Evidence suggests that impairments in social cognition are associated with the occurrence of NES. Our aim was to investigate impairments in social cognition in the form of emotional and cognitive empathy in patients with NES compared to healthy controls.

For this purpose, we recruited 41 patients with video-EEG secured NES and compared them to 41 healthy controls matched by age, gender and educational level. Emotional and cognitive empathy were assessed using the Multifaceted Empathy Task (MET) and the Read the Mind in the Eye Test (RMET). Self-assessment questionnaires were used to record psychopathology in both groups.

Patients with NES showed no differences in cognitive empathy compared to the healthy controls. Additionall, they seem to have less emotional empathy specifically towards positive emotions, compared to healthy controls.

Our results are an indication of possible emotional empathy abnormalities in patients with NES. Those deviations, if replicated in large sample sizes, could implicate, that interventions for patients with NES should focus on improving empathy skills.

Cancer cachexia (CC) is a multifactorial syndrome that is associated with worse outcomes. Several criteria for its diagnosis have been suggested, but notable disparities exist. selleck chemical This study compared different diagnostic criteria for CC in patients with incurable cancer who are in palliative care.

A prospective cohort study was conducted at the National Cancer Institute in Brazil. Patients were classified by three CC diagnostic criteria, and comparisons between clinical, nutritional, and functional variables were verified according to the CC stage identified. Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox regression were used for the survival analysis. Concordance statistics were used to test the prognostic predictive accuracy of the criteria.

Primary trophoblast cells were isolated from first-trimester placenta and telomerase-induced immortalization was used to immortalize these cells. Subsets of cells were then evaluated by flow cytometry using CK7, HLA-G, CD45 and CD14, specific markers for trophoblast cells, extra-villous trophoblast, pan leucocyte and monocyte/macrophage, respectively. We were able to isolate primary trophoblast cells from several first-trimester placentas. One clone, AL07 trophoblast cells, isolated from a week 7 placenta, was morphologically stable and positiophoblast cell lines. We found that mutations of multiple histone H4 residues mostly or entirely embedded in the nucleosomal LRS (loss of ribosomal DNA-silencing) domain attenuate UV mutagenesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The attenuation is not caused by an alteration of ubiquitination or sumoylation of PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen), the modifications well-known to regulate TLS. Also, the attenuation is not caused by decreased chromatin accessibility, or by alterations of methylation of histone H3 K79, which is at the center of the LRS surface. The attenuation may result from compromised TLS by both DNA polymerases ζ and η, in which Rad6 and Rad5 are but Rad18 is not implicated.
