Step counts increased after surgery; however, piecewise models showed that patients with simple appendicitis had a more rapid increase (P<0.01) and reached a plateau (approximately 8000 steps/d) on postoperative day 9, whereas patients with complicated appendicitis did not reach a plateau and had lower step counts during the entire 21-postoperative day period (P<0.01).
Recovery in children after surgery can be characterized using wearables, which can also distinguish recovery trajectories based on disease severity. Establishing such "normative" recovery patterns may lead to earlier detection of complications.

Three hundred seventy eight 58-wk-old laying ducks were randomly divided into 3 treatments, each treatment consisted 6 replicates, with 12 individually caged laying ducks per replicate. Ducks fed a basal diet served as control, the other 2 groups of ducks were fed the same diet containing 150 mg/kg CAP but in the manner of feed restriction (pair-fed) or ad libitum fed. The experiment lasted for 8 wk. The results showed that the dietary supplementation with CAP under conditions of ad libitum feeding increased feed intake (P less then 0.001) and tended (P less then 0.1) to increase egg production and egg weight in laying ducks but had no effects on daily egg mass and feed conversion ratio. The relative weight of large yellow follicles from the 2 CAP-supplemented groups at 64 wk of age were significantly higher egg production performance probably by activating calcium signaling pathway and improving redox status. The cecal microbiota plays important roles in host food digestion and nutrient absorption, which may in part affect feed efficiency (FE). To investigate the composition and functional differences of cecal microbiota between high (n = 30) and low (n = 29) feed conversion ratio (FCR; metric for FE) groups, we performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing and predicted the metagenome function using Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved Species in yellow broilers. The results showed that the 2 groups had the same prominent microbes but with differing abundance. Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria were 3 prominent bacterial phyla in the cecal microbial community. Although there were no differences in microbial diversity, compositional differences related to FCR were found via linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size; the genus Bacteroides had a significantly higher abundance (LDA >2) in the high FE (HFE) group than in the low FE group. Furthermore, genus Bacteroides had a negative FCR-associated correlation (P less then 0.05). Oscillospira was positively correlated with Bacteroides in both groups, whereas Dorea was negatively correlated with Bacteroides in the HFE group. Predictive functional analysis revealed that metabolic pathways such as "starch and sucrose metabolism," "phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis," and "carbohydrate metabolism" were significantly enriched in the HFE group. The relatively subtle differences in FE-associated cecal microbiota composition suggest a possible link between cecal microbiota and FE. Moreover, Bacteroides may potentially be used as biomarkers for FE to improve growth performance in yellow broilers.Tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection remains one of the top ten causes of deaths worldwide. M. tuberculosis genome devoted 10% capacity for highly repeated PE/PPE genes family. To explore the role of PPE10 in host-pathogen interaction, PPE10 encoding gene Rv0442c was heterologously expressed in the nonpathogenic M. smegmatis strain. PPE10 altered the bacterial cell surface properties, colony morphology, and biofilm formation. Ms_PPE10 showed more resistance to stress conditions such as diamide, and low pH, as well as higher survival within the macrophage. Moreover, the host's cell apoptosis was regulated via decreased expression of caspases, IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-α through the Linear Ubiquitin Chain Assembly Complex (LUBAC) HOIP-NF-κB signaling axis. The study revealed novel insights into the mechanism of action of the PPE family.Etoposide (ETO) is a semi-synthetic derivative of podophyllotoxin with a definite antitumour effect, but its use is hampered by poor solubility and numerous side-effects. In this work, we developed a hyaluronic acid and ethylenediamine dual-modified albumin-polymer nanocomplex for tumour targeted delivery of ETO. learn more The ETO loaded dual-modified albumin-polymer nanocomplexes (E-HEAP NCs) was composed of a hyaluronic acid decorated cationic albumin shell and a stable poly (butyl cyanoacrylate) core. E-HEAP NCs exhibited a high encapsulation efficiency, great stability in vivo. Furthermore, blank HEAP NCs carrier showed excellent biocompatibility in vitro cell cytotoxicity assay. While, E-HEAP NCs represented superior inhibitory effect on HepG2 cells than free ETO. Additionally, E-HEAP NCs exhibited an excellent tumour-targeting effect, due to the enhanced targeting efficacy of hyaluronic acid and albumin-mediated transcytosis. Moreover, E-HEAP NCs displayed an enhanced antitumour effect and extended the survival period in tumour bearing mice. In summary, the developed novel protein-polymer nanocomplex can potentially serve as a drug delivery system for improved cancer therapy.Blood compatibility is an eternal topic of biomedical materials. The effect of heparin-mimicking polymers (HMPs) on blood compatibility has been well studied, especially the synergistic effect of sugar unit and sulfonate/sulfate unit. However, carboxylic groups also play an important role in HMPs. In this work, copolymers of sodium 4-vinyl-benzenesulfonate (SS) and 2-methacrylamido glucopyranose (MAG) (poly(SS-co-MAG)) and poly(acrylate acid) (PAA) were self-assembled on Au surfaces with different feed ratios. When self-assembly of poly(SS-co-MAG) alone, the optimized feed ratio of SS and MAG for vascular cell selectivity was 11 (PS1M1); at this ratio the Au-PS1M1 surface showed the highest human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) density and the lowest human umbilical vein smooth muscle cells (HUVSMCs) density. When self-assembly of PAA alone (surface designated as Au-PAA), the proliferation of both HUVECs and HUVSMCs was inhibited. Compared with either PS1M1 or PAA alone, the surfaces modified with both PAA and PS1M1 at the feed ratio of 11 (material designated as Au-PSM/PAA-2) showed enhanced promoting effect on HUVECs as well as enhanced inhibiting effect on HUVSMCs, indicating stronger vascular cell selectivity of carboxylic groups in the presence of sugar and sulfonate units.
