complications and one patient (2.9%) died on first postoperative day.

SH is an extremely rare type of hernia occurring through the supravesical fossa between the remnants of urachus and foetal umbilical arteries. All clinicians should be aware of this entity and further studies are necessary in order to clarify their aetiology, true incidence and optimal therapeutic approach.

In this work, photo-triggered Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) polymerization are first investigated, employing copper(II) thioxanthone carboxylate (Cu(TX)2 ) as photoredox catalyst and sunlight as stimuli. Then, the novel MOPs using one photoredox catalyst, Cu(TX)2 to simultaneously mediate two different photopolymerizations, are successfully realized in one-pot, where photo-induced electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization and photo-activated CuAAC polymerization can effectively proceed in a one-pot and non-interfering fashion to afford predetermined copolymers with well-defined structure.
Pre-operative breast tumour radial dimensions often determine the choice between simple wide local excision (WLE) and oncoplastic breast surgery (OBS). We reviewed the three-dimensional interplay between tumour and surgical specimen dimensions in the two cohorts.

Demographic, tumour and treatment data were collected for all patients undergoing OBS by a single surgeon and compared with a randomly selected cohort of WLE patients treated. The relationship between tumour and specimen medio-lateral, supero-inferior and antero-posterior dimensions were explored in both groups. Subgroup analyses were performed in the OBS cohort (parenchymal displacement versus replacement).

We identified 60 OBS patients (63 breasts), comparing them with 60 WLE patients. Pre-operative tumour estimated size was significantly larger in the OBS cohort and concordant with macroscopic tumour radial dimensions and final microscopic tumour size. Surgical specimen weight was more than 3.5 times higher in the OBS group and its radial dit.Accessory ovary is a type of ovarian dysplasia, which is often defined as an ovarian tissue placed near and directly connected to the normal ovary or one of ovarian ligaments. It is often asymptomatic, mostly is found or diagnosed at laparotomy, laparoscopy or autopsy. Accessory ovary is often excised during surgery due to its potential malignant behavior. We report a case of endometriosis cyst occurred simultaneously in right side of orthotopic and accessory ovaries, together with torsion 180° of accessory ovarian cyst. Considering that the patient had not given birth and the large size of cysts, exploratory laparotomy was performed. During laparotomy, both site of ovarian cyst have been removed with orthotopic and accessory ovarian tissues preserved. After surgery, a large number of antral follicles were found both in right side of orthotopic and accessory ovaries by ultrasonography. Accessory ovary is considered to have physiological function, and can be preserved as a fertility protection measure for women who have fertility requirements. At present, the definition of ectopic ovary, accessory ovary and supernumerary ovary are very vague and rarely discussed separately. selleck chemicals So, we proposed a new way to clarify the concepts of ectopic ovary, accessory ovary and supernumerary ovary. Moreover, we advocated that they should be discussed separately in terms of definition and management measures.
